Comments: | note copied from 別状. "shy face" seems to have missed the mark. kokugos define with 気後れ: losing one's nerve; feeling awkward; feeling timid; feeling hesitant; feeling nervous; feeling diffident; being daunted or 臆したようす: feeling hesitant or timid That said, this appears to be almost non-existent outside of the larger negated expression. Google "臆面" and 臆面もない comes back. Dictionary entries for 臆面 invariably give 臆面もない・なく as the example.(sankoku gives なく)。 |

Comments: | As of this year (2023), Japanese law has a single crime for rape that covers various circumstances. Before that, there was a distinction between "rape involving violence or threat" and "incapacitated rape". According to the kokugos, 暴行 refers to the former category. In US federal law, the terminology is "by force or threat". Maybe just "by force" is sufficient. |

Comments: | I assume the intended nuance from "(violent)" might be similar to the typically-understood distinction between "assault" and "aggravated assault"? Of course the action in question is inherently violent, but we cannot deny that there is nevertheless a significant difference in *character* between the stereotypical "jumped in an alley" scenario versus the (tragically) more common "taken advantage of by someone you trust" scenario... Is there anyone familiar with how these distinctions are drawn in practice in, for example, Japanese law? What an unpleasant topic. |

Comments: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augury Augury is the practice from ancient Roman religion of interpreting omens from the observed behavior of birds. Removed "augury". I see no evidence that this term has any particular association with birds, or that divination via bird behavior was even practiced in China/Japan. Turtle shells and animal bones seems to be the usual practice. augury seems to be an ancient roman practice. There are some terms we could add for it, including: 鳥卜(ちょうぼく)、卜鳥(ぼくちょう), and 鳥占 (とり‐うら) 鳥占 444 94.3% 鳥卜 27 5.7% 卜鳥 0 0.0% As these seem to be translations of concepts from Roman history, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. |

Comments: | The primary use seems to be "clarity" or "intelligibility" and I have moved this to [1]. This is a straightforward combination of 明瞭 + 度, clear + degree-of = clarity. The "articulation" gloss appears to have spawned out of some telecommunications industry jargon related to voice-transmission. There is a somewhat-dated wikipedia page on 明瞭度, which xrefs to "Articulation Score". It is a summary of a bunch of telecoms papers. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/明瞭度 The research papers at the bottom are all in reference to telecommunications and digital audio signal fidelity (voice-signal intelligibility). This differs from the standard "articulation" used in linguistics. 調音: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/調音 Here is a whitepaper published in 2003 by the company Polycom: https://studylib.net/doc/18172053/the-effect-of-bandwidth-on-speech-intelligibility Of all the elements that affect the intelligibility of speech in telephony, bandwidth has been shown to be one of the most critical.... From this paper, linguee.jp found the line: Articulation index, word articulation, and syllable articulation are all measurements that measure the degree of accuracy translated as: 明瞭度指数、単語明瞭度、音 節明瞭度 はす べて 、話し手の言った単語を聞き手が 正しく判断できる度合いを計測する尺度です。 This is all fabricated telecommunications jargon. To be clear, linguists may absolutely use 明瞭度 all over the place with regards to speech and sound transmission. But it would be glossed as "intelligibility" or "clarity", and not "articulation". |

Comments: | We have the two other common collocations, but we are actually missing the most-common grammatical structure with も (see ngrams). This verb is almost exclusively used with some variant of "身の毛". I can't find any examples of a statement like 「よだちました」 being used without a subject, and it's hard to imagine this making any sense. Rather than including "have the creeps" here, it seems more useful to delegate that sense to the xref(s). sanoku: [おそろしさなどで]体の毛が立つ。「身の毛もー」 I grant that the wording of the kokugos seems to suggest that "弥立つ" may include the whole sentiment of "hairs standing on end due to fear", but this seems more a reflection of 弥立つ not being used *except* for this expression. If you just search for "よだつ", it's *all* some variant of the xrefs. The pronunciation いよだつ is extremely rare(though daijs does list it). I don't know what else to tag it but maybe [ok]. The [expr] xrefs already don't include it (even though it is the same verb with the same sense). It *barely* appears in old google book references. Sample search: "よだつ" "site:twitter.com" Thousands of matches, all with 毛. if you search for いよだつ instead, you get 3 links which look like false-positives. One person does make an etymological comment in a reply to a post that uses 「身の毛がよだつとな!!」 身の毛が弥立つ(いよだつ) 『弥よ』と『立つ』 『弥よ』は『いよいよ』の『いよ』だそう。 いよいよ毛が逆立つ、と言う意味らしい。 |

Comments: | Only 4 Google hits. Nothing in the n-grams. Okinawan is its own language. We typically only include Okinawan words that are at least somewhat well known to Japanese speakers. This surely doesn't make the grade. |

Comments: | Maybe this works. Some of the net discussion links it to ヒュン(と). Because I have changed a reading field here, the xref on チンさむ現象 will need redoing when/if this is approved. |

Comments: | Hello, thank you for the feedback. I added this term because it came up when I researched タマヒュン. Upon further research, チンさむ現象 originates from a Fuji Television program that ran from 2009 to 2014 called 人志松本の○○な話, as per this source: https://moto-neta.com/movie/chinsamu/ Here is the Wikipedia page for the program: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/人志松本の○○な話 The program also coined the term ちんさむロード to describe a steep road that causes passengers to feel ちんさむ. I am going to shorten the entry to just チンさむ/ちんさむ, as the 現象 part appears to have been added later. Let me know what you think. |
