Firstly, gonna need some lsrc splits.

For the television term, only one ref uses "season". Cours and seasons are not equivalent, and there can be multiple cours in a season. Perhaps the gloss can be modified as "thirteen-week (three-month) run of a series". The refs are consistent about the duration.

The anonymous contributor seems to be more interested in admonishing us than communicating clearly. I assume the point being made is that the counts for デスパレート were artificially inflated in 2007 by the name of the TV show.

Judging by the results on twitter, the two forms might be equally common. I wouldn't mind dropping the [rk] tag.

I think both x-refs are needed. ピットアウト is the antonym. ピットストップ should be a bidirectional reference, as ピットイン is both 1/2 of the pit stop, and an alias for the entire pit stop, depending on context. But ピットストップ itself is a perfectly fine gloss for "pit stop", based on the n-gram counts.

Not sure either is a metaphor. The kokugos don't seem to have these in the same sense of 浮く.
I suspect the use of 気障 (きざ) is just indicating what puts one's teeth on edge.

I must point out that this entry is very confusing to a non-native speaker of English, because it is not clear which of these tooth-related glosses is a metaphor and which is literal. Would there be a non-tooth-related gloss available somewhere?

Also worth pointing out that there is the word きざ appearing in most Japanese definitions which is not apparent in this entry.

Both GG5 and 中辞典 include "queer" among the glosses for 変. While I am sad that terms such as "gay" and "queer" have become so strongly associated with their modern meanings that it is risky or misleading to use them in their original contexts, I guess this is just part of the evolution of language. I think the remaining 9 glosses for our sense #1 get the message across, and there's no real reason for retaining "queer", although, IMNSHO, it is quite correct.
6. A* 2024-01-11 09:29:00  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
That's a good point penname01. I didn't mean to imply that the word doesn't have a valid use, or that it is inherently offensive, or that it is strictly synonymous for "homosexual". I was lazy in giving some references just to back up the assertion that "this is no longer a generic synonym for strange/unusual", and there may be some risks to tossing it around if you don't understand it.

I think I added 奇妙 to my flashcard deck in 2019, pasting in "strange; queer; curious" from the glosses. Literally every time I've seen it since, I do a double-take on the English. The use of "queer" in this way is itself so striking, for me it seems to attach a nuance to 奇妙 for me that I don't think actually exists in the Japanese term.

just a little correction, "queer" doesn't mean "homosexual" and it's not always offensive or dated (the Q in LGBTQ stands for queer). it was used this way originally, but lately it just means someone not straight/cisgender. the japanese wikipedia page agrees

The word "queer" isn't used much. It has two meanings, but it isn't used much for either meaning.

When you say something is queer, it means that it is strange, odd, peculiar. This meaning of "queer" is dated and is rarely used in America. It's used sometimes in the UK, but not much.

When you say a person is queer, it means that person is gay or homosexual. This usage is offensive, so it isn't used much with this meaning either.

  Comments:
I mean this as a serious question. Is it time to drop "queer" from (at least most of) our "strange"/"odd" glosses? I actually ran into "queer" on 奇妙, but 変 is a term with 10 other options, so it feels less impactful to drop it here, so this is where I pose the question....

"queer" it currently attached to 18 entries(+1 for クィア=homosexual), which seems excessive to me. I would call this "dated" at best in English, and we don't usually give dated English glosses unless the Japanese term itself is dated. I've included Eijiro's example "queer" sentences in the refs. I can't imagine either producing, or hearing anyone produce either of those sentences. I know perfectly well what they mean, but I wouldn't expect to see this usage outside of pretty-old or historical-themed literature.

Longman gives a gloss for "queer" of 変 or 奇妙 if you search E->J, but marks the English やや古い. If you search in J-E for 変 or 奇妙, queer is *not* offered as an English gloss.

reverso has 3000+ examples of 変・へん. When I ask it for "queer", first I get a popup: "Possibly Inappropriate Content. Unlock?".
When I follow through, there is *one* example sentence. There are 600+ translations as "strange", for comparison.

I'm not trying to be aggressive in posing this question, but I wonder who is benefiting from having "queer" on this list? In what modern contexts should someone translate 変 as queer? And is that something a competent translator could do on their own if they really wanted to inject a particular synonym of "strange/odd/peculiar/etc." for historical flavor?

We've mostly dropped "gay" for "happy". I think this one should probably go as well. I don't think it's very useful for natives anymore, and I think it contributes to non-natives inadvertently using sensitive vocabulary.

Unless there is a particular argument for keeping it associated with a particular Japanese term, I'd honestly just run through and strip it everywhere. The fact that Longman doesn't even keep it for 奇妙 seems telling to me.

i think that the technically "correct" pronunciation こうらん is pretty much exclusively associated with 攪乱
judging from audio sources like youglish or immersion kit (and online articles) かくらん is by far the more popular reading and it seems to me helpful to redirect people there by making こうらん rare
but you're right that it's probably best to stick with what the refs say

撹 is an itaiji of 攪. Any reading which applies to one will apply to the other.

こうらん is in all the smaller kokugos and not all of them redirect to かくらん. I don't think we can call it rare.

Japan is notably not included among those countries. This is a dictionary entry for defining the word 食玩 as it is used in Japanese. The proposed edit would be more appropriate for an English-language encyclopedia.

  Comments:
English Wiki claims this is かかと蹴り, but the descriptions for axe kick and かかと落とし match up.
かかと落とし also gets far more hits than かかと蹴り, and Google images for かかと落とし seem to uniformly be for a kick where the heel is brought straight down, whereas かかと蹴り image results are all over the place.

Thanks for the heads up on フォロワー/フォロ
ー. I get your gripe, but I don't think
this is just specific to twitter (I get
hits for Instagram too). It's also
potentially useful both for translators
and Japanese users who are looking for a
way to express this in English.

It's also extremely common (I looked again
just now and saw 10 tweets the past 10
minutes) and even if it were twitter-
specific (like some of my other entry
suggestions might jave been) it's not like
twitter is some small random site only
used by the dedicated few.

The "ブランドが持つ中心的な価値のこと" definition given by ブランド用語集 (Nicolas's Kotobank link) is a different sense. I'm not sure "core value" works as a gloss here but I'm struggling to think of something better.

  Comments:
Was looking for a good way to describe short-stops on a cross-country trip and encountered this on reverso. Maybe some Japanese people might borrow the north american usage for this, but not sure it needs to be called out.

する usage, if present, seems at least far-less common than for ピットイン, which is listed as vs.

Note... wikipedia seems to indicate that ピットイン is just 1/2 of a ピットストップ, closed by a ピットアウト.
本コースからピットエリアに入ることをピットイン、ピットエリアから本コースに合流することをピットアウトと言う。

We are currently missing a gloss for ピットアウト. I suspect, given the ngrams, that since ピットイン signals the beginning of a pitstop (and the "stopping" part specifically), it has taken over for ピットストップ in many places...
