Bunkers, on the other hand, provide ships with fuel they need to operate Three hits(any of these glosses would be fine with me as well, but I went looking for 'technical' terms...): 1. refueling ship 2. fuel vessel 3. fuel barge https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/給油船 https://www.marineinsight.com/types-of-ships/bunker-ships So, bunker ships are small tankers transporting and carrying bunker fuel used for ship propulsion. They can transfer fuel to a recipient’s vessel while on a voyage. One important point is that tankers transporting marine fuel oil for mass supply or distribution at ports are “not” bunker ships. Bunker ships transport marine or other associated fuels required for a vessel operation, like lubes, directly to a vessel. Transferring these fuels to a sailing or afloat ship from its storage is known as “bunkering.” So, while bunker ships are widely used for midsea fuelling, they are used for fuelling ships at the shore or close to shore and where supplies may be scarce. Note the URL "oil supply" and the service offered 船舶旧友 (5 給油船 ships, with pictures of each) https://www.toaunyu.co.jp/oil_supply/ Wikipedia https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/タンカー#給油船 Subsection: 給油船 港湾などで他の船に給油をするための船。50-300トン程の比較的小型で小回りのきく船が多い。 google trans: A ship used to refuel other ships at a port. Bunkering tanker or bunker barge. They will typically come alongside larger ships either at anchor or at a dock. The large tankers that fuel Navy ships are called fleet oilers or fleet replenishment oiler. They are equipped to refuel ships while at sea. |
|
Comments: | The term "(oil) tanker" would seem to me to denote a massive ship carrying oil overseas. Google image search, and the wikipedia pages, show that 給油船 is not that(even though some JE refs claim it, I think they are off). A 給油船 is a smaller ship meant for refueling other ships. (even if it qualifies as a "small" tanker). Two big English wikipedia pages on "Tanker" and then "Oil Tanker" specifically do not cover any refueling ships explicitly. A tanker is for bulk transport, it would seem, not for refueling (in English). It's mentioned under the Japanese "tanker" wikipedia page, but in it's own little section. What really blew my mind... A straight image search for "refueling tanker" returns planes, and "fuel tanker" returns trucks. So, both "tanker" and "oil tanker" would be completely ambiguous as to mode of transport... (i.e. "tanker truck") |
