Comments: | I think it says it's a noun because it describes the state of encountering a disaster 「災難にあうこと」. Dictionaries don't say it means just 災難. It's the same with all nouns to which you are allowed to put する to. For example 勉強: the act of studying, 勉強する: to study. I think the current glosses are missleading and it's a pretty common word so beginners who don't use monolingual dictionaries won't know the true meaning of the word and won't know the difference between 遭難 and 災難. |

Comments: | This and 洗面所 are commonly used for the part of the bathroom (or the antechamber to the bathroom if yu prefer) where you have a basin and a washing machine in a Japanese home. While sure, it is a changing room, this isn't what it'd normally be called in English, would it? Based on Google images, I think this sense should lead. I think 洗面所 should be more o less aligned w this sense. |

Comments: | Sense [2] Context: a dragons nest: 魔力のこもったものを営巣の材料にする translated as "objects infused with magic" In [3], the subject is the thing doing the filling (hence our placeholder of "the room"). It would seem that it is the same in [2]. If the subject is the "emotion/enthusiasm/etc.", it seems inconsistent to structure this as "to be filled with". This suggests something like 手紙が愛情にこもった. I added an [oft] note which I think clarifies what's going on. Maybe that and the xref are enough to clear up what is happening. Now that I look at it, [3] really has the same problem. "to be heavy with", "to be stuffy", "to be dense" (should this be "to be dense with...smoke, etc."?). For purely practical reasons, maybe a dedicated entry for こもった makes sense? I found two [expr] here that use it(and xref'd them), but if you find こもった in the wild you have to be able to turn it back to a verb to find this entry, and it seems like ~のこもった is a pretty common and useful structure. The sankoku examples use this structure (意味が~、心のこもったおくりもの) I included もの in the [note] the way I would include [something] in an English gloss as a placeholder for any noun.... This seems clearer to me with than without, but that's just my take. |

▶ historical kana ligature of yo and ri |
4. | D 2024-02-24 10:15:31 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | OK, as suggested I've added it as an [sk] reading in the より entry (1013190). It's an odd one - it's the sole ligature in the Unicode hiragana block. AFAIK it's not in the JIS kana tables. |
|
3. | A* 2024-02-20 01:40:37 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | This makes it look like a kanji with the reading より. I think it either needs to be a reading or put in a note on the より entry (where it could be added as an sk form so that it's searchable). Since it's kana, I don't think there's any issue with putting it in the readings field. |

2. | A* 2024-02-18 01:14:57 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

Comments: | Saw flyers and posters for classes at Shinjuku Ward Sports Center as HIIT with ヒート furigana. ヒット also appears online. Has value as an entry because the pronunciations are novel. Wikipedia doesn't even include the readings, interestingly. Almost certainly not エイチ・アイ・アイ・ティー. If you want to be strict about etymology, I suspect ヒット is indeed from English "hit"(video ref), while ヒート is a native interpretation of the acronym. |
