No swooning... https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/昏倒 "slipped into a coma" Another FinalFantasy "swooning" commentary Swooning... https://legendsoflocalization.com/final-fantasy-iv/mysidia/ When an enemy is insta-killed using this sword, it says, “Swoon!” in English. This always struck me as odd until I got older and my vocabulary expanded. https://kwhazit.ucoz.net/trans/ff4/status.html I think the awkward "swoon" naming may have less to do with NoA's infamous content policies and more to do with struggling to find something in English that's both brief and reasonably true to せんとうふのう, which quite literally translates to "incapable of combat". |
|
Comments: | Maybe "passing out". Usually a verb. Surely "swoon" is dated in this sense. Not sure if keeping "swooning" is helpful to anyone. Context I saw this: 昏倒させる = poisoned arrows knocking someone out/unconscious In the late 80s/early 90s, Final Fantasy had a comical translation of "swooning" which they wisely dropped in future games. I'm apparently not the only one with this memory (refs). |

Comments: | Perhaps also/instead: "to dream of becoming". I've seen this a couple of times now as [profession]に憧れていた. If I just google "に憧れ" I get hits like: 私の息子は獣医に憧れている and this: 「私は弁護士に憧れて、法学部に入りました。」 None of the current glosses seem to handle this. We could squeeze the senses into [1], but they are at odds with other, and both [1] and [2] are possible for the same structure depending on context. Eijiro currently has, for example: スターに憧れる star-struck But I'll bet "I wanted to be a movie star" is also possible. Giving two senses makes it explicit that this ambiguity exists. My most recent sighting: お前は冒険者なのか。俺もずっと昔、冒険者に憧れていた。-> "I used to dream of being an adventurer too". Other(better) translation: You're an adventurer? I wanted to be one a long time ago. |

Comments: | Is this really [derog]? The glosses give the strong impression that this term is limited to small groups of people, but that doesn't seem to be the case. My current show is using it regularly for towns, and even entire countries of people. The number one reverso gloss is "people". This is cambridge's gloss (along with folks). I agree with "guys", but I think "these guys" "those guys", and other formulations could work. And I think the "those" is likely to appear explicitly when appropriate, such as: あの連中 15844 <-- those guys (in some contexts) この連中 26669 <-- these guys (in some contexts) With regards to larger groups of people: あの国の連中 168 この国の連中 275 この街の連中 111 この町の連中 192 Outside of "people", and maybe "folks", I don't think any of the previous glosses can work with あの国の... There's nothing even mildly derogatory about the way I'm currently seeing it. sankoku says なかまの人々. [軽く見て言うことが多い]. Maybe it's derogatory in some contexts though, I couldn't say. |

Subtitled with katakana ナメ, consistent with the discussion that forked this entry off of 舐める. Having "to underestimate" under [1] at the end of a long list has a couple of shortcomings: 1. This particular list really looks like it is trying to apply to people 2. At the end of the list, "underestimate" looks like a context-dependent niche possibility, rather than a primary sense. No one is talking about "looking down on", "making fun of", "putting down" or "mistreating" a mountain, I don't think.(refs) |

Comments: | I don't think this is a case of "better as an example sentence", but I know there may be disagreement. sankoku gives this as the sole example for 微動: [-だにしない]. It is also the first of two examples for the だに entry(the other is [思うだに悲しい], which is rare and has 0 ngrams). I saw this in a "sword in the stone" description. Many heroes tried to remove the sword, but it never even budged. I think "to budge" is a great gloss, but it would be weird to try and stick it as noun into the main 微動 entry("budging"?) *and* there would still be no clue there as to the importance of だに. If you search eijiro for だにせず, there are 6 collocations, 5 of them are with 微動. If you search だにしない, you'll also see 予想だに and 一顧だに. But this noun is perhaps the most-common common use of だに, which I'd never seen before this. 微動だにする with a [note] avoids the alternative of separate (or no) entries for: 微動だにせず 微動だにしない 微動だにしなかった ... and some other neg forms I found: 微動だにすることなく 184 微動だにできない 556 微動だにできず 256 微動だにできなかった 235 but I would rather see an entry with any of those than no entry at all. It looks like だに, which we mark (and kokugos mark) as [form/lit] is perhaps not actually either of those in this fixed expression. I'm going to pitch an xref here from だに. I would also suggest one from 微動 itself, as this is fully 50% of uses. Modeled a bit after 釈然とする and 飽きもせず entries. Maybe wishful thinking to propose this, but I believe this is useful on several levels. |

Comments: | Very good explanation here, including someone clearly confused by the current entry in jmdict for 男手: It means "Major who raised Benio with his own (male) help", right? https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/94992/what-does-男手一つで育てる-literally-mean (long, thorough explanation at link, including a translation:) The army major who raised 紅緒 as a single dad The entry for 女手 provides no help on this point, and this seems to be the principal modern usage of this term(女手). I'd be perfectly happy to have the full entry: 女手ひとつで育てる but we don't seem to usually do this. (lots of things can be stuck between で and some form of 育てる, but it almost always gets there in the end.) There aren't many things that seem to follow this besides 頑張る and perhaps 苦労. Does not have to be a literal mother, and doesn't have to be an adult. In the context I encountered this, it was an older brother after their parents died. (Using 男手ひとつで). The only reason to say "on one's own" and not "on her own" is that it can be used in the first person. "I raised my little brother on my own"(the precise example I encountered). The choice of 男手 and 女手 then depends on the gender of the speaker. |

Comments: | Most comments at parallel proposal for 女手ひとつで Not as common for men as for women (either in absolute terms, or as a percentage of the base noun 男手/女手), but this particular structure is still principally about parenting. Search google news (or anything else) and you'll get lots of confirmation: "男手一つ" As an example, here was the first news headline that came up: 喜界島、双子バッテリー「勝ちたかった」全力2時間7分、亡き母に感謝 男手一つ父感慨/鹿児島 https://www.nikkansports.com/baseball/highschool/news/202307060000063.html How to make sense of that... what's a 男手一つ父? (answer = single father after mom died). (男手一つ父 = 0 ngrams) Even more abbreviated: https://hochi.news/articles/20230509-OHT1T51206.html?page=1 【巨人】門脇誠の父寿光さん、猛打&1号に感激 3歳から男手一つ「365日あっという間でした」 3歳から男手一つ = (single father since his son was 3) "で" seems not strictly necessary, but it seems to me more like "男手一つで" is the original structure ("男手一つで育てえる") and the expression is so common that で can sometimes be omitted to make a noun. But a [n] entry of 男手一つ for "single father" seems like it would have more problems to me... |
