I'm not entirely opposed to the idea, but I'm not really sure what's at stake. The form isn't completely hidden, just moved to a note.

We've used this style on quite a few entries recently. See 1164780 (一挺), 1167270 (一旒), 1299600 (杜鵑花), 1260670 (因・もと), 1588320 (撮す), etc.

Since this is a policy decision that affects many entries, it would be best to have this discussion on github or the mailing list.

i don't think it's a good idea to hide a kanji form that is in multiple references and in absolute numbers pretty common
imo it's better to split it off and cross-reference it

I am proposing that we gloss this sense with something like "to take issue with; to make a problem of; to bring up (as a point of criticism)"

Meikyo 2e has the 採 form for this sense, but the third edition dropped it. I think we can make 採り上げる a hidden form and add a note to sense 02, which is where most refs put it. I wouldn't object to splitting it into a separate entry either.

Of all the references I checked (JES & Kokugos) only Meikyo mentioned 採り上げる. GG5 has sense 2 for 取り上げる so that "esp." looks rather doubtful. Also, the JEs have 4 senses which I think works well. I think the 7 senses is overdoing it.
I'd be OK with making 採り上げる [sK], goin back to 4 senses, and stripping out all the notes and restrictions.

Interesting. Was juxtaposed with 心を開く (which I just edited as well), same meaning, mixing up vocab.

Same stubborn old woman, after trying to win her over:
このばあさん、全然心開かねえぞ。 1. "This old woman isn't opening her heart at all" 2."This old woman just refuses to open up"
1: If Himmel or Heiter were here, ... "半一くらいで打ち解けているはずなのに" "she would have opened up in half a day".
2: "Sorry, Himmel or Heiter could have gotten her to open up in half a day."

"to throw off reserve" appears to be quite well dated. First non-dictionary result on google was a text from the mid-1800s.

1 result on all of reddit is a false-positive. no news results, no twitter results.

"frank" seems to be pointed at a no-longer-common connotation of the word. I can be frank with someone who I don't like at all, and am totally uncomfortable being around(frank = direct-and-to-the-point. "let me be frank"). The weblio ref puts "frank" next to "open" (which I've added) and "candid" which is better, but also has connotation issues. I think "unreserved", which hints at 打ち解けない = reserved, works better.

  Comments:
Perhaps also/instead: "to dream of becoming".

I've seen this a couple of times now as [profession]に憧れていた. If I just google "に憧れ" I get hits like:
私の息子は獣医に憧れている
and this:
「私は弁護士に憧れて、法学部に入りました。」

None of the current glosses seem to handle this.

We could squeeze the senses into [1], but they are at odds with other, and both [1] and [2] are possible for the same structure depending on context. Eijiro currently has, for example:
スターに憧れる
star-struck

But I'll bet "I wanted to be a movie star" is also possible. Giving two senses makes it explicit that this ambiguity exists.

My most recent sighting: お前は冒険者なのか。俺もずっと昔、冒険者に憧れていた。-> "I used to dream of being an adventurer too". Other(better) translation: You're an adventurer? I wanted to be one a long time ago.

シャッター開閉機	100

A hand-operated screw-type 開閉機 for opening and closing water gates
https://www.kanae.co.jp/result/detail/?pdid=60
Google translate: Our flat-winding type "KFH opening/closing machine"
  Comments:
Google search didn't turn up any railway gates at all. Instead, the *primary* result is chain-drive motors for opening and closing the kinds of metal shutters that block out ground-level shops when they are closed for business. "opening and shutting machine", if you will... Second results are big metal hand-operated wheels for opening and closing water gates (refs).

There is a name for this product, but it doesn't work well in a vacuum.
シャッター開閉機 = "shutter operator" (refs are a business website with Japanese and English translations). We can't very well stick "operator" as a gloss though.

daijs has this entry. sankoku does not.

If you search 開閉機 鉄道, google images *still* doesn't return any legitimate railroad searches.

Clearly [2] is dominant today, and not entirely uncommon. I don't think dropping [1] entirely would be a great loss, but it's in daijs, so [rare] at least.

  Comments:
Thanks for the explanations on your decision. And sorry for the long reply. I was just worried that if I didn't go into the whole thought process, it might seem like I was arguing for a very nit-picky thing, when really for me it's much more of a big-picture kind of question.

With that in mind, I notice that no one has yet responded to the point I made about JMDICT being the data source for many Japanese language learning tools, and even if data may not reflect popularity (as in the example of "(wa) katakana at top"), it may still be worthwhile for the sake of documenting the language itself.

All that said, I respect and accept your decision on this particular entry; but I'm still interested in hearing your thoughts/opinions about this more 'philosophical' point about how JMDICT should (or should not) attempt to support language learners, rather than just reflect current-day usage.

Is such discussion appropriate in these comments or is there another/better way I can ask about this kind of thing?

Jim, I'll look for your email address and try to email you. Thanks for the offer. [D'oh! I see it now at the top of the confirmation page.]
8. A 2020-04-03 06:24:04  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Thanks, Marcus. I think that covers it, and I'll close this off now. I don't mind having the kanji form shown on the basic forms (GG5 has 可き in the べき entry), but I do think it is inappropriate to have them in the virtually-always-kana expressions.
Re この/此の/etc. I see Daijirin and GG5 have the 此の, but the other JEs don't.
Marcus: I've added a GitHub issue for [rare]
Rob: if you want to find out more about the n-grams, email me. They are not the counts you get from Google searches, which are almost useless.

Stats on 見覚えのある entry.

Teasing this out... this is に見覚えがある, so *I* have the recollection *of* the thing. I am the subject. I think I thought this was more complicated. But the statement "見覚えのある" is "it is familiar to me", "I have remembrances of it".

Notice "to look familiar" and "to recognize" have different subjects in English. This is not ideal... Maybe just giving the natural glosses plus an explicit [lit] gloss clears this up? I'm not fond of ambiguous subjects... And I'm not a fan of "to be recognized (by someone)" as a gloss.

[adj-f] debatable. Clearly can be, but usually 見覚えのある for that.
You could give this the verb class of ある. We don't currently generally do that, but I think it's been discussed. This is perfectly valid with あった、あります、なかった, etc...

The reading on pixiv is apparently incorrect; it should be 〜がえし.
We can't gloss this identically to まんぐり返し. The reason why this word exists (ちん- in contrast with まん-) needs to be explained.

If this entry is needed, I think it needs more work. Nicolas, a little more effort would be appreciated.

より
1. [unc] [obs]
▶ historical kana ligature of yo and ri

History:
4. D 2024-02-24 10:15:31  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
OK, as suggested I've added it as an [sk] reading in the より entry (1013190).
It's an odd one - it's the sole ligature in the Unicode hiragana block. AFAIK it's not in the JIS kana tables.
3. A* 2024-02-20 01:40:37  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
This makes it look like a kanji with the reading より. I think it either needs to be a reading or put in a note on the より entry (where it could be added as an sk form so that it's searchable).
Since it's kana, I don't think there's any issue with putting it in the readings field.
2. A* 2024-02-18 01:14:57  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

I don't think we can regard the Unicode ゟ ligature as a reading. Maybe this will work. (The database software doesn't like it being treated as a kanji either.)

Maybe the entry should redirect to より? Anyway, I think that all kana ligatures should eventually be in the JMdict, just like the obsolete kana such as ゑ. Although dated, they're part of Japanese and of Unicode. They can be seen in the wild.
