"By going to Portugal he could champion the oppressed, display his chivalry and self-denial, uphold constitutional rule, and enjoy the freedom of action he craved." "In a castle, a castle tower had been a manifestation of dominance over the territory and a display of power against other domains and threats, that is, a symbol of legitimacy." |

Comments: | Encountered in my anime. One translator literally chose "flaunting" the other "showing off" ("their magic strength"). These are easily verified glosses. You can add "ostentation" to my list of new English vocabulary... My original inclination was to change this to "ostentatious display" (as in "an ostentatious display of wealth"). eijiro actually has "display ~ ostentatiously". You might like some other terms on the list... After looking over actual reverso glosses, though, I'm reluctantly inclined to give "display" as a direct gloss(3rd-most popular on reverso), but with an "e.g." that makes it clear why it can work alone. I guess we could switch "display" for "displaying", but then it would be hard to squeeze "of" into the structure, and that seems like a nice hint... well, either way. Does not appear to be [adj-no]. Was tempted to write out: (ostentatious) display (e.g. of power, of wealth, etc.) This seems perfectly correct, but I worry you'd find it too ugly. |

Both, as noted earlier, are marked as dialects (we have marked 辛気臭い as kansai-ben). Both senses appear to me to be variants of [2]: [1] (もと関西方言)気がくさくさして、めいるようすだ。

Comments: | Strongly recommend splitting this entry. First, [notes] have limited effect for many end-users, unfortunately, in correcting kanji forms. But more importantly, I don't think 辛気 actually overlaps [1], or even vise-versa, except as orthographic mistakes. Compare, for example, the ngrams for 辛気臭(くさ)い (25,000+) and 心気臭(くさ)い(~100). I think this would be better handled, if at all, as [sk] entries("spelling errors"). [2] appears to me to be predominantly as 辛気くさい, so I think the xref is appropriate. |

Comments: | Yes, GG5 and Meikyo have combined entries, and 中辞典 splits. The two JEs assign senses to 柔道, but they do them different ways round! We have a single entry for 押さえ/抑え so merging will be consistent. I'll set up a merge in the 押さえ込む entry and see if others agree. |
|
2. | A* 2024-01-28 17:41:33 Peter <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I think this should be combined with the entry 押さえ込む, but I don't know the right way to do that. GG5 lists both 抑え込む and 押さえ込む under a single entry. Daijisen lists only 押さえ込む, with no entry for 抑え込む at all. If we do retain separate entries, I think the definition for this one should be enlarged, because I don't think it is specific to the sporting context the current definition implies. For instance this blog post https://www.lifehacker.jp/article/why-under-sharing-is-just-as-bad-as-oversharing/ has a title 感情を抑え込むリスクとその解決策 and the jpdb.io entry for the word has a lot of examples from fiction where the thing being suppressed is one's own emotions. |

Comments: | I don't think this is a case of "better as an example sentence", but I know there may be disagreement. sankoku gives this as the sole example for 微動: [-だにしない]. It is also the first of two examples for the だに entry(the other is [思うだに悲しい], which is rare and has 0 ngrams). I saw this in a "sword in the stone" description. Many heroes tried to remove the sword, but it never even budged. I think "to budge" is a great gloss, but it would be weird to try and stick it as noun into the main 微動 entry("budging"?) *and* there would still be no clue there as to the importance of だに. If you search eijiro for だにせず, there are 6 collocations, 5 of them are with 微動. If you search だにしない, you'll also see 予想だに and 一顧だに. But this noun is perhaps the most-common common use of だに, which I'd never seen before this. 微動だにする with a [note] avoids the alternative of separate (or no) entries for: 微動だにせず 微動だにしない 微動だにしなかった ... and some other neg forms I found: 微動だにすることなく 184 微動だにできない 556 微動だにできず 256 微動だにできなかった 235 but I would rather see an entry with any of those than no entry at all. It looks like だに, which we mark (and kokugos mark) as [form/lit] is perhaps not actually either of those in this fixed expression. I'm going to pitch an xref here from だに. I would also suggest one from 微動 itself, as this is fully 50% of uses. Modeled a bit after 釈然とする and 飽きもせず entries. Maybe wishful thinking to propose this, but I believe this is useful on several levels. |
