This seems to be the go-to word to describe separation anxiety-caused clinginess in babies/toddlers, I hear it used like this alot. Sure, in the literal sense, yu are specifically talking about the baby "chasing after" the parent, but this isn't how it's usually phrased like in English. I think this probably ought to be a separate sense.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komainu
Komainu (狛犬), often called lion-dogs in English, are statue pairs of lion-like creatures either guarding the entrance or the honden, or inner shrine of many Japanese Shinto shrines

During the early Heian period (ninth century), the tradition changed and the two statues started to be different and be called differently. One had its mouth open and was called shishi (獅子, lit. 'lion') because, as before, it resembled that animal. The other had its mouth closed, looked rather like a dog, was called komainu, or "Goguryeo dog", and sometimes had a single horn on its head.[8] Gradually the animals returned to be identical, but for their mouths, and ended up being called both komainu.[8]
  Comments:
changed "dog" to "lion-dog", added x-ref to 唐獅子. Added (stone) for consistency, to the extent that [2] is focused on shrine statues.

This edit motivated by my edit of 唐獅子, which seems to generally translate as "Chinese lion".

sankoku has a circular reference between 獅子 and 唐獅子.

If we gloss the x-ref 狛犬 with the "dog" kanji as "lion-dog", surely 獅子 "lion" counterpart merits being at least a lion-dog as well. (if not a lion outright)

It seems possible to me that [2] is perhaps overly specific (or that we need [3]: Chinese guardian lion). The shinto stone lions are just one place that 獅子 appear in Japanese culture.

Numerous references indicate that:
1. shishi came first to temples
2. then we had shishi on the left, komainu on the right
3. shishi and komainu took on each other's characteristics until they were nearly indistinguishable, except that shishi is always on the left, with its mouth open, and the komainu appears to the right with mouth closed.
4. They are both just called komainu today. (which is why the 狛犬, confusingly, does not say "right-handed" stone lion-dog. It now covers both).

I'd rather not give "printing" as a gloss on its own. I think "(textile) printing" solves the issue well enough(vs. textile printing; printing). This term only applies to textile/fabric/cloth printing with patterns and dyes.

I'm especially suspicious of the おしぞめ reading, but daijs lists it, nikk has it, and furigana.info gives an example. Clearly not the common reading (which seems to be なっせん).

唐獅子
1300s
Placed at the entrance to shrines and temples in Japan, guardian figures ward off evil spirits. These guardians used to be painted red and white and are distinguishable by their facial expressions: the open-mouthed animal is a karashishi, or “Chinese lion,” while the close-mouthed beast, which once had a single horn protruding from its head, is called a komainu, or “Korean dog.”

Plenty of "Chinese Lion" here.
https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/唐獅子

https://www.britannica.com/art/karajishi
…called komainu (“Korean dogs”) or karajishi (“Chinese lions”) are placed in front of a shrine. Originally they served to protect the sacred buildings from evil and defilements.
  Comments:
Wiktionary says "karajishi" is an English word now. Didn't add the gloss though.

Reversed the readings. MacOS IME supports only じし, sankoku gives only じし, wikipedia articles seem to use じし, furigana.info is 15-to-5 in favor of this reading.

As for the xref, it seems clear that 獅子 can mean 唐獅子, so maybe the reverse xref is more necessary. I think the entry in 獅子[2] is perhaps overly specific (or that a third, more general "mythical Chinese lion" sense may be warranted). Or we can just let the xrefs do the heavy lifting. It seems that *some* shinto 獅子 are 唐獅子, but that 唐獅子 does not generally indicate a statue.

Google the English "karashishi" or "karajishi". Lots of English-language treatments of this term which literally translates to Chinese (唐) + Chinese Lion(獅子). Examples are bountiful. Usually appears simply as "Chinese lion", but this would be ambiguous without context.

Obviously all representations are artistic. "Chinese lions" are mythical. Nothing about "portrait" baked into 唐獅子 though.

I think I've seen statistics tags removed in the past where the term was a common proper name.

If you image-search 桂林, you'll get beautiful scenery. But the photos/paintings are specifically of the Chinese city/region, which just happens to be very beautiful.

This entry currently has stats tags [news2,nf46]. I think these should be removed.

See notes/refs on new jmnedict entry for 桂林, a city that is "One of the most popular tourist destinations in China". This undoubtedly explains the news frequency. (I don't think katsura forests are a common enough news topic...)

I strongly suspect this is [rare] for [1], but it's hard to prove a negative. This is the kind of word where I can just imagine running around telling Japanese people it means "beautiful forest" and getting "eeeeeeehhhh、しらなかった" in reply.

If we're taking daijs at its word, everywhere seems to list a second definition from that source:
2 文人の仲間。

obviously *not* in sankoku, so it's at least not common

Vote to remove [3], unless there is some special support out there. This is just saying that somewhere, at some point in time, "Goguryeo " was used as shorthand for "Goguryeo dog". Which to be fair, I'm sure it was if there was sufficient context.

Neither the kanji 犬 nor 獅子 appear anywhere in any reference on the kotobank page for 高麗.
https://kotobank.jp/word/高麗-63319

I understand we had a [restr] on 狛, but I can't find evidence for that either.
Here's the nikk page, also no mention. こま【高麗・狛】
https://kotobank.jp/word/高麗・狛-269235

I just added 高麗犬 to 狛犬 as [oK]. Seems the [restr] we had here is probably invalid, but I suspect there may be a restriction on the pronunciation. (こまonly?)

It looked very odd to see that there were three types of stone lion-dogs: 獅子, 狛犬, and 高麗. Well, the last is just 高麗犬=狛犬 after all...
