"Scott" tried to remove "catholicity" in 2016 at the same time that he noticed a dup with "普偏性". With an "I'm inclined to agree" from Jim, the dups got merged, but "catholicity" returned. I don't know if this was intentional or not. If it was an oversight, then we're all on the same page, and I can save you the time :) If you like, here's an excellent discussion here with many contrasting views on limited recognition of "small-c catholic" in the English-speaking world(this was all new to me). https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/208949/catholic-with-a-small-c |

"laws and ordinances" almost never appears. eow.alc.co.jp has even more glosses than I've included in the refs. To my mind, and "ordinance" is a law passed by a local government. Here's one sense from oxford: a law, usually one made by a city or regional government: To the contrary, the regulations identified by 法令 would not seem to be limited to local government, so the "ordinances" looks a bit odd to me here. |

Comments: | As of this year (2023), Japanese law has a single crime for rape that covers various circumstances. Before that, there was a distinction between "rape involving violence or threat" and "incapacitated rape". According to the kokugos, 暴行 refers to the former category. In US federal law, the terminology is "by force or threat". Maybe just "by force" is sufficient. |

Comments: | I assume the intended nuance from "(violent)" might be similar to the typically-understood distinction between "assault" and "aggravated assault"? Of course the action in question is inherently violent, but we cannot deny that there is nevertheless a significant difference in *character* between the stereotypical "jumped in an alley" scenario versus the (tragically) more common "taken advantage of by someone you trust" scenario... Is there anyone familiar with how these distinctions are drawn in practice in, for example, Japanese law? What an unpleasant topic. |

Comments: | Not saying this string of kanji doesn't exist anywhere in Japanese, but I can't find a ref for it besides 難読・異読地名辞典. 大揚 certainly appears in place names. kotobank gives, for example, 大楊村(おおようむら). Originally came here because of "catholicity". If this is truly [adj-na], then shouldn't the glosses read: largehearted; liberal; catholic; generous; magnanimous I would minimally remove "liberal" and "catholic" from the list. And of course mark [rare], or something. "大揚な" not in google news, not on twitter, perhaps 10 book results (which include "大揚な母", so maybe?). But hard to pin down a meaning from so little. Comments: | ***Realized がら落ち is already in JMdict. The origin of the term as coming from ナイアガラ also seems inaccurate, as a separate finance source (posted at the bottom of this comment) lists the origin as coming from ガラガラ (1003290). It sounds probable to me that this is the actual origin and the Niagara Falls association came later. That being said, ガラ on its own in Katakana does show up quite a bit, as well as the verbified ガラる. Perhaps a separate entry may be warranted? Here is the other source I mentioned: https://www.ifinance.ne.jp/glossary/souba/sou362.html#gsc.tab=0 |

|
Comments: | Added second definition: ガラ to mean "massive drop". This term comes from the last two characters of ナイアガラ and is most commonly used to describe a steep decline in the value of a stock or cryptocurrency, likening it to Niagara Falls. A verb version "ガラる" exists as well, also mentioned in two of the sources listed. |
