井の中の蛙、大海を知らず井の中の蛙大海を知らず [sK]
いのなかのかわず、たいかいをしらず
1. [exp] [proverb]
▶ the frog in the well knows nothing of the great ocean
Cross references:
⇐ see: 2832631 井蛙は以って海を語る可からず【せいあはもってうみをかたるべからず】 1. a narrow-minded person cannot understand the ways of the world; a frog in the well cannot understand the ocean even if it is explained to it

  Comments:
Agree.
12. A* 2024-03-26 22:40:10  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>

A couple websites which add a space character after 蛙 instead of a comma.
https://imidas.jp/proverb/detail/X-02-C-02-5-0011.html
https://nativecamp.net/heync/question/27726

Many of my refs (Kanjipedia, gendai reikai, daijirin, meikyo) display the readings inline with this expression, so 蛙大海 is displayed as 蛙(かわず)大海(たいかい). That sort of setup makes the expression easier to parse. That option isn't available to us here, but we can use a comma to achieve the same sort of effect.
  Comments:
I wouldn't suggest that we start inserting commas everywhere they may be useful without regard for real-world usage. But the comma usage here is supported by some minor Japanese refs, and I think the utility of the comma is more important than the inconsistency with the major refs.
11. A* 2024-03-26 21:47:49  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Should we really use commas for expressions where they aren't common? It's useful for breaking down the expression, but the implication is that this is the most common form.
10. A* 2024-03-26 19:47:53  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Refs:
The "故事成語を知る辞典" (linked below) seems to be the only ref that uses a comma. I have 8 other refs that don't use it (Daijr/s, koj, kanjipedia, etc.).
  Comments:
The comma here seems useful to me.

The usual practice is to put the surface forms in order of "commonness". See http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Kanji.2FSpecial-Character_Forms We don't usually have a comment on which are the really common ones, or we'd have far too many such comments (almost invariably the first one or two dominate). Apologies - I didn't look hard enough at Stephen's proposal. I agree we shouldn't be using such fragments as "rK" forms, at least at this stage.
9. A* 2022-08-24 00:45:26  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Whether or not we want to use search-only forms in this way, I don't think it's safe to do so as long as they're included with the other forms. Many sites/apps don't support the new tags yet. Some probably never will.
For the next generation of JMDict, I'd like to see search-only forms handled separately (i.e. in a different part of the XML). Then we can at least consider ideas like this.
And I agree with Marcus regarding the n-grams. The fact that both 前門の虎 and 後門の狼 have nearly identical counts suggests that they're almost always used together. Online search results appear to confirm this.

I'm not sure we should be using sK for things like this? Feels like we could be opening up a can of worms here. The reason the individual parts get more hits in the ngrams is frequently a problem with the searchability of the ngrams rather than real evidence the individual parts are frequent on their own.

True, but we are usually comfortable having entries based on ones in major kokugos.
The entry causes no damage; is not misleading, etc., etc. JMdict is not being improved by trying to delete these sorts of entries.

Explanation of the English idiom to Japanese people. Doesn't use this phrasing(because it's not Japanese, and has no explanatory power for Japanese people):
https://www.shane.co.jp/column/detail/id=18928
Two is company, three is a crowd.(2人なら仲間、3人は群衆)
「2人でいると親密な関係を楽しめるのに、3人では仲間割れが起こってしまう」という意味です。
  Comments:
My quixotic adventure continues. daijs protects vocabulary, I get that. But jmdict does not aim to collect every random calque of western idioms...

Based on a google book search, this showed up in a kotowaza book in the 1970s and made it into daijs(From which Marcus added it in 2018). Almost certainly someone's literal translation of the English equivalent. It has gained no traction. It is present nowhere(save for a couple kotowaza dictionaries, and one privately published test-prep book, below).

"仲間割れ" is common (and has a jmdict entry), "3人(で)は仲間割れ" appears by chance(still rare). Explanations of the English idiom use something like "2人は良い連れ". "get along well". No one uses "伴侶" for this.

It should be deleted because it serves no purpose here. It will never be encountered in the wild, if it is encountered, its meaning is self-evident, and most importantly, no English speaker should use it and expect to be understood. Marking this "rare" just leaves a trap for people who look up "伴侶" and stumble into it. (or who look up "two is company").

By chance the one place it pops up is a Tokyo University question booklet that asks, "give two idioms with the same number and connection".
Q26 「二人は伴侶三人は仲間割れ」ということわざでの数字と関連があることわざを 2 つ挙げよ。ヒント...
Here is that book:
私の東大クイズ
https://www.google.co.jp/books/edition/私の東大クイズ_3/ib4MAwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq="二人は伴侶、三人は仲間割れ"&pg=SL17-PA26&printsec=frontcover

Note, the book doesn't expect the student to know the idiom. It's just used as fodder to prompt for an actual Japanese idiom.

The book is not published by the university. It's got two reviews and 1 star on Amazon. Reviews say it's garbage.
