Comments: | In spite of having removed it myself, I've now seen a couple sources say that the "resign oneself to one's fate" is possible. Also searching 覚悟 + 諦め says there is a relationship there (also in the kokugos), but much to my surprise, 諦め is more strongly "accepting fate" than I expected. (and less, throwing in the towel because something is difficult). Apparently the initial meaning was from Buddhism, and this is given explicitly in daijs. Sankoku has simplified things way down from daijs 5 entries, and there seems to me to be quite a gap in the definitions there. sankoku[1] says nothing about buddhism, but seems to parallel the Buddhism sense. This seems rare by comparison in the wild (having googled usages for about an hour now). sankoku [2] is the combination of "decide" and "prepare" contained withing 心構え and 決心. This seems to me to match daijs[1], without the expansive treatise on danger... "Resignation" or something fate-related probably belongs. But I don't think it should all be in one gloss, and I think the kokugo divisions back that up. |

Comments: | Perhaps move "resolve" higher on the list than I have? Frieren(anime). 覚悟 comes up a lot, including 覚悟を決める, and it is always translated as "resolve". From my limited reading on this term, this seems to be a particularly apt translation. "resignation" seems off-the-mark. We currently have a translation for 覚悟を決める as "to prepare(for the worst)", which would align with "resignation", but I think this translation is also off. Japanese references give a description of something like "accepting the danger ahead and deciding to move forward", which is where this interpretation might have come from. But it looks like 覚悟 and 覚悟を決める generally have positive connotations "to decide to move forward in spite of the dangers or challenges". I'd honestly put "resolve" higher on the list, but I haven't researched this term so extensively as to make such a claim. eijiro has nothing like "resignation" in an extensive list of collocations. So if you don't have support to keep it, I'd recommend dropping. |

Refs: | daijs has no entry at all for 心気 daijs: 辛気臭い, entry, kanji for is: 辛気(臭い) (i.e くさい kanji optional). daijs has an entry with two senses for 辛気 with two senses, and 辛気臭い is given as an extra headword within that. Both, as noted earlier, are marked as dialects (we have marked 辛気臭い as kansai-ben). Both senses appear to me to be variants of [2]: [1] (もと関西方言)気がくさくさして、めいるようすだ。

Comments: | Strongly recommend splitting this entry. First, [notes] have limited effect for many end-users, unfortunately, in correcting kanji forms. But more importantly, I don't think 辛気 actually overlaps [1], or even vise-versa, except as orthographic mistakes. Compare, for example, the ngrams for 辛気臭(くさ)い (25,000+) and 心気臭(くさ)い(~100). I think this would be better handled, if at all, as [sk] entries("spelling errors"). [2] appears to me to be predominantly as 辛気くさい, so I think the xref is appropriate. |

Sankoku is a bit of an outlier associating まとも with 真正面; none of my regular JEs or kokugos do it - they all have ましょうめん alone. Of course we have 真正面/ましょうめん as an entry (1364060); I wouldn't have proposed hiding it in this entry otherwise. |

|
Comments: | I encountered this as [1](example below). More comments at the main 心気 entry. I think 心気 is clearly its own thing by the ngrams(18376), and by the counts given for 心気くさい(~100), I think this kanji is best hidden under [sK] as a spelling error. sankoku splits the senses [1] and [2]. I sometimes see these entries were very unrelated glosses are sitting next to each other to avoid splitting senses... In the context I saw this was distinctly nothing to do with annoyance or irritation. I'm not sure how to interpret sankoku's dialect notes. Note that they are different for [1] and [2]. The もと in (もと関西方言) suggests to me that this *was* kansai-ben, but is now more generally recognized? Do we note this("formerly kansaiben?") [2] is still recorded as a strictly regional dialect, but is more broad than kansaiben. (関西・中部・中国方言) The use I encountered was by a young, brash, anime warrior-type character, and I know these figures often get "rough" dialects assigned to them, but I'm not an expert on that. Frieren: 俺がこの村に来たとき、みんな辛気くさい顔して、竜の恐怖におびえていた。そんな連中がさ、今で幸せそう笑っているんだよ When I arrived here, all of the villagers wore grim expressions and lived in fear of the dragon. Now those people are smiling happily ==== I swapped kanji ordering purely on the ngrams where the kanji form has a 3-1 lead, though くさい was written in kanji where I encountered it. |
