Comments: | The point is not that it's obscure; it's wrong. Given that it's so rarely used I think putting it as a headword, even with an "iK" tag is giving it too much credence. No 国語 has it searchable. I realise I may be just a minority of one in this, and if other editors agree with Johan, well let it happen. |

Comments: | Since meaning and reading are the same, it would be strange to split. Note that we have many other common entries with obscure headwords, for instance 添う(そう) and 仕舞う(しまう). In both the kanji form is used <0.1%. |

Comments: | I've sat on this too long. While I can understand the Japanese OK, I think it's useful for people looking for the appropriate Japanese for the equivalent phrase in English, or to check if they've constructed something that's actually used in Japanese (as this expression clearly is). To quote the GG5 usages: 俗に言う癒し系の音楽 music to relax to, as people call it 俗に言えば[いわゆる] to use a common 「word [phrase]; in everyday language; in the language of the street; as is said in common 「talk [speech, parlance>]; as is commonly said; as folks say; as the saying is 慣れると不思議さが減ると俗に言う. They say that familiarity takes the wonder out of things. Temp approval with extra glosses (which I'm sure can be improved._ |

Comments: | I've looked at this several times over the last week. I think: (a) making it into a "to ..." translation is not appropriate as, like the note says, it's prenominal and in the negative; (b) I'm not sure it's really a different sense from sense 4. The JEs (e.g. 中辞典 in 動かぬ証拠) are treating it as examples of the change/vary sense. I'll put it back the way it was, but we should probably consider dropping the sense and perhaps having an entry for 動かぬ. |

Comments: | I'm fine with [rK] in spite of the statistics - it is "correct" - but whatever you decide. Note: statistics for 極 and 谷 should probably not be directly compared, as they are not generally considered interchangeable in correct usage. (谷 = 窮 only, it seems). There are modern examples of 谷まる in yourei, it appears here and there online, but is indeed rare. If we [sK] 谷まる, I think all instances of 谷まる should be [sK] across all entries, including 進退極まる and 進退これ谷まる. If 谷 is removed from 進退これ谷まる, that entry should probably just be deleted. |

Refs: | The "wealthy socialite" gloss was added by Adam Rice, a respected JE translator, in 2007. He quoted a passage from the Wiki page (now removed): 現在、日本ではセレブと略され、金持ち、優雅、高級、などの意味合いで誤用されている。 and from the gogen-allguide.com entry: セレブの意味が曖昧なまま広まったため、単にお金持ちになることやブランド品を身につけることも「セレブになる」などと表現されるようになった。 He added: "On Japanese television, "セレブ" seems to be almost exclusively used in the sense of "Wealthy socialite" rather than the original English sense of the word. I have even seen the term used to refer to New York socialites (unfortunately I don't have a reference for that)." I think it can be covered by a simple addition to the new sense #2. |

Comments: | (a) I think Hendrik got the wrong reading of 表す when he put this and 使って表す in in 2010. (b) I think it's useful. GG5 has it as an example under the あらわす entry: "y を x を用いて表す give [express] y in terms of x." (c) as for "expession", I think it's in the class of 複合動詞 where the first verb part is in て form. We usually tag these as "exp", probably to distinguish them from the 思い出す variety. |

Comments: | This entry could have 良い added and "uk" added to the senses, which would bring it into line with the kokugos, GG5, etc. Alternatively a "also written 良い" note could be added. If we were to add 良い I'll have to reindex about 1500 sentences. I guess it's not been a problem, so maybe a note would do. |

Comments: | My apologies, thank you for the clarification from both of you. I was about to come back and say this was presumptuous of me, and that this is clearly an issue in jisho.org. jisho.org clearly usually handles this just fine(for short terms). And now I see, as you said, that it includes the readings after *all* of the links. I guess I never thought anything of it. It was just a coincidence that this broken link happened to have an explicit reading embedded in jmdict, and then I made a lot of assumptions. It looks like the length of this particular expression pushes it into some kind of tokenizer, after which the "reading" half is no longer identified as an element. But that's jisho's problem. Thanks again. |

Comments: | This is something being addressed in the "NG" version of the database, which is under development. If you set up an xref to just the entry alone ([see=2761770]) you get the reading in the XML edition, whether it's needed or not. |
