運命 [ichi1,news1,nf07]
うんめい [ichi1,news1,nf07] さだめ [gikun]
1. [n,adj-no]
▶ fate
▶ destiny
▶ lot
Cross references:

History:
12. A 2024-01-03 17:36:46  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Personally, I don't have any problem with recording weird gikun data like this. I think JMdict has some structural quirks that make them difficult to merge, though. If we added 運命 to the entry for 定め, we wouldn't be able to use the [gikun] tag on the reading because that tag is only true for 運命, not 定め. We'd also have to add some sense restrictions. It would be a little messy.

Since this entry, うんめい【運命】, only has one sense and one kanji form, and the sense happens to be the correct meaning for さだめ【運命】, we can add that gikun reading cleanly. Not every situation is as clean as this one, though.
11. A* 2024-01-03 10:15:10  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Sorry to comment late on an approved/closed entry, I'm happy with the result. Just to reply to Stephen on-record in case the discussion ever comes up again:

It's not so much that 運命 might be randomly pronounced さだめ when reading(I agree, it wouldn't without furigana). Rather, it's the other way around: if you want to *write* さだめ in kanji, there are two commonly-recognized kanji orthographies: 1. 定め 2. 運命+furigana. (the latter less common, of course).

This is why I mentioned the alternative of adding 運命 to the さだめ entry instead. But I know this isn't how jmdict is usually used(J->E translation/decipherment). Whether さだめ is here, or 運命 is in the other entry, there is probably not much practical impact.

9. A* 2024-01-01 07:59:18  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Refs:
Sankoku also records gikun forms like そら【宇宙】. You do see things like this a lot in popular media, especially song lyrics. I wouldn't think anyone would read the word this way without furigana, though.

It's marked as a 熟字訓 in sankoku, so I think we'd be correct to use the [gikun] tag.

I think Brian makes a good case for さだめ being visibly associated with 運命, and an [ik] tag is probably the best approach. I guess [gikun] is an alternative.

I used to need the tags on both forms to get the (P) in EDICT, but that's no longer the case. The "newsX" was basically a ranking based on a 20yo newspaper analysis. The "news2" ones didn't even generate a (P). No need to remove them, I guess.

more than half of the products actually use のぼり/ノボリ in the title, several don't even feature it in the description (i.e. it's an "sK" essentially)
https://www.monotaro.com/s/?c=&q=のぼり のぼり 1309 hits
  Comments:
Well, I've done it several times after getting an OK from Jim, so there will already be several entries where the kanji form doesn't have the same tags as the hiragana. I think having frequency tags on little used kanji forms makes things for users because the obvious implication is that the kanji is very common and worth prioritizing when the reality is, like here, that it's very sparsely used.

  Comments:
I don't recall seeing priority tags removed from borderline-rare kanji forms. In any case, this one doesn't seem to be borderline.

There's already a [uk] tag to indicate that のぼり is more common.

There are some technical app-dev reasons why I'd rather have the priority tags in both fields in this situation. It would be a different story if we were adding an [rK] tag to 幟.

As the recent commenter noted, nikk has an entry for this as an abbreviation, pointing to 「板裏草履」 aka 「板草履」, meaning a thonged sandal with a piece of wood under it. The reverso snowboard sentences seem to be 板+裏.

No references have been forthcoming supporting the submitted meanings (copied from 「裏板」).

seems just like a variant of "裏板", which already has an entry
nikk also has an entry for "板裏" which seems to mean wooden zouri

I've proposed reviving the 甲子園 entry in jmdict. I think we can omit the tournament info here.

That appears to be the German name. It's not clear to me that it's widely used in English.

I think because we don't want to spend time arguing over which JMnedict entries deserve the [spec1] tag, we're just apply the tag to all entries with the [product] tag, [company] tag, etc.

This word (from 2012) is too new to be reflected in the n-gram counts (from 2007). Both JA and EN wikis have an article for it. I'd say that is enough of a reason to include this entry in the JMdict file.

  Comments:
not the commenter, but I read the commenter's question as:
why does this deserve spec1?
why is this common enough to be included in jmdict?

same thing for 5746459.2, 5000045.2
