Refs: | daijr, meikyo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shallot Until 2010, the (French red) shallot was classified as a separate species, Allium ascalonicum. The taxon was synonymized with Allium cepa (the common onion) in 2010, as the difference was too small to justify a separate species. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ラッキョウ#特徴 軟白栽培して早採りしたラッキョウを葉つきのまま出荷しているものは、「エシャレット」あるいは「エシャロット」として流通している。日本では、エシャロットの呼称に混乱が見られ、生食用に軟白栽培されたラッキョウ (Allium chinense) が「エシャロット」の名で流通したり、「エシャレット」の商品名で販売されていることが多い。 https://delishkitchen.tv/articles/2319 |

Comments: | Personally, I don't have any problem with recording weird gikun data like this. I think JMdict has some structural quirks that make them difficult to merge, though. If we added 運命 to the entry for 定め, we wouldn't be able to use the [gikun] tag on the reading because that tag is only true for 運命, not 定め. We'd also have to add some sense restrictions. It would be a little messy. Since this entry, うんめい【運命】, only has one sense and one kanji form, and the sense happens to be the correct meaning for さだめ【運命】, we can add that gikun reading cleanly. Not every situation is as clean as this one, though. |
|

Comments: | Sorry to comment late on an approved/closed entry, I'm happy with the result. Just to reply to Stephen on-record in case the discussion ever comes up again: It's not so much that 運命 might be randomly pronounced さだめ when reading(I agree, it wouldn't without furigana). Rather, it's the other way around: if you want to *write* さだめ in kanji, there are two commonly-recognized kanji orthographies: 1. 定め 2. 運命+furigana. (the latter less common, of course). This is why I mentioned the alternative of adding 運命 to the さだめ entry instead. But I know this isn't how jmdict is usually used(J->E translation/decipherment). Whether さだめ is here, or 運命 is in the other entry, there is probably not much practical impact. |

Refs: | Sankoku also records gikun forms like そら【宇宙】. You do see things like this a lot in popular media, especially song lyrics. I wouldn't think anyone would read the word this way without furigana, though. It's marked as a 熟字訓 in sankoku, so I think we'd be correct to use the [gikun] tag. |

Comments: | I think Brian makes a good case for さだめ being visibly associated with 運命, and an [ik] tag is probably the best approach. I guess [gikun] is an alternative. |

Comments: | It's hard to find an informative source on this word. A lot of hits come up when you search "レッツラゴー 死語", and the most common etymology traces it back to a pun on the title of the 70s manga レッツラゴン, so it's probably safe to say it's from the 1970s. |

Refs: | "状況下" always follows an adjectival clause (〜の, 〜な, 〜的, verb, noun acting prenominally, etc.) |
|
Comments: | This seems to be more of a grammar point than a stand-alone expression. I think we'd need to gloss it like this. I agree with Robin that this makes for an awkward entry. |

Comments: | my point was you'd break down "困難な状況下" -> "困難な" + "状況下", not "困難な状況" + "下" wiktionary also includes it as an entry and so does weblio thesaurus i'm obviously not saying all weblio thesaurus entries should be included in jmdict, i shared the link to show how it's clear that "状況下" is its own thing, not just "(specific content)状況" + "下" |

Comments: | "not used on its own" is what I meant to say. I'm not sure what those links are supposed to show. The Wiktionary example is "非常に寒い状況下で車を洗車することになった". The Weblio thesaurus simply lists 状況下 alongside other synonyms (状況下で, 状況の下, 状況に置かれて, 状況において). None of those expressions would be suitable as entries. |

Comments: | I don't think that contradicts anything I said. "この" in that sentence is just a substitute for the entire previous sentence. We have "この" tagged as "pre-noun adjectival (rentaishi)" in JMdict. The point is that you wouldn't start that sentence with just "状況下" by itself. It would need to be "この状況下," "ある状況下," "ニュースが大量に流れてくる状況下," etc. |

Comments: | I think because we don't want to spend time arguing over which JMnedict entries deserve the [spec1] tag, we're just apply the tag to all entries with the [product] tag, [company] tag, etc. This word (from 2012) is too new to be reflected in the n-gram counts (from 2007). Both JA and EN wikis have an article for it. I'd say that is enough of a reason to include this entry in the JMdict file. |
|
7. | A* 2024-01-03 14:14:02 | |
Comments: | not the commenter, but I read the commenter's question as: why does this deserve spec1? why is this common enough to be included in jmdict? same thing for 5746459.2, 5000045.2 |
