  Comments:
I'm seeing plenty of examples of sense 2 on Twitter. I suspect that "junkie" is the more common meaning outside of social media.
Also, as the "junk" sense is technically wasei, I don't think it can come ahead of the "junkie" senses. I wouldn't object to splitting it off into a separate wasei-tagged entry.
4. A* 2024-01-08 00:07:27  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think we need to make up our mind on sense order and formulate a clear policy on it. I think we should heavily prioritize actual usage, with some exceptions, but I don't think "the kokugos lead with x" should be one of those when that usage is uncommon.

Sankoku puts them in one entry. I think it's OK.
I don't think the "junk" sense should lead. None of my refs except sankoku have it. Most of the "word explainer" sites either don't mention it or put it at the end.

We currently have とわ as a reading in the 永久 entry, along with えいきゅう. Perhaps 永遠 can be added there as [sK]?. I don't think a distinct 永遠/とわ entry is needed.
Alternatively we could have a 永久/永遠/とわ entry, but even then 永遠 would probably be [rK] or [sK].

I don't think 搔く rates as [rK]. Kanjipedia is a form of kanwa; not the sort of reference we'd use to justify word level [rK] tags. 搔 entered the JIS standards in JIS X 0212 as an 異体字 of 掻. Even after 20+ years of Unicode it's still rather rare. Wiktionary says it's a 旧字体, but I don't take that as authorative.

As I understand it, the bureaucrats in the education ministry decided in 2000 that 搔 is the proper ("印刷標準") form of the kanji and 掻 is an acceptable simplified variant ("簡易慣用").

Practically every recently published kokugo from a variety of different publishers (daijirin, meikyo, iwakoku, etc.) uses these 印刷標準 kanji rather than the simplified forms.

Many entries will be much messier if we display both types of forms, so I think it's probably best to stick with one. Lately we've been hiding the "proper" forms and keeping the simplified forms visible. I think that's probably fine. If we want to switch to the 印刷標準 forms someday, it would be simple enough to write a script to swap them.

I agree [rK] probably isn't a good tag for these kanji forms, since they're quite a bit more common now than when the 2007 n-gram corpus was compiled. People are bound to encounter them frequently and wonder what they are. Maybe that information is better explained via a dedicated kanji dictionary rather than a vocabulary dictionary like JMdict.

  Comments:
"graven image" seemed a little out of place; obviously biblical. I don't see any such nuance in the kokugos.

It may be true that actual Bible translations use this term where "graven image" may appear (a couple examples appear in reverso). But this is a case where it seems to do more harm than good to suggest that this nuance has anything at all to do with the Japanese term.

Reverso gives plenty of other attempts at this biblical translation. 刻んだ像 and 偶像 seem more common. 偶像 (we gloss as "idol" among other things), seems like a better fit to me. And I wouldn't add "graven image" there either.

納屋(なや、英語: Barn)とは、主に別棟に建てられた物置小屋のことである。特に農家では農作物や農機具などを収納しておく小屋を指す。漁村では、舟や網を収納する小屋、もしくは若い漁師を起居させる網元が用意した小屋の事である。

Mostly barn, but here's a possible mistake below:
https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/納屋
Obvioulsly E->J
Morning 5 September, the siege began when Chief Winamac's forces attacked two soldiers returning from an outhouse.
9月5日朝、ウィナマック酋長の部隊が納屋から砦に戻る兵士2人を攻撃したときに包囲戦が始まった。

Now, is that outhouse a bathroom? (As an American reader, that's my understanding). Is it still a bathroom in Japanese?

daijs has 4 senses, none of them look like "bathroom" to me.
https://kotobank.jp/word/納屋-589913
  Comments:
This is more to do with English than Japanese. I think "outhouse" has too strong of a "tiny wooden outdoor bathroom" connotation in modern English to be useful here(or rather, it risks being strongly misleading here). Unless 納屋 can also have this connotation, which I don't think it does, I think we're better off dropping it.

  Comments:
I think this only means "moment" or" instant" in the negated idiomatic xref. Certainly there seems to be some time elapsing in all of the kokugo explanations, so "instant" seems especially suspect.

The glosses I've suggested look quite off to me without the articles("a"). I see they were dropped in 2011, but I think this term acts as an expression. For example, I don't think 片時 can be pluralized as "several short whiles".

Also of note. daijs translates 片時 as しばらくの間, but 片時の間 also exists. We gloss both しばらく and しばらくの間 similarly, but I'm not sure if 片時 here is an adverb.

  Comments:
The definition seems to be "to become ほうける due to illness", which could be any of the senses [1][2][3] in ほうける. It's possible that the rare 耄 more strongly aligns with the "wasting" sense. "Become senile due to illness" seems like it could also apply, and seems to match the daijs entry in my refs.

daijs gives 「病み~」 as an example under ほうける, which has three forms. (all of which we also have under the main ほうける entry, which is squished together with ぼける. Not sure if that's ideal).

We could [sk] やみほおける, but we don't give this under the main ほうける entry. I think this is a kana-reform change.(ほおけるー>ほうける)

Simplifying restrictions.

We could have キリのいい as a [nokanji] form, but we had a long discussion about this on entry 2127720 (駄目で元々) where we didn't reach a consensus.

Daijr/s, smk, sankoku all have やなぐい marked as jukujikun.
ころく is also in daijir/s and kanjipedia.

smk also has 箙 as a kanji form, but it's not in other refs. Sounds like it's usually "えびら." I don't think we need that form here.

Sometimes the giant clams are still treated as a separate family Tridacnidae, but modern phylogenetic analyses included them in the family Cardiidae as a subfamily.

gg5: a giant clam; Tridacna gigas.

From the wikipedia refs above, "Tridacnidae" seems to be a family rather than a subfamily. I think the correct subfamily name is "Tridacna."

I don't see the second sense mentioned in the kokugos, except in their entries for 七宝. Probably okay to add a [Buddh] tag.

There are many obscure A+B constructions in JMdict that we probably shouldn't record. The question is whether they're worth the time and effort to discuss and prune.

This one looks like it falls on the "we wouldn't add it today, but it's harmless" end of the spectrum. If it had close to 0 counts and no refs, I'd argue for removing it.

Good. I think 20% is fine for expressions and 交ぜ書き for the forms favouring kana. If the counts for 気が乗る and 気がのる were reversed I don't think I'd hide the 気が乗る form.

I agree. For forms that only differ in kana usage (hiragana/katakana, 交ぜ書き, etc.), I'm in favour of a minimum threshold of at least 20%. I don't think keeping these relatively uncommon forms visible is particularly helpful, especially when the word only contains jōyō kanji.

I don't think that contradicts anything I said. "この" in that sentence is just a substitute for the entire previous sentence. We have "この" tagged as "pre-noun adjectival (rentaishi)" in JMdict.

The point is that you wouldn't start that sentence with just "状況下" by itself. It would need to be "この状況下," "ある状況下," "ニュースが大量に流れてくる状況下," etc.

パニックコントロールとは、息切れが生じたときに、息切れの状態をスムーズに回復させることです。

Most of the top web results are about about dealing with shortness of breath, particularly in people with respiratory illnesses.
I'm struggling to find any other examples where it refers to preventing panic in crowds. Is it possible that the JAL official just came up with パニックコントロール on the fly?

We have 啼声 as a hidden form on our entry for 鳴き声, but I'd assume it's more likely to be read ていせい.

Daijisen references a translation of "Self-Help" by Samuel Smiles published in the late 1800s. I think [obs] is probably okay.
