Comments: | Someone added "cold cereal" and "breakfast cereal" in 2007 along with this comment (but no references): "In popular usage, this words refers to any kind of breakfast cereal, and not just flake-shaped ones made of corn." I don't think this is true. It certainly isn't used for muesli/granola. The above link includes ココくんのチョコワ (which are like chocolate Cheerios) in a "top 5 cornflake cereals" list but I'm struggling to find other examples of コーンフレーク referring to non-flaked cereals. Comments: | I think the definition for this entry is a bit lacking - as shown in the first link above, that's an item description from a videogame made by a japanese developer, and judging by the usage of 練成 there I would assume the meaning is something on the lines of "a lump of metal refined from copper ore". In the second link about 錬金術 錬成 (the one using 錬 ) appears in this sentence: "金属に限らず様々な物質や人間の肉体や魂をも対象として、それらをより完全な存在に錬成する試みを指す。" and in this sentence as well I don't think the meanings of "training/drilling" would fit, so I would suggest the addition of something like "refining", maybe? |

Comments: | * Add idiomatic English translation (GG5, also used conventionally in English), which is even more poetic than the original Japanese, due to the crying as you peel it, as noted in the quote. * Add [id], since idiomatic * Explain a bit more, since bamboo shoots not familiar to most English readers I heard this from an old monk at 妙心寺 大心院 (where you can do 宿坊, recommended!), answering why the walls of the temple were plain: they had previously been decorated, but they’d had to sell off the artwork to keep the temple going. (They also make money from the 宿坊, of course.) |

|
3. | A* 2012-03-26 11:25:10 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | The 段々 entry has just had a "uk" (usually kana) tag put on it. In tomorrow's update it should become part of the だんだん that is matched in the Text Glossing function. I'll leave this open to remind me to check it works OK. |
|
2. | A* 2012-03-26 03:22:13 Kevin Bradley <...address hidden...>
Comments: | This is coming up as the default reading in text glossing when the hiragana for DANDAN is used instead of kanji. Native speakers will write this as hiragana and text glossing translations will suffer. This is a local dialect word. |

Comments: | I'm not sure "jumping out" works that well (I guess it's from daijirin?) daijisen and the jlogos dictionary (benesse) use the word 現れる, and daijisen's example is 「考えがぽっと浮かぶ」 here's another example where none of the senses really work: バンドを解散してからソロでなかなか実績があがらず 芸能界もここまでかと言う時に ぽっと出た、新人とのユニットの話 at first I thought it was similar to daijisen's example (if it modifies 話) but the more I think the more it seems to be a reference to ぽっと出 (if it modifies 新人) I also tried scouring yourei.jp for more examples but the vast majority are senses 1 & 2. the remaining ones that seem to confirm my hypothesis are 東京に、ぽっと出たわたし / 田舎町からぽっと出てきた青年 / 九州の田舎からぽっと人形町の叔母の家に来て there might be a fifth sense? |
