Comments: | I agree that the meaning is pretty much the same as sense 4, but the examples Marcus gave, and which I've encountered often, are not really adverbs or "before a verb in negative form". I feel trying to fit this particular usage into sense 4 would lead to an odd POS and clashing glosses. The [abbr] and reference to ちょっと難しい can be dropped. |

Comments: | I see some refs which describe jukujikun as kun readings of established kanji compounds (from Chinese; e.g. 昨日・きのう, 今朝・けさ) as opposed to words which acquired novel kanji representations (流石・さすが, 一寸・ちょっと, 麦酒・ビール). They consider the latter group to be ateji. I guess it's probably best to continue using the [ateji] tag only in the narrow sense. Definitely less confusing. |

Refs: | Refs say the 流石 kanji form derives from kanbun: 枕流漱石(流れに枕し石に漱ぐ). Daijirin has a long note explaining how the word itself originated from a combination of the adverb さ, the verb suffix す, and the particle がに. Several kokugos (daijirin, iwakoku, smk) refer to 流石 as "当て字" or "借字", which doesn't make any sense to me. Those references also have 流石 marked with their usual jukujikun symbols. |
|
Comments: | I feel like [ateji] here is inconsistent with how we normally use the tag. As far as I can tell, there's no phonetic connection to these kanji. |

Comments: | I'm suggesting this correction because the current meaning can be misinterpreted as the cat starting off with two tails (as some sort of birth defect), which instead are a result of the transformation of an old cat into a Nekomata. When the cat transforms (because of old age), then the tail splits. Also the current meaning could be interpreted as the already Nekomata (because of the two tails mentioned before) being able to further transform itself into a terrifying creature, but I haven't found any reference for that in the japanese wikipedia page in the section about the "house cat Nekomata". All I've found is that it either deceives (老いたネコは『猫股』となって人を惑わす) or brings harm to humans (飼い猫も年を経ると化けて人を食ったりさらったりする). Some nekomata depictions in the ref. above. |

Comments: | We have "excellence" as a gloss for 優, so it's probably not good to reuse it here. The lack of quality references for this word is concerning. Not sure we need entries for rare and possibly nonstandard constructions like this. Our entry for 最 already has a [prefix] sense. |
