|
Comments: | My current anime translates as "mage", and that seems like a useful fit to me. eijiro marks as "dated"〈古〉, but that seems a bit silly as "mage" is quite common in the English genres where this term might be used. (role playing games, historical fantasy, etc.) The fact that it's used in a recently produced/translated anime kind of makes that point for me (Frieren). I believe "mage" was a character class way back in Final Fantasy I for the NES in the late 80s. I'd also note in favor of this term, none of the other terms here would work particularly well as a substitute in this scenario. magician has modern slight-of-hand connotations. Wizards are men, witches are women, and sorcerer's are a bit too over-the-top powerful in a society with a lot of general "everyday" magic. |

(pointing towards well-dressed men)人の偉いさは分かりづらい、だからああやって見た目で分かるようにするんだ。 trans: It's hard to tell which humans are important. So they dress themselves up to make it obvious. My own intuition is to adds something like "difficult to discern/recognize" but I haven't found particular support for that. "hard to tell" strikes me as the right sense, but doesn't quite map directly from : nounは分かりづらい. You can't say "importance is hard to tell" or "hard-to-tell importance". You have to transform it into "it's hard to tell how important".... eijiro has "confusing" in one context. There's one reverso example of "puzzling". I like both, but neither of these works for my specific example though, and it doesn't seem like an unusual use-case to me. Hmm, google translates in isolation as "Confusing" You might have some better ideas. |

Comments: | Reorder kanji forms. Removing the xref to the less-common form. Also, imidas has this form, but not the other. I'm suggesting a different xref to 天秤にかける[1], as it helps elucidate the meaning here, even though 天秤にかける[2] *is* this sense (and imidas also supports this). The xref is certainly more common in aggregate, but I don't know how often it is sense [1] vs. [2]. (Usually I think "to try to have it both ways" has a nuance of failure. It's not clear to me that this is the case in Japanese ) I suggest removing "to try to sit on two stools". Made me wonder if 天秤 was stool-related. It is not. This seems like quite an odd English idiom to me, google turns up very little (if you search in quotes). In fact, apparently a french quote: https://quotefancy.com/quote/1376384/Fran-ois-Rabelais-One-falls-to-the-ground-in-trying-to-sit-on-two-stools Doesn't seem to have much traction. Even "sit on two stools" returns zero real news matches (there is one example where a couple are sitting on two stools, one each). Twitter gives 4 hits, and they are all: "Having to sit on two stools because your butt can't fit on one." I'm going to be proactive and remove this. If it exists at all, it's way less common than the Japanese structure. It seems like a disservice to suggest that anyone should use it as a translation, and I don't think it offers much in understanding the Japanese. |

Comments: | I think this is one of those cases where an explanation is better than a translation. Wiktionary simply has "used to intensify a verb". Daijr says "名詞や形容詞の語幹に付いて" but its examples use verb stems. I wonder if "形容詞" is an error. I don't think I've ever seen ガン used with adjectives (unless you include ガングロ). [sl] might be more appropriate than [col]. The 3rd edition of daijr describes ガン- terms as 若者語. (I don't have the 4th ed.) |
