joealvo

 Japanese
うかがい知る=to guess about something that's hidden behind/that lays behind what you can see/what you know
(Koujien) says:

I couldn't see what he was feeling inside because he was showing no expressions on his face.

reverso:
You can figure out the class of vegetarians from the twofold increase in the number of vegetarians over the past 10 years...
(also dekiru)

https://dict.line.me/enjadict/search?range=example&query=guess what
You can guess what the current situation of emergency medical service is like through [from] the results of this survey. →
  Comments:
Definitions are all about knowing an under-the-surface fact based on the information one is able to see (inference).

"to infer" is already baked into 窺う。 Reverso often glosses things like うかがい知ることができる as "able to guess" with the implication that the "guess" is correct. 知る may also be adding that nuance.

sankoku's example also uses the

proverb-encyclopedia gives a synonym of 察知, which we gloss as:
to sense; to infer; to gather; to pick up on; to get wind of; to perceive

These seem consistent with the many examples in reverso.

As a gloss, "understand" in particular seems to discard all sense of nuance. (I am sure there are situations it could be used, but it doesn't seem like a particularly good general choice).

The great majority of reverso examples (and there are a good number) are of the ことが出来る・できない structure

The volunteered hinative example also used this structure, as did the random examples I found when looking for evidence of "figure out".

"to see" , as in "are able to see, are unable to see..." is actually one of the most common reverso glosses. I'm sure my "to guess" parenthetical remark already doesn't look great. I'm not sure what I'd want to add "too see" to this list. Similar for "to tell", "they couldn't tell what he was thinking (because his displayed no outward signs")

Note: this gloss is copied from the xref, with "esp. wooden" removed, since that seems not to apply here. Also, pluralized "warning",

Pretty sure this is not a "bulletin board" (a permanent fixture to which recent bulletins are affixed as needed), and doesn't seem to be restricted to street corners either. "bulletin" without "board" might have been alright. (Note: I see there is an apparent consensus on a different meaning of "bulletin board" than I am accustomed to. I will make a different note at 立て札).

Image search returns bulletins of the "paper/fabric notice hanging from bamboo pole" variety. Not evidently even "boards" to begin with.

"roadside" is itself even arguably redundant. Where else is there to put a notice? (in spite of the preference for crossroads indicated by 十 in 辻 itself, it seems these can be set up anywhere. In modern times, 辻札 seems more to refer to the style/purpose of the sign than the particular placement).

Improvements in Employment of Women and the Elderly
[paragraph on women]

Moreover, Chart 2 also shows that employment of the elderly has been growing. However, in the case of the elderly, the share of non-regular employees has been rising. The reason is likely that many are hired as temporary or part-time workers after reaching retirement age. Because Japan's population is aging, this means that it is unlikely that the share of non-regular employees in employment as a whole will decrease. However, looking at employees between 15 and 64 years of age, the share of non-regular employees has been declining since around 2014.

  Comments:
Small note of little importance, the previous translation coincidentally ran into my 嘱託(社員) edit. The workers were probably "RE-hired after reaching (mandatory) retirement age".

And I found the original source.
https://www.boj.or.jp/en/about/press/koen_2019/ko190306a.htm

I was going to suggest that context probably made things clear. Instead, it looks like this is an official Japanese translation of a Japanese source document that dropped some (perhaps non-critical) nuances.

Add [vs,vi]

If it were me, I wouldn't have added the GG5 gloss of "reaching retirement age". It definitely works in some contexts, but this term doesn't mean "turned 65". It means "turned 65 and had to retire". In English, I feel like even after saying "After reaching retirement age...", you would *still* have to add "...she left the company (...and started a small business)".

Take this reverso translation:
これは定年退職後、嘱託や非常勤として雇われる高齢者が多いからだと思われます。
"The reason is likely that many are hired as temporary or part-time workers after reaching retirement age."

I feel like the translator lost a step. I think "after mandatory retirement" would have been clearer.

Also, you can "reach retirement age" without being employed. You definitely need a job to 定年退職. (One more reason why the previous translation ends up ambiguous).

Amanatsu (甘夏) or natsumikan (ナツミカン(夏蜜柑)) is a yellowish orange citrus hybrid fruit, a group of cultivars of Citrus natsudaidai, which were discovered in 1740 in the Yamaguchi prefecture of Japan.

Names
Amanatsu (甘夏) means "sweet summer" in Japanese. In Japan, the fruit is known as kawano natsu daidai (カワノナツダイダイ(川野夏橙)), but also colloquially the amanatsu, amanatsu daidai (甘夏橙), amanatsukan (甘夏柑), and amanatsu mikan (甘夏蜜柑(甘夏みかん))

  Comments:
If a consensus is reached, the entry on 甘夏蜜柑 should look exactly like this one. There is a very strong tie with the non-甘 variety as well.

See ngrams: "甘夏" is everywhere in grocery stores here, a later-season alternative to a 八朔 はっさく orange. This is the popular term that should probably be xref'd. I didn't find it especially sweet, in spite of the name... (it's apparently not so much "sweet" as "less sour than a natsumikan", which is known for being particularly sour)

We gloss 八朔 as
Hassaku orange (Citrus hassaku)

I see no reason to do anything differently here. This is principally a Japanese cultivar sold principally in Japan. Fruit & vegetable flavor profiles are not generally under our purview. If you google "amanatsu orange", you'll quite quickly get all the details you could ever want.

Glossed often as "watson pomelo" by old 和英辞典, this seems like a cruel conspiracy foisted on the Japanese, constantly writing amantsu(watson pomelo) as if anyone in the West had any idea what a "watson pomelo" was.

Good luck finding this name anywhere today. English wikipedia contains no explicit reference to such a thing, but an article on the "Arab Agricultural Revolution" has a footnote on historian Andrew Watson, saying:

"In support of his thesis, Watson charted the advance of seventeen food crops and one fiber crop that became important over a large area of the Mediterranean world during the first four centuries of Islamic rule (roughly the seventh through eleventh centuries C.E.)"[30] The food crops named by Watson were rice, sorghum, durum wheat, sugar cane, watermelon, aubergine (eggplant), spinach, artichoke, taro, sour orange (pomelo), lemon, lime, banana, plantain, mango, and coconut; the fibre was cotton."

so, there's a pomelo-named-after-Watson there.

Looks like the Japanese orange may have been marketed in India under the name "Watson Pomelo" in the 1940s and 50s:

Book search: 1948: Journal of Scientific and Industrial Research - Volume 7 - Page 82
Often under cultivation in the Punjab , the United Provinces , Central Provinces , and Madras under the name Watson pomelo . This is a cheap summer orange and may be valuable as a substitute for grapefruit . 24. C. nobilis Lour .

India again(10 years later, not going well):
Bombay (State) Department of Agriculture · 1958 · ‎Snippet view
As regards the effect of various root - stocks it is seen that Gajanimma , Sohyndong and Kodur Jamburi have been the most outstanding while Satkara and Watson Pomelo are not satisfactory . Atlantia has produced dwarf plants .

I can't find any real support for "Watson pomelo" outside of GG5. "Chinese citron" is an odd name for a Japanese fruit. Not common either. "Japanese summer orange" gets some use.
For 夏みかん (and 夏柑), I suggest "natsumikan (Citrus natsudaidai); Japanese summer orange".

Thanks to Brian for opening this one up. We have four entries for the various forms used for the Citrus natsudaidai. and they are obviously all over the place. The JEs also vary wildly. We should get one good set of glosses and use them for all the entries.
I'm proposing this as the gloss, and if it's approved I'll apply it to the other 3.
Note that we only use capital letters in plant, etc. names if they derive from a proper name. Hence "amanatsu".

https://yuukiyasai.jp/blogs/blog/4
Called 甘 because it is *less sour*
Sweetness
Availability
  Comments:
(not "sweet", I've eaten several)

To lead with a complication, "when Japanese people say 夏みかん, they are often referring to 甘夏"

So really, we've got 6~8 terms that are almost all the same thing...

===

See comments on 甘夏柑. "Amanatsu" seems generally capitalized on google results. in our 八朔 entry "Hassaku" is capitalized. I am not certain of the rationale.(was lowercase when I got here. If that was correct, maybe Hassaku should be changed)

This is a common orange in grocery stores right now (and for the last two months or so, as the hassaku are disappearing), with these specific kanji (vs. other forms). It seems odd to have a [food] tag, and be unable to use it on fruits and vegetables. I'm not sure what the motivation is there.

I don't think the [expl] is so necessary regardless. But "Chinese citron" is only slightly more meaningful than "watson pomelo". This isn't really adding information. Possibly of interest is that we will have 6 terms all identified as "Citrus natsudaidai", so it might be worth noting that the 甘い half of the terms are less-sour than the non-甘い half., and that they are available in different seasons. But as I noted in the opening, that's probably not entirely true colloquially. (I say less-sour, and not "sweet", because I've eaten them. I definitely found the name to be misleading, but now I see it is the 甘い version of something that is *truly* sour).

I have comments already on 針の穴から天覗く, but I ran into an article on this term specifically, and as you might imagine, the definitions are basically identical:

https://landofnu.com/2016/10/09/3250/
Forming opinions and making decisions on a topic based on one’s narrow views and pre-formed beliefs rather than any sort of breadth or depth of experience. Making judgments about big issues based on little information, often in a self-serving way. Having a view as narrow as what can be seen through the hollow stem of a reed after the pith has dried up.

This saying is the よ entry of the Edo iroha karuta set, and is mostly synonymous with the saying about the frog in the well.

https://www.gyosei.jp/service/catalog/hiruma_JHS_2019/HTML/index386.html
One peeps at the heavens through the pith of a reed.

The first reference here had a long description of this idiom. Had the rather nice-looking translation of 覗く as "peer at the ceiling". Not sure if that is any more [lit] than "look" was though.

look -> peek/peep
