Comments: | I think both x-refs are needed. ピットアウト is the antonym. ピットストップ should be a bidirectional reference, as ピットイン is both 1/2 of the pit stop, and an alias for the entire pit stop, depending on context. But ピットストップ itself is a perfectly fine gloss for "pit stop", based on the n-gram counts. (notes on ピットストップ) |

Comments: | My grandmother served in WW2, and every time I write about this I wander off to find this gloss again. I think I've used 軍隊 in the past as well, but this term seems a bit more common by n-grams. I think this is more about English than Japanese. Whenever we talk about military affiliation, I think the word "service" is used simply as a sign of respect, and will often be the better gloss. "serving (in)" isn't likely to make this any easier to find in the E->J direction (we have 63 glosses for "to serve", and 40 for "serving", and 151 for "service"), so maybe that's a lost cause, but you can only do what you can do. |

Comments: | Was looking for a good way to describe short-stops on a cross-country trip and encountered this on reverso. Maybe some Japanese people might borrow the north american usage for this, but not sure it needs to be called out. する usage, if present, seems at least far-less common than for ピットイン, which is listed as vs. Note... wikipedia seems to indicate that ピットイン is just 1/2 of a ピットストップ, closed by a ピットアウト. 本コースからピットエリアに入ることをピットイン、ピットエリアから本コースに合流することをピットアウトと言う。 We are currently missing a gloss for ピットアウト. I suspect, given the ngrams, that since ピットイン signals the beginning of a pitstop (and the "stopping" part specifically), it has taken over for ピットストップ in many places... |
