Comments: | There is a good reason for having a form like サッサと available to text-glossing systems. It is very useful, if not vital, to be able to handle katakana forms a bit separately. I'm comfortable with サッサと ending up as a search-only/hidden form, because glossing software can still use it, but it's important that it be available. |
|
13. | A 2022-07-19 04:00:03 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Yes, esp. when it comes to hiragana vs katakana I think "90k in the ngrams" by itself is a meaningless statistic. Jisho, yomichan, wwwjdic can all find this entry fine without "サッサと" being explicitly included. |
|
12. | A 2022-07-19 00:06:43 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think it matters so much when it's simply hiragana vs. katakana. Most clients handle the conversion themselves. I have no objection to keeping it for now but I agree with Marcus that it should be a hidden form. アリガトウ gets a massive 230475 n-grams but we (rightly) don't include it as a reading. Once hidden forms are implemented, I see no reason not to use percentage-based thresholds (allowing for exceptions here and there). |

Comments: | adj-na indicates that the word is a 形容動詞, not that it typically takes な. A 形容動詞 doesn't stop being adjectival when it's used predicatively. There are quite a few 形容動詞 that are rarely used attributively. That being said, I hadn't noticed that sankoku (in contrast to the other kokugos) has 幸甚 as a noun only. Also, I might have been wrong to assume that 幸甚に is adverbial in 幸甚に存じる. Nouns can take に in 〜存じる expressions. Noun glosses are less elegant but I think 幸甚 is in fact functioning as a noun in all the examples in the JEs and kokugos. There's only one sense here. I don't think "obliged" is any less correct than the other glosses. It's synonymous with "grateful" within the contexts in which 幸甚 is actually used. |

Comments: | I like the glosses here, but I agree with Jim that placing [adj-na] at the front gives the wrong idea about usage. I imagine the goal of [adj-na,n] is to be consistent with adjective glosses, but really the glosses do not correspond to adj-na usage. 幸甚な母親 is not "an extremely grateful mother". "幸甚な人" doesn't even return google OR even a single book result. So putting [adj-na] up front is in a way even more misleading. As part of the big picture in thinking about this, is there any way you can imagine adding similar glosses (grateful, obliged, happy) to 幸い? They'd surely make a bigger impact there. I still think there might be something to the idea of a dedicated [id] sense. The other problem here is that "幸甚" does not literally(or even figuratively) mean "obliged", and right now it kind-of looks like it does... Highlighting that the glosses are idiomatic might help with that. I realize this is not something that is currently done. |

Comments: | adj-na is correct. It's a 形容動詞 that's only used predicatively or adverbially. I don't think "usu. as ~です" is a helpful note, and 幸甚に存じます only accounts for a little over 10% of usage. It's difficult to explain how the word is used without cluttering the entry. I think a simple "usu. in letters" note is sufficient. |

Comments: | Used heavily in formal apologies. Removed [uk], adding [form]. Flagged as 文 in sankoku. Not generally [uk] in the ngrams; This looks like a common term where the kanji is commonly present. "quite" and "highly" match [form] and are useful for common adjectives: "quite tall", "quite/highly doubtful", "quite/highly unlikely", etc. This is a common term (ichi1,news2,nf31) whose gloss depends highly on context, so I think a few more applicable suggestions won't hurt. |

Various lyrics were composed. Some of them are set in the 5-7-7-7-5 structure. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/甚句 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinku lit. "excessive verse" or "lively song") is a form of traditional and folkloric Japanese songs. The actual form of jinku songs probably appeared in the Edo period. Jinku is a vocal performance using verses. These songs often depicts qualities of character, love stories, worklife, or comedic situations. Like the dodoitsu genre, jinku uses lyrics constituted by one chorus of 7, 7, 7, 5. Each song can be divided in 6 parts.:[1] https://thehiddenjapan.com/sakata-jinku-nagashi-dance-festival/ Sumo version: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/相撲甚句 daijs: 民謡の一。多く七・七・七・五の4句形式で、節は地方によって異なる。江戸末期から流行。越後甚句・米山よねやま甚句・名古屋甚句・博多甚句・相撲甚句など。「地じの句」「神供じんく」の意からとも、また、越後国の甚九という人名からともいうが未詳。 |
|
Comments: | The previous [lit] gloss is etymological, and not otherwise used with this meaning (see daijs, nikk, etc.) kotobank includes encyclopedic entries on this subject. You can listen to these on youtube. Performed at festivals. And there is a subgenre sung by Sumo wrestlers called... sumo-jinku. Sumo Singing - Jinku (Sumo Folk Songs) at Hono Ozumo Yasukuni Shrine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh_-63hFdEE It's not that I think "jinku" is a particularly useful gloss, so much as wanting something to anchor this on. It seems impractical to give an adequate definition (vs. tamagozake, which is pretty simple). "Jinku" may be accompanied by dance, but this seems unimportant to mention. |

|
Comments: | Can't speak to historical usage, but modern use seems to clearly prefer せんじゃ over せんしゃ (the latter being nonexistent, even though the old kokugos seem to feel differently). うらないしゃ needs the full 占い者 form. It really feels like うらないしゃ should come first as a reading, even though daijs doesn't give it explicitly. This is probably one of those [col]/[form] kunyomi/onyomi splits we've put into one entry. Just searching for "占者" alone, this is what I encountered(せんじゃ): Manga called 占者高生 星見先輩. Reading: せんじゃこうせい ほしみせんぱい https://mangapedia.com/占者高生星見先輩-qbkwratb9 Fortune-teller playing card: 未来占者 = みらいせんじゃ https://www.cardrush.jp/product/51747 Another: 探検隊の占者 たんけんたいのせんじゃ https://mtg-jp.com/products/card-gallery/0000192/491685/ うらないじゃ(ja) was noted previously as only in nikk. That would be a very unusual pronunciation (there are 0 other occurrences of verb-form-い者 as じゃ, and only a few nouns that end in いじゃ. At best, most likely archaic. For me, this falls into the "more harm than good" category to be visible. There might be some book results from the 1800s, or I'd just drop it entirely. Windows 11 IME cannot complete any of these but うらないしゃ. ngram counts for furigana forms are useless for determining frequency, because せんしゃ and せんじゃ have more common, unrelated uses (戦車, 選者). The terms are too rare to search ngrams with disambiguating collocations. |
