If I'm not mistaken, 三拝九拝 is literally "three bows and nine bows." Jitenon also offers the other interpretations that I described in a previous edit.

>> That's precisely my point. lit glosses are supposed to be literal translations *of the Japanese*

No.
"lit gloss"es are supposed to be literal translations.
There is no good reason to insist, that it must specifically be from Japanese. I do not, for the life of me, understand why you insist that it must be.

>> "the weak are meat the strong do eat" doesn’t even agree with 弱肉強食's part of speech.

Not entirely, no, but it's about as close as you can get, to a literal translation. (there is, pretty much, no such thing as a perfect translation. Regardless of translation type)

What you're defining as "literal translation", is not really literal translation.
It is...
I'd like to say glosses, but given how that word is used here...
I tried looking up a more specific term for it, and found this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlinear_gloss
("interlinear" would seems to make it needlessly narrow, but what is described in the article perfectly reflects what I'm referring to)
...which is very different, to the concept of literal translation.

Essentially, what you are talking about, are glosses, in the proper sense of the word.
The use of "gloss", in JMDict, is not, I'd argue, strictly accurate, though I suppose it could be argued to be a wider sense of the word.
Glosses (in the narrower sense) are not translations nor definitions.
Those three are very different, though clearly related (when describing things, between languages), concepts.

>> It's not consistent with how we use lit glosses on all non-yoji entries.

Yes it is.
Just _claiming_ that they are not consistent, not/less useful, or in any other way worse, isn't evidence that they are.
You need to present some argument/evidence.

>> The same goes for translations of the component characters.

It is completely unclear, what that is supposed to mean.

>> I don't think a gloss like "one time, one meeting" is useful.

I absolutely think it is, and think that it is as useful, as any other literal translation, in JMDict.
How/why do you think that it isn't?

Nothing like Stephen Kraus' argument, was stated before, so the re-addition of the lit gloss, was still perfectly justified.
Stephen Kraus' argument is a decent argument against a lit gloss, in this instance.

I'd argue, however, that the only gloss that isn't that dissimilar to a literal gloss, is the last one.
The "the weak become the victim of the strong" one
...and I don't think that one, is really all that accurate. (it's meaning is too specific/strict/narrow, to describe the meaning of the idiom. It's closer to the literal meaning, which is more narrow, but...)
It seems more like a very contrived attempt at a gloss that is similar to the literal meaning.

Thus, it is better to just remove it.
...which leaves a situation, where a lit gloss would seem to be fully justified, by Stephen Kraus' standard.

I agree with the split.
We consider a kanji form "rare" if its n-gram count is <3% of the total (i.e. the counts of all surface forms summed together). rK for 集録 and 輯録 would have been correct had they stayed on this entry.
We use sK for kyujitai that aren't commonly used. Again, the threshold is 3%.

  Comments:
splitting out 集録[rK];輯録[rK]

1. i don't think there's anything "rare" about these headwords. 集録 = 37000 ngrams; 輯録 = 1000 ngrams

2. no dictionary merges, based on the apparent distinction that 集録 means to compile various writings into a single document, whereas 収録 simply means to record something in a document (or film/audiotape, etc.). of course it is possible that something is recorded in a compilation, but 集録 necessarily refers to a compilation, whereas 収録 doesn't.

收+錄 are both kyuji and 收錄 gets only 356 ngrams. should this be sK? oK? i'm not really sure of the difference.

https://www.tokyoprojuku.com/2019/01/18/絶賛/ 本来、「絶賛」という言葉の意味は、「この上なくほめること」「賛美すること」(広辞苑より)。
「絶賛、○○中~」は、「只今、真っ最中」という意味を伝えるために使っているわけですが、本来の意味からすると、この使い方は相応しいとはいえないということになるのですね。
  Comments:
Came across "絶賛勉強中". It seems the 絶賛 is just adding intensity here. Sense 1 doesn't help at all in understanding this example.

'The sangenpai 「三元牌」 (lit. three foundation tiles) are three tiles, originally representing the three Confucian values. These tiles are quite distinctive, often brightly coloured. In English, they are most often referred to as the dragons, but occasionally they are referred to as the colours.'
  Comments:
"dragon tiles" by itself doesn't indicate that there are only three types of tiles. I think it's helpful to address the "三" in "三元牌" at least implicitly by adding cross references.

Naming these tiles "dragons" is an entirely English-speaking / western phenomenon, so I'm not satisfied with the single gloss by itself. I think adding cross references is the easiest way to supplement it. In Japanese there actually does exist unrelated terminology derived from the word "dragon" (ドラ牌) which adds to the confusion.

Every Japanese definition for 「三元牌」 begins by listing the tiles.

No need to explain what tanyao is in this entry.

Despite what the first reference says, the Japanese sources say that "Kuitan" doesn't necessarily refer to the rule itself. The rules are either 喰断アリ or 喰断ナシ, and the former is sometimes abbreviated as 喰断.

I wasn't familiar with this use of the word but after reading various online discussions about it, my impression is that it's not used by children at all. I think we should indicate this in some way or another if we're tagging it as children's language. Maybe something simple like "used by parents, guardians, etc."

I think [chn] should include words used by adults when speaking to children. I mean kids only say あんよ etc. because that's what their parents use those words with them. I'm sure some toddlers pick up on this to some extent too. I don't really think the note is necessary.

Sense 2 is quite tricky to explain. I don't think children use the word in this way. Is [chn] still applicable here?

I still think there's an anomaly in having this and 両/りゃん as different entries. In the case of 三/さん/サン at least サン is a recognized 音読み. That's not the case with りゃん/リャン.

I agree with Stephen's reasoning.
6. A* 2023-09-18 17:05:08  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Just want to note quickly that this is the same reasoning discussed in the notes for entry 1461140・二【に】, which is why we have two entries for 三 despite sharing the same pronunciations.
  1579350・三【さん】
  2747950・三【サン】 [lsrc=chi:sān]

I'm also not sure if 両 should be the leading form in this entry since the vast majority of usages and words using this number seem to represent it as 二 or 2. I only see 両 used in 両面【リャンメン】 and 両嵌【リャンカン】. I moved 両 to the first position because it seemed more "correct" based upon usage in modern standard Chinese, but now I'm thinking that is probably not relevant.

> In 2832843 you mentioned moving the mahjong sense to its own entry, but this doesn't mention it.

I wrote mahjong in scare quotes but I didn't state my point explicitly. It's not clear to me that this sense is specific to mahjong and requires a field tag. None of the other Chinese numeral entries listed in my notes below are tagged this way, although they are all (with the exception of 二【アル】) used just as frequently in mahjong vocabulary as 二【リャン】.

It seems these Chinese numerals (including this entry) may appear in Japanese in contexts other than mahjong. None of their respective kokugo entries mention mahjong. Also, the reference notes in entry 2728160 二 (アル) refer to Chinese restaurant words listed on Wikipedia.
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/餃子の王将#王将用語
Notably, Wikipedia lists リャン as the reading for 二 in this restaurant context rather than アル.

> Without it the split is very odd. I'd be happier if they could be kept in the one entry.

Entry 2832843・両【りゃん】 is described in the refs (daijr/s, koj, nikk) as 唐宋音. None of those refs describe the word as 中国語, unlike all of their other Chinese numeral entries. So I don't think we would write the reading in katakana or add a [lsrc] note in that entry. I think this is enough to require a separate entry.

We also need to handle the 二 kanji form (which may actually be more common than 両 for this word). I thought it would be awkward at best to shoehorn it in there.
