Refs: | daijs: 超自然的な霊威や呪力をもつとされて神聖視される物。 wiki: A fetish is an object believed to have supernatural powers, or in particular, a human-made object that has power over others. collins (fetish): something, esp an inanimate object, that is believed in certain cultures to be the embodiment or habitation of a spirit or magical powers |
|
Comments: | Thank you for your contribution. The formatting is fine. This doesn't look like a separate sense to me. Daijs' entry describes a fetish. And it seems that the 呪物 in Jujutsu Kaisen are fetishes that happen to be cursed. Probably worth adding a short definition to distinguish it from the sexual meaning. |

Comments: | As this is a first edit, I am not fully sure of the syntax/formatting needed (even after reading the quick overview). However, I have added three (of many) sites that define the word as a cursed item/object, seperately from the original definition of fetish. Please let me know if there is anything else necessary, or how to improve edits in the future if I attempt to do so again. Additionally, while the first two sources are moreso dictionary style pages, the third source is from an anime/manga wiki that provides context on the word as written in official fanbook material. (Source 1). Thank you! |

|
Comments: | We have a tatoeba sentence attached to [1] that maybe(?) belongs to [2]: "They bribed the witness into silence." daijs seems to suggest a 3rd meaning, close to "to seal off a building" (ie. "to lock down"). It's harder to find concrete examples of this in the wild. [1] can be "a letter", "a package", "an envelope", etc. so I added "e.g.". Note: 封ずる should be kept identical for both senses. (I'm not going to bother with 口を封ずる, but that is also legitimate. Maybe it should be done...) |

Comments: | I was going to let this be, but since Stephen brought up the other meaning, I figured it was worth adding a "useful" gloss. "to enfeoff" now holds the record for most-obscure-English I've learned here. Maybe you'll have better wording. I think technically "to enfeoff" is not as specific as this term, but I did find "enfeoff" in English-language treatments of historical Japan. Needs to be matched with the corresponding 封ずる entry when complete. |

Comments: | Usage: ~の口を封じる。eijiro and wordreference both have it for "to muzzle". A useful E->J entry for certain. We have an example sentence attached to 封じる that uses this. I would argue that 動きを封じる, while more common, is a straightforward application of 封じる[2], while the use of 口 is more idiomatic and has more interesting English glosses. We have many verbal 口を idiomatic expressions, this would be in good company. |
