If you actually do a google search (news or general) on "恐れ戦く" vs "恐れ慄く", you'll see 恐れ慄く actually does win. (And it clearly wins on twitter, which I noted on the おののくentry) |

The compound word 拉致問題, which requires you to know *this* word, is [spec1] and thus marked "common" in jisho.org. I don't know how this wasn't swept up by one of the [news] collations... A bit baffled. So baffled, I went to archive.org to get the Mainichi Shinbun stats file. This term is ranked ~43,000 with 15 occurrences, presumably over 4 years. It is the only term that appears with the "拉" kanji at all. 誘拐 is ranked ~3500 with 1639 instances. Editorial policy of the newspaper in the late 90s? 拉致 seems common enough in news searches today. Just a sanity check, Google news "reports" (I know, I know...) "拉致された" 4920 hits "誘拐された" 5870 hits |

Comments: | ngram count of 807 is quite low in any case. Considered [rare], used [food] instead. "half-baked" can mean undercooked English. I don't believe "half-boiled" carries the same nuance. If anything, seems like a legitimate form of egg preparation. sankoku and daijs both use 不十分, "not enough", "insufficient". "undercooked" in most cases seems like a useful gloss, except that "boiling" is the method of cooking. "underboiled", like "half-boiled", doesn't really mean anything to me in English though. I can't figure out if 生茹で麺 is a particular product or not(where "half-boiled noodles" might apply). Even so, I find English examples like the one below, which still use "undercooked": https://www.allrecipes.com/article/pasta-cooking-basics/#:~:text=If you want to pre,or two, until heated through. Can I cook pasta ahead of time then reheat it? If you want to pre-cook the pasta, and then reheat later, you can do this by cooking it as usual, but leave it slightly undercooked. |

|
Comments: | Reordered kanji and readings. Seen a couple of references indicating that "弓弭" is used primarily to distinguish from the nock/筈 on an arrow(both read はず), and in these cases the reading seems to be ゆはず. (This is the only reading offered on the wikipedia page on Japanese bows 和弓). If you image search 弓筈, you'll primarily get the tips of arrows. Search for 弓弭, and you'll get diagrams of bows. 弭 seems to be a kanji dedicated to the nocks of a bow itself. ("The ears of the bow", neat) I have proposed new entries for 末弭 and 本弭(which come up in all kinds of diagrams), which reinforce that はず in the context of "tip of a bow" is more likely to be 弭 than 筈. (even though sankoku does not mention 弭, this strikes me as an effort to simplify-out generally-rare kanji). Pronunciation is a little harder to reason about. sankoku prefers ゆはず. I have dug up some references that give ゆはず. Seems like ゆみはず is the reading you'd just guess if you hadn't learned the term. |

Comments: | After I wrote up my analysis, I swapped [1] and [2]. Seems pretty overwhelmingly sexual in literature, and online in general. See the yahoo reference for an off-the-cuff remark on the overtly sexual connotations of this term. [vulg]? [sl]? Maybe just [col](not in the dictionary...). I personally think [vulg] is probably too strong, but it is pretty obviously very sexual and will appear with other [vulg] terms, so I don't know how to tag that. Maybe something like 押し倒す does: to push (and hold) someone down (esp. with sexual connotations) Pretty funny to stumble on in any case. I think I would liken this to the English word "fondle". Sure, it doesn't *have* to be sexual. You *can* fondle around for keys in your pocket... Google image search is *entirely* blocked "safe search" settings. Yourei examples are extensive, and the direct object is overwhelmingly 乳房 , followed by 胸. If you have safe-search off on your image search, this will be confirmed. sankoku uses くしゃくしゃ , which is indeed crumpling paper. daijs is similar. This to me looks like a dictionary shying away from a vulgar or slang usage. [1] and [2] seem pretty evidently independent to me. ~90% of yourei contexts are overtly sexual. There was one occurrence (3%) of "crumpling paper". On the first page alone, 28 total results, the direct objects were: 乳房 13 hits - breasts 胸 6 hits - chest 陰茎と睾丸 1 hit - penis & testicles ペニス 2 体 1 (sexual) 躰 1 (sexual) 1 procession of body parts, don't know where it leads (left arm, right arm, neck...) Possibly one non-sexual reference rubbing ones own face between the eyebrows 眉間 All of those were sense [1]. There was *one* example of [2], crumpling a newspaper: カサカサと新聞紙を揉みしだく気配もする。痛くないんだろうか。 On the ngrams, usually there are some flowery words between 乳房 and 揉みしだく. The ngrams counts only capture the extremely direct statements. You could certainly make similar points for 揉む and "massage", but 揉みしだく seems to be far more exclusively sexual. (compare image search results, for example). |

Comments: | In daijs with picture. Appears on various diagrams of bow anatomy. Good exemplar of barely-represented 弭(which seems pretty much dedicated to bow-nocks). Considered "upper/lower", wikipedia uses "top/bottom knock", which seems good as anything. Distinction not usually made in English in any standard way. Separate potential entry 上弭 うわはず also attested, but rare enough that it's not worth it to me personally. すえはず seems like a modern mis-reading of an archaic form. Doesn't seem to pop up outside of the kokugo entries themselves. (bare search for うらはず returns archery results, すえはず returns dictionaries). |
