I think [lit] glosses probably only make sense when they're substantially different from the others. I.e. when an idiomatic expression means something completely different on its face from its idiomatic meaning, and when such a difference requires some supplemental explanation for the reader.

>> That's precisely my point. lit glosses are supposed to be literal translations *of the Japanese*

No.
"lit gloss"es are supposed to be literal translations.
There is no good reason to insist, that it must specifically be from Japanese. I do not, for the life of me, understand why you insist that it must be.

>> "the weak are meat the strong do eat" doesn’t even agree with 弱肉強食's part of speech.

Not entirely, no, but it's about as close as you can get, to a literal translation. (there is, pretty much, no such thing as a perfect translation. Regardless of translation type)

What you're defining as "literal translation", is not really literal translation.
It is...
I'd like to say glosses, but given how that word is used here...
I tried looking up a more specific term for it, and found this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlinear_gloss
("interlinear" would seems to make it needlessly narrow, but what is described in the article perfectly reflects what I'm referring to)
...which is very different, to the concept of literal translation.

Essentially, what you are talking about, are glosses, in the proper sense of the word.
The use of "gloss", in JMDict, is not, I'd argue, strictly accurate, though I suppose it could be argued to be a wider sense of the word.
Glosses (in the narrower sense) are not translations nor definitions.
Those three are very different, though clearly related (when describing things, between languages), concepts.

>> It's not consistent with how we use lit glosses on all non-yoji entries.

Yes it is.
Just _claiming_ that they are not consistent, not/less useful, or in any other way worse, isn't evidence that they are.
You need to present some argument/evidence.

>> The same goes for translations of the component characters.

It is completely unclear, what that is supposed to mean.

>> I don't think a gloss like "one time, one meeting" is useful.

I absolutely think it is, and think that it is as useful, as any other literal translation, in JMDict.
How/why do you think that it isn't?

  Comments:
Nothing like Stephen Kraus' argument, was stated before, so the re-addition of the lit gloss, was still perfectly justified.
Stephen Kraus' argument is a decent argument against a lit gloss, in this instance.

I'd argue, however, that the only gloss that isn't that dissimilar to a literal gloss, is the last one.
The "the weak become the victim of the strong" one
...and I don't think that one, is really all that accurate. (it's meaning is too specific/strict/narrow, to describe the meaning of the idiom. It's closer to the literal meaning, which is more narrow, but...)
It seems more like a very contrived attempt at a gloss that is similar to the literal meaning.

Thus, it is better to just remove it.
...which leaves a situation, where a lit gloss would seem to be fully justified, by Stephen Kraus' standard.

I wasn't a fan of "feticide" here(we don't have it on any other terms for abortion), but it seems like there may be some of that implication here. This is first-and-foremost a medical term, but it appears to be the one adopted by the Japanese legislature, and has a may have a rather stronger association with 堕胎罪. Four kinds codified under law are:
1.堕胎罪
2.同意堕胎罪
3.業務上堕胎罪
4.不同意堕胎罪

In any case, 中絶 or 妊娠中絶 are the more everyday terminology.

Oxford agrees with my intuition that "abortionist" is derogatory.

I'm not sure if 堕胎医 is supposed to be derogatory or not. I don't think so, but if so, this could be marked [derog] instead.

中絶医 is a much better term for this, and we don't have it (still not sure how everyday it is on the whole).

There is a book titled "堕胎医", and this is what comes up with a google search, not doctors. This term may be dated. (中絶 is generally more common than 堕胎 these days)

Could delete this entry as A+B. Doesn't seem to be a common term for this, yet the meaning is self-evident.

Brian, you don't need to post so many examples. If you come across a dubious use of adj-no, just remove it and leave a comment saying that the word doesn't appear to be adjectival. The editors will almost certainly agree. There are thousands of kango entries with adj-no tags that should be removed.

Should [adj-no] be dropped here?

Perhaps this is better left alone for practical reasons. But if "胎児" is literally "the child in the womb", is this [adj-no]? Just because we have "fetal" in English as an adjective. "fetus's heartbeat", "fetal heartbeat".

Compare: 幼児 (toddler, not [adj-no]). (I've taken the top 胎児の ngrams, and matched them with 幼児 in the refs). The potential usage seems almost identical.

There are also a number of nouns prefixed with 胎児, just as there are with 幼児. Here's one that got an adj. gloss: 幼児退行: infantile regression

I copy/pasted "adj" from the oxford entry, which had the the example "established and emerging artists". My own intuition was that "emerging" had a couple of grammatical interpretations, but that I would only actually use "emerging" in an [adj] context in English. For instance, in my purely [n] example, I wouldn't say "predict the emerging of new markets". (Though you could, and google returns some examples, though rare vs. emergence).

  Comments:
I don't think what GG5 has is wrong, but I think something has been missed.

No objection to keeping everything in this entry, but I can say that 胎動する's meaning in context was *very* difficult to interpret(and then have any confidence in) with the current glosses. That's why I put in so much effort. How do you make "signs of" a verb/adjective. Or "indications"?

"stirrings" is straightforward, but it seemed like the wrong word most of the time(in the する case at least, maybe alright as a noun).

For example, what would one do with the daijs example sentence:
独立の気運が胎動する

The daijs example was coincidentally also on wikipedia, on the rise of the Czech independence movement:
チェコ民族独立の気運が胎動する時代にあって、
(google glosses as "national independence was gaining momentum", but I'm also suspicious of google's handling of this term)

Here's one example from a 2021 gov. publication on steps towards carbon neutrality:
https://www.meti.go.jp/shingikai/energy_environment/carbon_neutral_jitsugen/pdf/20210825_2.pdf
3. カーボンニュートラルを目指し胎動する市場の力を活用すること。

I can't see how the previous glosses handle: 胎動する市場の力

And one more strictly-noun usage:
https://www.pentasecurity.co.jp/security_column/未来自動車の変化する5つの要素ー最終回/
新しいサービスによる新規市場の胎動を予測する一方で

In "胎動を予測する", I don't see what could be "predicted" besides "development" or "emergence" of new markets...

I'm not always sure what the goal of [form] is. 胎動[2] is probably readily understood, but I'm not sure it's a commonly spoken form(If you're familiar with it as such, I'll take your word for it). Where I've found it online, it's in news articles and research papers, not personal blog posts. (By this logic "emergence" in English might be [form], I'm not sure if that's the goal or not).

The (e.g.) is already trying to point at [hist], it seems.

Waffled on the xref. Could include "ダウントランス". Seems like 逓降変圧器 is either obsolete, or very niche (industrial?), and 降圧変圧器 is the usual kanji form. You can get from 降圧変圧器 to everything else if you keep following xrefs.

  Comments:
Some doubts about this entry. On a japanese learning site there is a user made definition that says "dose of medicine to be taken only once (when symptoms appear)" .
The addition of "(when symptoms appear)" is probably coming from 大辞典 which says ... 症状が現われるごとに服用させる ...
But the other dictionary I've checked are not so specific on that, for example 大辞泉: 対症療法として薬を何回にも分けずに一回に飲むこと。
対症療法 being "symptomatic therapy" would be a medicine you take to address some symptoms instead of the cause of an illness, like for example a painkiller - but it doesn't say anything about when you take it, maybe you endure the pain for one day and take it the day after, right?

Therefore I'm suggesting to either change this entry to "dose of medicine to be taken only once (to address symptoms instead of the root cause of an illness)" or adding that inside parenthesis as a note, whichever you guys think it's more fitting.

  Comments:
We currently have a term glossed "prenatal care" (胎教), which is not "prenatal care" in any common sense of the word. It's the only entry we have, so I went looking for the "correct" one...

I think there is no perfect term for "prenatal care" in Japanese, because the Japanese system wraps pre/post-birth care up as a single concept (i.e. perinatal care). The core of "prenatal care" seems to me to be regular medical checkups, which is this term. "prenatal care" also includes screening (出生前診断). If you want a more useful term in Japanese, you want perinatal care (周産期医療).

This is the only entry I think "prenatal care" can be legitimately placed on without introducing confusion, so I would prefer to xref the "missing" parts from here.

If you search "prenatal care" "tokyo", visit various clinics' English pages, find "prenatal care", switch languages to Japanese, you'll find that "prenatal care" is common in English, but the Japanese versions are all over the place. This just isn't a "standard" category like in English. "検診・胎児ドック・Prenatal Care" was a top-level menu on one site, for example.

I think antenatal is British? Never heard of it...

The verb is relatively common. The spelling 買増す exists too, but is primarily used for the derived noun 買増し (usually in the context of financial markets: "top-up purchase", "incremental buying" etc.), for the verb itself it's relatively rare. Not sure if 買い増し・買増し [n,vs] is worth a special entry.

We don't typically use [rare] for fields of study unless there's a more common synonym. "oology" isn't exactly common in English either.
I don't think "oölogy" is needed. All the English dictionaries I checked only have "oology".
