There are at least another (quite recent) which also uses red color to
mark the very important words. Actually, there are quite a lot of Japanese
books which use colors (mostly/only red). In the field of
Chinese-Japanese, I have several at home.

Using a little bit of color increases the readibility - but most of the
dictionaries which I know probably never asked themselves if they really
are suited for searching/scrolling/quick scanning/... - let's say, if they
couldn't be better with a better design.

We try to use the color concept on HanDeDict*. Search for 好 on http://chdw.de
* It is not yet the optimum but it is already much better than the
mono-colored version before.

We use blue for Hanzi and Pinyin; black for the German translations and
green for additional information (grammar etc). blue and black entries are
links.
