2023/01/16 10:00
古代,人の死は忌まわしいもとして、忌み嫌われてきたと言いたいです。
https://nativecamp.net/heync/question/20963

https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/en/忌まわしい/
〔胸の悪くなる〕disgusting, detestable;〔不吉な〕ominous
  Comments:
The kanji itself currently has "abhor" attached to it.

"abhorrent" is quite common:
https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/忌まわしい#abhorrent

abominable is also common.

"unpleasant" seems like quite an understatement. Does not appear in reverso (and there are many examples). Same for "disagreeable" (very mild).

"unsavory" likewise. "unsavory" is an actual attempt to downplay the severity of the term. 忌まわしい seems to be rather overtly severe

eow.alc.co.jp has a good list of terms; they are all severe, and "unsavory", "unpleasant", "disagreeable" do not appear on it.
https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=忌まわしい

+[rare] on [2]. Sense[2] does not appear in sankoku, and none of the glosses listed under [2] ever appear in reverso.
daijs give ~夢 as its example:

忌まわしい夢	67 ngrams

I'd say the absence from sankoku is telling.

for comparison to sense [1]:
忌まわしい記憶	7914
忌まわしい事件	7698
忌まわしい過去	7582
忌まわしい出来事	2574

daijs defines sense[2] using 不吉. We don't have "unlucky" on that term, I don't think it fits here either. Overly generic. "An ominous dream" works, "An unlucky dream" does not. There's something associated with revulsion even in sense[2], not just "good luck/bad luck", I think.

irritating + upsetting = exasperating

"exasperating" is *extremely* common on reverso.
https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/腹立たしい

Also appears as the #1 gloss here:
https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=腹立たしい

Some reverso hits for "maddening", also appears in ref above, also I just like it, since 腹立つ is "to get angry (mad)"

Replaced "irritating" with "infuriating". "irritating" doesn't appear in reverso, and seems like another case of understatement. infuriating feels maybe a bit strong, but does have reverso examples. Pushed it to the end.

"the Eijiro glossary should not be the sole source of references for a proposed entry, although it may be used as a supplementary reference for confirming meanings. This is because the glossary is a collection of Japanese-English pairs which have apparently been collected from translations. In a Japan Times article Daniel Morales described it as "a smorgasbord of reibun and definitions, some of which err on the side of slang, often delighting the expat community."

  Comments:
reordered kanji.
sanoku form is 忌ま忌ましい, oddly enough.

sanoku defines using 腹立たしい (irritating; aggravating; upsetting)

忌忌しい should be low enough for [sK], especially since 忌々しい implies it is a possibility anyway.

Our glosses do not appear in reverso. eow.alc glosses are illumuniting.
https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=いまいましい&ref=wl

This appears to be an informal extension of 忌まわしい("to grate on one's nerves"). "damned", "effing" (fucking), are given, along with "cotton-picking" and "consarned".
Reverso confirms this usage:
A bloody dead man tried to kill me... ("bloody", used in several entries)
Then when that darn levee broke ("darn")
Those darn student loan people start calling
How can I get hold of the ring? Devilish fix! (devilish)
忌々しいビデオを漏らすのを止めるというメッセージ <-> saying "Stop leaking my motherf*king videos",

Seems like a mild expletive expressing irritation. That makes "annoying" and "provoking" more of a definition than a gloss.

Some alternate suggestions: synonyms for "bloody":
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english-thesaurus/bloody
damned (slang)
flaming
fucking (taboo, slang)
bleeding
blooming (informal)
freaking (slang, mainly US)
rotten
blinking
confounded
ruddy
infernal (informal)
deuced
wretched
frigging (taboo, slang)

I threw a few of them into the "meanings" just to call attention to the issue. I'm not married to any particular terms. Again, for a considerably longer list of potential glosses:

See comments on 癪に障る, which appears to be largely synonymous, and has similar ngram counts.

Moved the English [exp] to the front (and reference suggests "get one one's nerves" is somewhat linked to the literal underlying etymology).

I'd suggest "to be irritating" over "to irritate one", which is somewhat awkward. "to be irritating to whoever is the possessor of 癇, which is 'oneself' by default".
の癇に障る	1244
彼女の癇に障る	34

母は落ち着いた声で言い返し、それが父の癇に障るのか、毎喧嘩ごとに家の何かが壊れます。

Not many reverso examples. One glosses as "abrasive" (e.g. personality), 癇に障る性格, which is interesting but not especially common.

Yoder therefore used 2008 statistics and noted that the 1,361,769 recorded youth pre-delinquency status offences far outnumbered the 134,415 penal code offences by young people (Yoder, 2011, p. 37; Hanzai Hakusho, 2009; Seishonen Hakusho3, 2009) and that pre-delinquency rates more than doubled between 1972 and 1983. The implication here is that all 1,361,769 pre-delinquency cases would result in a juvenile police record.

Lots of data, ぐ犯 orthography:
https://wellness-keijibengo.com/guhan/
  Comments:
I think that "虞犯" is perhaps more accurately "likely to commit a crime". If we "noun" this as "likelihood", then I would expect to be able to say 虞犯は20%, or 虞犯が高い。Those do not work.

The noun given in sankoku is おそれ. Thus, something like
[expl] concern(or fear) that someone is likely to commit a crime

I added, but then removed this in the end as it seemed redundant with what I arrived at for sense [2].

For sense[2], note that obvious noun searches like:
虞犯がある and 虞犯がない return next-to-nothing in a google search. So while this has the meaning if the [expl] above, it doesn't seem to be used as a standalone noun this way. Hence [adj-f] only on [2]. I'm not sure if there are examples/rationales I have not considered here...

Contrary to my original argument against "status offense" on 虞犯少年, 虞犯 by itself is very often glossed on reverso as "status offense". In fact, "虞犯" in the sense of "reason for admitting a minor into a juvenile training school", along with things like "larceny", is translated as "status offense" by the Ministry of Justice.

So, maybe "虞犯" could be considered a kind of "offense" (if not a criminal one), for which a juvenile can be forced into some kind of education/remediation system. And "status offender" was indeed fine on 虞犯少年. I suppose. At least, the Ministry of Justice seemed to be OK with the gloss.

The [xref] has explanatory power for both sense. I rather suspect that sense [1] was actually derived backwards from 虞犯少年. "status offense", as I noted in 虞犯少年, is not an exact equivalent, so the xref provides some clarity on what this actually means in Japanese. On the other hand for [2], 虞犯少年 is the actual [adj-f] usage, and "pre-delinquent" is also a term meriting additional information.

In addition to the moj ref, lots of additional reverso matches for this simple "status offense" sense:

These comments cover お別れ会, お別れの会, and 偲ぶ会.

Not to be overly personal (ok, overly personal) but my dog passed away unexpectedly this morning. I asked a doctor what to do by phone, and he asked me if I wanted an おわいかい or not (I misheard him). Figured it out though, so I've be digging around these terms.

Note: the related term 告別式 is similarly split into two senses.
(告別式 seems to usually appear with a more solumn, black, saying-farewell-to-the-deceased "funeral"-like sense )

Long story short:
お別れの会 = お別れ会, senses [1] and [2]
お別れ会[2] = 忍び会 (only one sense, nearly identical synonyms)
With maybe *one* exception: 偲ぶ会 doesn't seem especially applicable to pets (at least not commonly)
somewhat less frequent, セレモニー in place of 会
"deceased" is a tiny touchup since I am here. britannica confirms my intuition that this fits better with funerals.
google searches suggest the "funeral" usage [2] dominates [1] (especially with the の variant). Maybe they should be ordered in reverse.

=== End short version ===

I strongly think that a distinction between [1] and [2] adds clarity, even if [2] is essentially a euphemistic application of [1]. I think it makes the glosses and xrefs cleaner, and is unambiguous that this is a usable expression in both contexts. We've already kind-of agreed on the existence of [2], which I just pulled from お別れの会.

I'd never heard the term "memorial meeting". Seems fine, but far less common than "memorial service", and a bit less common than the friendlier "memorial gathering". All of these describe the same activity.

"gathering to remember a dead person" should be expanded to "pet" (ペットの別れ会). "a dead person" is necessary in some form, somewhere, because we have a huge number of "memorial service" entries (war memorials, natural disasters, etc.). Only a handful are individual funeral/death specific and it would be good to distinguish them. I said "person, pet, etc..." but I don't know if anything actually comes after pet. Perhaps it's just "person or pet".

home-going service/homegoing service are interesting glosses, and probably applicable in some cases, but they seem rather explicitly Christian

See notes on お別れ会. This appears the have both senses, but by comparison the non-death-related "parting ceremony" seems quite, quite uncommon.

I have only added the xref. Can't do much until/unless it is approved in some form. Will need to be aligned with however the xref is settled.

I think this needs to be split into two senses, both of which reference the respective sense on お別れ会. "farewell party" might even be [rare], hard to say definitively, but it sure doesn't pop up in searches without hunting for it. (It may be that の is inherently more formal, so leans toward the solemn use?)

More common than this form (ください variants, without keigo お, so sharing the same 安らかに眠 prefix as this term):
安らかにお眠りください 11894
安らかにお眠り下さい 6733
安らかに眠ってください 7414
安らかに眠って下さい 4138

This form:
安らかに眠れ	9740 <- imperative direct 眠れ

安らかに眠ってね	2197 Friendly imperative ってね
安らかに眠ってくれ	1899 Friendly imperative (step down from kudasai)

Here is an explicitly Christian usage ("went to heaven") with the friendly 眠ってね form.
(warning, young woman, sad post)
https://twitter.com/hoshina_mizuki/status/1131520280076070913

lots of pets get this form as well.

Explanation of differences and dangers careless mix/match of 安らかに眠れ and ご冥福をお祈りします. (I have no idea how offended any Japanese person would be in practice with screwing this up, but at the death of someone's loved on, it's probably worth attempting to handle this with care)
https://www.e-denpo.net/column/a045
冥福 is buddhist: そもそも「ご冥福」とは、仏教に基づいたお悔やみの言葉です。「冥」は死後の世界(冥土)、「福」は幸福のことを表し、「ご冥福」は故人の死後の幸せを指す言葉として使われています。
安らかに眠れ is christian: キリスト教の場合、...「安らかなお眠りをお祈り申し上げます」「平安をお祈り致します」「安らかな旅立ちになりますよう、心からお祈り申し上げます」

In the case of this aquarium seal, I guess the farewell reflects the religion of the commenter over the religion of the seal (we see both expressions):

2. クチャさん安らかにお眠り下さい🙏 天国からみんなの事見守って下さい。 Includes 天国, prayer hands emoji, and 安らかに
3. ご冥福をお祈りします
4. クチャさんのご冥福を心よりお祈り申し上げます。
5. 心より御冥福をお祈りします
  Comments:
use site:"twitter.com" "安らかにお眠り下さい" (or whatever) to find examples if you don't have twitter search. The pure "latin" form seems to mostly yield over references to the concept of RIP. All other forms seem to be actual fair-wells to people (or pets, etc.) who have died.

安らかに眠れ does seem to be the "pure" latin equivalent of RIP for ceremonial or marketing purposes. But it's really just a calque of the command "rest in peace", and *all* of the various Japanese command-form variations seem to exist. (って下さい、ってくれ、って、ってね), and several are more popular/practical than this one in daily use.

Also, the internet suggests to me that this term is Christian, and "ご冥福をお祈りします" is Buddhist (which makes it the "common" term only insomuch as Japan is not a Christian nation). Minimally adding [fld=christn] and [fld=buddh] may serve as some kind of warning that these are not strictly equivalent.

This also suggests that the entire gloss "Rest in peace" on ご冥福をお祈りします is perhaps unwise (though common), as it is essentially suggesting the wrong religion entirely. (how can "happiness in the next life" = "rest", I wondered). Certainly for a culture-modifying localization, "Rest in Piece" is a fine day-to-day equivalent if you're talking about characters in a film, but maybe not ideal if you're addressing a Christian in Japan. (And 安らかにお眠りください might not be great when addressing a Buddhist)

Essentially I think I'm agreeing with Robin's 2019 comment that picking the wrong term "would be a big error," but I think there is some religious nuance here, and that this term is "correct" for the (3%?) of the Christian population here. Double-checked, 1.5%.

One extra form (found on the twitter seal reference):
どうか安らかに	9055 (often ends at に)
どうか安らかにお眠り	2126 (but not always)
どうか安らかに眠って	1116
