Comments: | note copied from 別状. "shy face" seems to have missed the mark. kokugos define with 気後れ: losing one's nerve; feeling awkward; feeling timid; feeling hesitant; feeling nervous; feeling diffident; being daunted or 臆したようす: feeling hesitant or timid That said, this appears to be almost non-existent outside of the larger negated expression. Google "臆面" and 臆面もない comes back. Dictionary entries for 臆面 invariably give 臆面もない・なく as the example.(sankoku gives なく)。 |

Refs: | daijs 使いをやって安否を問うこと。また、使者を派遣して、贈り物をすること。 |
Comments: | Current gloss appears incorrect(see daijs). Term extremely rare. No ngrams. No news, no twitter, few google, old books. 7 entries on wikipedia all reference the same identical passage: 或屬韓或屬倭,國王不能自通使聘 Example: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/三韓征伐 Google hits bolstered by this also being Chinese. Either: 1. redo gloss by trusting daijs and translating the daijs definition 2. delete the entry, because we can't confirm the meaning anyway, because there are almost no accessible examples to look at. Here's a quick attempt at a new gloss from daijs, but I'm not sure I really understand the definition. [1] inquiring about someone's wellbeing via envoy. dispatching an envoy to deliver gifts. We can't have every obscure term. Here's one we are missing that I encountered looking for this one: 聘問 196 daijs: (スル)進物をたずさえて訪問すること。 Well, there are *some* examples of 使聘 in google books. Here's one... 琉球の若い芸術家は、この時初の内、琉球の使聘事終て帰るとて、伏見に来り止ると聞て、同月八日にかしこに在る薩摩守の第に行向ひて、美里みざと期をあやまりしかば、其の来るを待に不レ及、十月十二日に打立、同廿四日京に入りぬ。 That doesn't really explain what 使聘 means, but it seems consistent with having been dispatched as an envoy... |

Refs: | sankoku: 獅子 1. ライオン 2. 唐獅子。特に唐獅子舞の面 唐獅子 中国で、ライオンをもとに考えた想像上の動物。しし。からしし。 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komainu Komainu (狛犬), often called lion-dogs in English, are statue pairs of lion-like creatures either guarding the entrance or the honden, or inner shrine of many Japanese Shinto shrines During the early Heian period (ninth century), the tradition changed and the two statues started to be different and be called differently. One had its mouth open and was called shishi (獅子, lit. 'lion') because, as before, it resembled that animal. The other had its mouth closed, looked rather like a dog, was called komainu, or "Goguryeo dog", and sometimes had a single horn on its head.[8] Gradually the animals returned to be identical, but for their mouths, and ended up being called both komainu.[8] |
Comments: | changed "dog" to "lion-dog", added x-ref to 唐獅子. Added (stone) for consistency, to the extent that [2] is focused on shrine statues. This edit motivated by my edit of 唐獅子, which seems to generally translate as "Chinese lion". sankoku has a circular reference between 獅子 and 唐獅子. If we gloss the x-ref 狛犬 with the "dog" kanji as "lion-dog", surely 獅子 "lion" counterpart merits being at least a lion-dog as well. (if not a lion outright) It seems possible to me that [2] is perhaps overly specific (or that we need [3]: Chinese guardian lion). The shinto stone lions are just one place that 獅子 appear in Japanese culture. Numerous references indicate that: 1. shishi came first to temples 2. then we had shishi on the left, komainu on the right 3. shishi and komainu took on each other's characteristics until they were nearly indistinguishable, except that shishi is always on the left, with its mouth open, and the komainu appears to the right with mouth closed. 4. They are both just called komainu today. (which is why the 狛犬, confusingly, does not say "right-handed" stone lion-dog. It now covers both). |

Comments: | Can't speak to historical usage, but modern use seems to clearly prefer せんじゃ over せんしゃ (the latter being nonexistent, even though the old kokugos seem to feel differently). うらないしゃ needs the full 占い者 form. It really feels like うらないしゃ should come first as a reading, even though daijs doesn't give it explicitly. This is probably one of those [col]/[form] kunyomi/onyomi splits we've put into one entry. Just searching for "占者" alone, this is what I encountered(せんじゃ): Manga called 占者高生 星見先輩. Reading: せんじゃこうせい ほしみせんぱい https://mangapedia.com/占者高生星見先輩-qbkwratb9 Fortune-teller playing card: 未来占者 = みらいせんじゃ https://www.cardrush.jp/product/51747 Another: 探検隊の占者 たんけんたいのせんじゃ https://mtg-jp.com/products/card-gallery/0000192/491685/ うらないじゃ(ja) was noted previously as only in nikk. That would be a very unusual pronunciation (there are 0 other occurrences of verb-form-い者 as じゃ, and only a few nouns that end in いじゃ. At best, most likely archaic. For me, this falls into the "more harm than good" category to be visible. There might be some book results from the 1800s, or I'd just drop it entirely. Windows 11 IME cannot complete any of these but うらないしゃ. ngram counts for furigana forms are useless for determining frequency, because せんしゃ and せんじゃ have more common, unrelated uses (戦車, 選者). The terms are too rare to search ngrams with disambiguating collocations. |

Comments: | **I did not realize もうひと頑張り was in JMdict already, as I searched the database for ひと頑張り as its own word. Ironically, the weblio link I used comes from JMdict. I would propose ひと頑張り as its own word and not exclusively found in the phrase もうひと頑張り. For instance, 最後のひと頑張り is another phrase that contains ひと頑張り, an example of which can be found in the Eijirō examples page here (https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=ひと頑張り ). That being said, I understand if this entry is seen as unnecessary. |
