Comments: | That "~な" is not strongly supported. I think the key point is how the Japanese is glossed; not the precise definitions of the English words in the glossing. |

8. | A* 2024-02-21 13:46:26 Ben Bullock <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | The previous commenter, Robin Scott, claimed that the Wiktionary entry and Wikipedia entry supported the idea that a countable set could be finite. But Wiktionary gives two different definitions of the word in mathematics, and Wikipedia goes into some detail about the two different definitions. The previously-mentioned text by Walter Rudin gives the notion that countable means infinite only, but the book I used at university (G.F. Simmons "Introduction to Topology and Modern Analysis") defines countable to mean either finite or countably infinite. |

|
Comments: | A countable set can be finite. The kokugos and 世界大百科事典 treat 可算集合 and 可付番集合 as synonyms. Several sources say that "countable" and "enumerable" are equivalent whereas "denumerable" only means "countably infinite". |

Comments: | According to the translation of the Rudin book, 可付番 is denumerable or enumerable in mathematics. I'm not entirely sure whether this is the same as "countable", since "countable" in mathematics means that it is infinite. The Rudin translation gives "たかだか可算" for "at most countable" which means either finite or countable (infinite but denumerable). I'll try to look up in other texts later on. Unfortunately it seems that fools like myself rush in to add dictionary entries without the necessary expertise. |

Comments: | I went to the library today and looked at about fifty or sixty Japanese maths books. More than half of them use the squares, either filled or unfilled. Only one used 証明の終わり, two or three books used 証明終, and about a third of the books used no marker at all. I found no other examples of 証終, but one other thing turned up which was 証了 for the end of the proof. I have a reference somewhere for that book if you are interested. |

Comments: | In a mathematics text the marker of the end of the proof is used to aid the reader to distinguish between the proof's text and whatever remarks the author might add after the proof has finished. It's often marked with a black square or a white square like ■ or □ instead. This usage is restricted to mathematics texts of course, but it's commonly seen even on the internet. https://service.zkai.co.jp/books/toudai/pdf/k6.pdf http://www.misojiro.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~murota/lect-kisosuri/cauchyseq041109.pdf https://www.math.tsukuba.ac.jp/~tange/jugyo/18/slide.pdf A lot of the PDFs found with Google seem to have the ability to search the text switched off, but there are examples here: https://horibe.jp/PDFBOX/HD_pi.pdf As far as I can tell, there are not many Japanese mathematics books available in online form, so what I'll do is go to the library and take some pictures of various random maths books. Hopefully that will be enough to "end the proof" that this is a real word. |

Comments: | Thanks for those examples, Ben. I can see it being discussed in that context. I guess not many mathematical proofs turn up as web pages. I'll lock it in with a note and reopen for further discussion, if any. |

Comments: | I don't think we should say it's an abbr "証明が終わった" unless we're really sure that's ehat it's an abbr of. It culd e.g. be sth like 証明終了 perhaps. |

A* 2024-02-13 13:59:37 Ben Bullock >> I went to the library today and looked at about fifty or sixty Japanese maths books. |

Comments: | I think this is the usual tag style. (About ~90 entries in the database with the [abbr] tag and sense notes beginning with "from") I'd gloss this as "end of proof marker" only if it is a name for the ■ symbol. Otherwise we probably shouldn't include the word "marker" in the gloss. |
