Refs: | These are not "boxes" to me, but are ボックス in Japanese: https://www.chuubou.com/products/list.php?category_id=2101 |
|
Comments: | If you just image search ボックス, you will see a lot of rectangular containers that you probably wouldn't call a "box". I encountered one at a tabehoudai that definitely does not overlap for me(see new entry バスボックス). You were required to bus your own table. A sign said "don't put drinks/ice/etc. in the trash, ボックスへお願い". I looked around for anything looking like a "box" I could put liquid in, and was flummoxed. Had to ask a Japanese person. She pointed at a big plastic tub for used dishes.... Leave the liquid in the dish, put in the box... (I did *not* know this was called a "bus tub/bin/box" in English). I weighed sticking "tub" as a gloss under [1], vs. adding to the xrefs. "tub" might have somewhat addressed my specific tabehoudai confusion, but I think it is potentially misleading about the general meaning of ボックス. Basically, I don't think ボックス is likely to refer to a tub, *unless* it is a "bus tub". And if I search for "ボックス" while at a restaurant, the only way I'll find "バスボックス" is with an xref from here. And there are バスボックス in most cafes all over Japan, so it's not an uncommon object(even if usually unlabeled, this is the first time I've noticed it written). I wouldn't push for [abbr] xrefs to the hundreds of *ボックス terms that probably exist, but this one term just seems like an unsolvable mystery without some guidance. From first-hand experience. == Based on image results, I think "storage bin" is pretty spot-on though. I see that in 2019 "rectangular storage container" was dropped when the senses were fleshed out. But there are plenty of "rectangular storage containers"(esp. plastic organizers) that I would not call boxes in English, that the Japanese would call ボックス. So I think something may have been lost there. The "i.e." in [1] kind of points at this. Maybe it's another sense too. |

Comments: | Thanks for the submission. I really think that in this case the decision we made in 2012 to avoid attempting to classify the usage into transitive/intransitive groupings and set up senses accordingly was the right one. I think the previous sense split based on the core meanings was more appropriate. I'll put it back that way, and add "to rejoice". |

Comments: | Proposals 1: Classify [1], [2] and [3] as transitive, intransitive and *transitive respectively. Reasoning: While the strict classification of the verb as either transitive or ambitransitive differs across the Japanese sources that do explicitly make that demarcation, this should cover all grounds. *This one might have reason to remain neutral. 2: Further translation of [2]: to rejoice. Translation supported by both GG5 and JWN. 3: Inversion of [1] and [2]. Reasoning: Firstly, of the three referents that did state transitivity: 1 was transitive, 1 was ambitransitive and 1 was intransitive; however, even the one that said intransitive still used example sentences with を. Out of those of the remainder which did not: 2 suggest either ambitransitive or transitive based on use of を in example sentences and transitive constructions in all but one of definitions across both. GG5 did use example sentences with を but lacks definitions in Japanese. And the last, JWN, uses transitive structures for the definitions but has no example sentences. Based on the above I would say that the overwhelming majority of instances tends to either transitivity or ambitransivity, with only one clearly supporting exclusive intransitivity. Secondly, there seems to be no circumstance under which a supposedly intransitive variant cannot be interpreted as a transitive verb with an omitted object. Thirdly, If this is true then assuming transitivity will still deliver you the same semantic content of what would be the counterpart, but the same is not true of the opposite, therefore the former takes precedence over the latter. Lastly, the previous three points when joined not only seem to indicate a preference for the transitive hypothesis but may also substantiate forsaking the intransitive hypothesis entirely. |

Comments: | GG5 labels both むくみ and ふしゅ "医". The "Igaku" glossary uses the むくみ reading. GG5 simply points ふしゅ to むくみ. I think the whole entry should be "med" and kept as one. As for "io", that was my first thought until I saw the 中辞典 and Unific entries. It's not really okurigana for むくみ so much as a masu stem of 浮腫む. It's all a bit bizarre as 浮腫/むくみ is probably a case of 義訓 so okurigana shouldn't come into it. On balance I'd go with "io". |

Comments: | I didn't have (standard) okurigana variants in mind when we came up with that threshold. Since they're recorded in the kokugos (the larger ones, at least), I've always considered them to be in a different category from 交ぜ書き forms, forms containing katakana instead of hiragana, etc. Interested to hear what others think. On 1614070, it was tentatively agreed to use a 3% threshold (my proposal) for standard okurigana variants but this was a year before the discussion on 2839852 where we decided on the 20% threshold. Maybe 3% is too low but I feel that 20% is too high for these forms. |

Restaurant supply, バスボックス (with pictures) https://www.atta-v.com/products/list.php?category_id=754 ===== The rest is just English support for tub/bin/box https://sprudge.com/lets-talk-bus-tub-109685.html The barista working the register pointed behind me and said, “Actually, there’s a bus tub behind you, if you don’t mind.” Amazon category: "Food Service Bus Tubs" https://www.amazon.com/Food-Service-Bus-Tubs/b?ie=UTF8&node=5298300011 https://www.wincous.com/product-category/back-of-house/bussing-transport/dish-bush-boxes/ https://www.rubbermaidcommercial.com/food-service/beverage-table-service/busutility-boxes/ https://twitter.com/daiquiriheiress/status/1766574377175286266 honestly some of the restaurants i worked at I’d rather you fuckin steal it so I didn’t have to put it in the bus bin and shatter it |
|
Comments: | This is "bus" as in "bussing a table". Japanese does not seem to use バス as the verb "bussing", which suggests this whole term was imported from English as-is. I think an "i.e." or [expl] is important here, because this is an item you may see every day in Japan(if you frequent cafes), but until today I could not have told you what this term means in English. If we had a "food services" category I'd use that. In context, Japanese people will apparently understand ボックス alone to represent this thing. tub, bin, and box all exist in English for this. "tub" seems the most natural to me, and has the best twitter matches. "bin" follows. "box" exists on commercial websites(which supports the idea that バスボックス is an imported term), but still surprises me and seems less common in colloquial use. |
