"そう言われたら通じるけど、使わないかな" |
|
Comments: | だく・だかれる has an ambiguity in it, it means both to carry (a baby) and to hug without carrying (even if だく by itself, outside of compounds, isn't frequently used with that 2nd meaning). In the case of 抱っこ, this ambiguity isn't really there, to my understanding. "Hug" does maybe to a small extent have the same ambiguity but I don't think including it adds much, but distracts some. I can't speak as to what was happening in the quoted manga. The typical [chn] word for "hug" is ギュー or ギュッ. |

These guardians used to be painted red and white and are distinguishable by their facial expressions: the open-mouthed animal is a karashishi, or “Chinese lion,” while the close-mouthed beast, which once had a single horn protruding from its head, is called a komainu, or “Korean dog.” Plenty of "Chinese Lion" here. https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/唐獅子 https://www.britannica.com/art/karajishi …called komainu (“Korean dogs”) or karajishi (“Chinese lions”) are placed in front of a shrine. Originally they served to protect the sacred buildings from evil and defilements. |
|
Comments: | Wiktionary says "karajishi" is an English word now. Didn't add the gloss though. Reversed the readings. MacOS IME supports only じし, sankoku gives only じし, wikipedia articles seem to use じし, furigana.info is 15-to-5 in favor of this reading. As for the xref, it seems clear that 獅子 can mean 唐獅子, so maybe the reverse xref is more necessary. I think the entry in 獅子[2] is perhaps overly specific (or that a third, more general "mythical Chinese lion" sense may be warranted). Or we can just let the xrefs do the heavy lifting. It seems that *some* shinto 獅子 are 唐獅子, but that 唐獅子 does not generally indicate a statue. Google the English "karashishi" or "karajishi". Lots of English-language treatments of this term which literally translates to Chinese (唐) + Chinese Lion(獅子). Examples are bountiful. Usually appears simply as "Chinese lion", but this would be ambiguous without context. Obviously all representations are artistic. "Chinese lions" are mythical. Nothing about "portrait" baked into 唐獅子 though. |

Comments: | I have some doubts on the "three-quarter view" definition - the reason being that searching through google image "クォータービュー" gives widely different results than what you get with "three-quarter view" or "three-quarter view games". The definition for "isometric view" is: "It is an axonometric projection in which the three coordinate axes appear equally foreshortened and the angle between any two of them is 120 degrees. " and this is easily noticeable in the first link above, also these are the results for an image search for "クォータービュー" On the other hand, "three-quarter view" is used in the context of art/painting in which it means an in-between of front and side view, and in the context of videogames with a search for "three-quarter view games" brings up results such as "legend of zelda: a link to the past" (second link above) and "final fantasy 6" (third link above), which like for the meaning of three-quarter in art, show only 2 sides of things (in this case front and top) instead of the three sides like the isometric view does. In short, googling "クォータービュー" doesn't bring up "three-quarter view" results so I think that's not accurate |
