I've already asked this on GitHub but I'll repeat it here. Do we want to use the [cards] tag for names of card games considering that we don't use [sports] for names of sports?
I don't really mind either way but if we do tag them, I don't think the parenthesised part should be left simply as "game", "Japanese game", etc. I think it looks odd without "card" or some other descriptor that indicates it's a card game.

"shy face" seems to have missed the mark.

kokugos define with 気後れ:
losing one's nerve; feeling awkward; feeling timid; feeling hesitant; feeling nervous; feeling diffident; being daunted

or 臆したようす: feeling hesitant or timid

That said, this appears to be almost non-existent outside of the larger negated expression. Google "臆面" and 臆面もない comes back. Dictionary entries for 臆面 invariably give 臆面もない・なく as the example.(sankoku gives なく)。

Interesting. I note that the official translation uses "fragmentary scrawl", which aligns very closely with the native speaker's interpretation.
As for the "third meaning", I think it's covered by sense 1, which we've kept very general.

A native japanese speaker was so kind as to give me his thoughts regarding 破綻 in the context of my example sentence (from the prev. ref.), link above.
Despite the added meanings appearing in some dictionaries, likely I had misunderstood what 破綻 meant in that context, and there is actually a third meaning for 破綻, from his example sentence: "「彼の話は破綻している」(日常会話では「筋が通っていない」と表現されます)".
I leave this info here in case someone wants to improve this entry further.

  Comments:
The primary use seems to be "clarity" or "intelligibility" and I have moved this to [1]. This is a straightforward combination of 明瞭 + 度, clear + degree-of = clarity. The "articulation" gloss appears to have spawned out of some telecommunications industry jargon related to voice-transmission.

There is a somewhat-dated wikipedia page on 明瞭度, which xrefs to "Articulation Score". It is a summary of a bunch of telecoms papers.
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/明瞭度
The research papers at the bottom are all in reference to telecommunications and digital audio signal fidelity (voice-signal intelligibility).

This differs from the standard "articulation" used in linguistics. 調音:
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/調音

Here is a whitepaper published in 2003 by the company Polycom:
https://studylib.net/doc/18172053/the-effect-of-bandwidth-on-speech-intelligibility
Of all the elements that affect the intelligibility of speech in telephony, bandwidth has been shown to be one of the most critical....

From this paper, linguee.jp found the line:
Articulation index, word articulation, and syllable articulation are all measurements that measure the degree of accuracy
translated as:
明瞭度指数、単語明瞭度、音 節明瞭度 はす べて 、話し手の言った単語を聞き手が 正しく判断できる度合いを計測する尺度です。

This is all fabricated telecommunications jargon.

To be clear, linguists may absolutely use 明瞭度 all over the place with regards to speech and sound transmission. But it would be glossed as "intelligibility" or "clarity", and not "articulation".

sankoku and daijs both say morning, and both xref the far, far more common 元旦.

Every single news reference is to 歳旦祭, and a majority of twitter hits on "歳旦" are for 歳旦祭(さいたんさい), which says to me that this is even more rare as a generic use of "new year's morning". Maybe not [rare], but comparatively [rare] next to 元旦.

This entry currently has stats tags [news2,nf46]. I think these should be removed.

See notes/refs on new jmnedict entry for 桂林, a city that is "One of the most popular tourist destinations in China". This undoubtedly explains the news frequency. (I don't think katsura forests are a common enough news topic...)

I strongly suspect this is [rare] for [1], but it's hard to prove a negative. This is the kind of word where I can just imagine running around telling Japanese people it means "beautiful forest" and getting "eeeeeeehhhh、しらなかった" in reply.

If we're taking daijs at its word, everywhere seems to list a second definition from that source:
2 文人の仲間。

obviously *not* in sankoku, so it's at least not common

Reordered kanji and readings. Seen a couple of references indicating that "弓弭" is used primarily to distinguish from the nock/筈 on an arrow(both read はず), and in these cases the reading seems to be ゆはず. (This is the only reading offered on the wikipedia page on Japanese bows 和弓).

If you image search 弓筈, you'll primarily get the tips of arrows. Search for 弓弭, and you'll get diagrams of bows.

弭 seems to be a kanji dedicated to the nocks of a bow itself. ("The ears of the bow", neat)

I have proposed new entries for 末弭 and 本弭(which come up in all kinds of diagrams), which reinforce that はず in the context of "tip of a bow" is more likely to be 弭 than 筈. (even though sankoku does not mention 弭, this strikes me as an effort to simplify-out generally-rare kanji).

Pronunciation is a little harder to reason about. sankoku prefers ゆはず. I have dug up some references that give ゆはず. Seems like ゆみはず is the reading you'd just guess if you hadn't learned the term.

"cinnamon tree" as a gloss seems ambiguous.

Seems silly to not translate セイロン to Ceylon somewhere even if it is falling out of fashion in some places. Not sure if zeylanicum and verum are both needed somewhere, but wikipedia is under "verum" now in both English and Japanese.

Never heard of "boiled to a turn". Googled and found principally references to J-E dictionaries based on this entry. Zero twitter hits. Scrolling through google results, you'll find just a couple of modern native-English uses.

Google book results yield examples from the 1850s~1950s. I'm sure some people have encountered the expression in literature, or grown up with it, but it seems too niche to warrant inclusion here. Especially since 茹で上げる is commonplace.

In daijs with picture. Appears on various diagrams of bow anatomy. Good exemplar of barely-represented 弭(which seems pretty much dedicated to bow-nocks).

Considered "upper/lower", wikipedia uses "top/bottom knock", which seems good as anything. Distinction not usually made in English in any standard way.

Separate potential entry 上弭 うわはず also attested, but rare enough that it's not worth it to me personally.

すえはず seems like a modern mis-reading of an archaic form. Doesn't seem to pop up outside of the kokugo entries themselves. (bare search for うらはず returns archery results, すえはず returns dictionaries).

  Comments:
jmdict has some entries of suspicious utility for 桂林. "Forest of 桂", and "beautiful forest". ngrams overwhelmingly refer to this Chinese city, which wikipedia identifies as "one of China's most popular tourist destinations", adding that "the epithet "By water, by mountains, most lovely, Guilin" (山水甲天下)[3] is often associated with the city.

Wikipedia lists with 市, but this seems most often omitted. Wikipedia doesn't seem to acknowledge コイリン, but it appears on a yahoo weather forecast and in various reference materials. グイリン appears in the wikipedia sidebar.
カタカナ転写	グイリン
グイリン Appears to be a back-formation from English. For example, the Sheraton Guilin Hotel in katakana becomes シェラトン グイリン ホテル (桂林喜来登飯店)
https://www.jtb.co.jp/ovs_htl/detail/search_detail/10317/

All search results for 桂林 point at this city. I am having a hard time even imaging how I would find a reference that meant "beautiful forest" in isolation(even accepting that they probably exist somewhere).

Reverso search is 100% "Guilin", the city in China... Filtering on "forest", there are no results, except a few where the city of "Guilin" and "forest" coincidentally both appear.
