Comments: | Not sure if this needs a separate entry. I think "roll" is "common", but "role" probably is not. sankoku: ロール. role 役。役割。 daijs: デジタル大辞泉デジタル大辞泉 ロール【role】 読み方:ろーる 役割。役目。任務。「—プレーイングゲーム」 A lot of use seems to be relatively modern coinages. 管理ロール is interesting. I think many of this are computer-system derived: https://helpx.adobe.com/jp/enterprise/using/admin-roles.html (Was looking for "role in a company", and while maybe you could use ロール for that, it seems like it would be somewhat odd/uncommon). I feel like a "this is what you should use instead xref" would be nice, so long as they are synonymous in the first place. between sankoku and daijs, 役, 役割, 役目 , 任務 are tossed out there. Not sure what, if anything, would be most appropriate. [rare] is an attempt to scare people into finding a different Japanese word. But I'm not so sure "rare" is actually fair though. Maybe too common for that. Hard to count occurrences of ロール = "role" that aren't part of a larger word. (role playing, etc). Well, I leave it to you. |

Comments: | Definitions are all about knowing an under-the-surface fact based on the information one is able to see (inference). "to infer" is already baked into 窺う。 Reverso often glosses things like うかがい知ることができる as "able to guess" with the implication that the "guess" is correct. 知る may also be adding that nuance. sankoku's example also uses the うかがい知ることができる structure (他人にはうかがい知ることができない). defn: 外に現れたことから、中の様子を知る。 proverb-encyclopedia gives a synonym of 察知, which we gloss as: to sense; to infer; to gather; to pick up on; to get wind of; to perceive These seem consistent with the many examples in reverso. As a gloss, "understand" in particular seems to discard all sense of nuance. (I am sure there are situations it could be used, but it doesn't seem like a particularly good general choice). The great majority of reverso examples (and there are a good number) are of the ことが出来る・できない structure https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/うかがい知る The volunteered hinative example also used this structure, as did the random examples I found when looking for evidence of "figure out". "to see" , as in "are able to see, are unable to see..." is actually one of the most common reverso glosses. I'm sure my "to guess" parenthetical remark already doesn't look great. I'm not sure what I'd want to add "too see" to this list. Similar for "to tell", "they couldn't tell what he was thinking (because his displayed no outward signs") |

Comments: | I suspect this evolved as a shorthand for the xref (and similar related terms). Far more than the not-so-common する usage, you can see from the n-grams on 定年後の再雇用 181396 that 定年後 means "after retirement/after having to retire", not "after reaching retirement age". Perhaps [1] should add (compulsory) as well. Looking at a number of reverso examples (which lean heavily toward "retirement age"), I don't think [1] and [2] are the same sense, related though they may be. [1] is a number. "retirement age is 60, 65, 70"... "retire before reaching retirement age". It's a noun with no straightforward する verb equivalent. [2] is the act of retiring/having been retired at a fixed age. |

Comments: | Was specifically looking for a term for "impractical". Wasn't sure about the entries here, and searched reverso and found this. Reverso is roughly 50/50 unrealistic/impractical. Since 現実的 is already "realistic, pragmatic", this would seems consistent. (not pragmatic = impractical) alc has a laundry list of possibilities. Might be worth taking a glance, though the seem to have grabbed every conceivable synonym for this term. But, "impractical" is on the list as: impractical(計画・考え・目標などが) "impractical goal" is exactly what I was looking for. Don't know if parentheticals are needed here or not , i.e. impractical (e.g. plan, goal, etc.) One of the glosses is "pie in the sky" :) That makes more sense for a E->J dictionary I think, but it does seem to back up the meaning I was going for. |

Comments: | I'm aligning [1] with 梵天王 and ブラフマー by adding the word "creator", which seems reasonable enough. After that, I am suggesting some important (and less-important)changes, but not doing anything on this myself.... I think this needs one more sense for the Buddhist god, whose role differs from the Hindu God. It may be the case that 梵天王 applies to one and not the other. It appears to *actually* be the case that ブラフマー refers only to the Hindu God, not the Buddhist God. (Buddhist god seems to *not* be a creator god... haven't studied in depth). Wikipedia in English and Japanese both have completely separate pages for the Hindu and Buddhist gods, with the proviso that in Japanese, there is a page for 梵天 (Buddhist), and a Page for ブラフマー(Hindu) which ends with a line stating "In Japan, ブラフマー is known as 梵天". sankoku has only three entries: 1. Indian god, 2. Buddhist god, 3. puffy thing at end of ear pick. Does not have an entry for ブラフマー. The ear pick thing is real. You can even get fluffy balls back from an image search of ぼんてん, so this may even be a bit broader than the earpick usage. Happy shopping: http://www.ltlt.co.jp/product/1158/ This website discusses the use of 梵天 for carpet color matching? and it brings up the dictionary definitions of 梵天 and 天竺 to speculate how this meaning might have come about... https://www.sincol-kys.co.jp/blog/carpet/2351/ I have not yet found any examples of [3], though I'm sure they must be out there. But sankoku doesn't list [3], and I suspect it might be [rare] or otherwise historical. To complicate matters, wikipedia verifies the ear pick thing *and* gives another orthography. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/耳掻き 梵天(凡天、ぼんてん) AND, earpick may not have the ぼんでん reading. (sankoku doesn't give ぼんでん at all for any of this, ぼんてん image search returns fluffy balls, ぼんでん returns a Hindu/Buddhist god). |

However, in the case of the elderly, the share of non-regular employees has been rising. The reason is likely that many are hired as temporary or part-time workers after reaching retirement age. Because Japan's population is aging, this means that it is unlikely that the share of non-regular employees in employment as a whole will decrease. However, looking at employees between 15 and 64 years of age, the share of non-regular employees has been declining since around 2014. また、同じ図2に見るように、高齢者の雇用も伸びています。ただし、高齢者の場合は、非正規の割合が上昇しています。これは定年退職後、嘱託や非常勤として雇われる高齢者が多いからだと思われます。日本は高齢化が進んでいる訳ですから、このことは、雇用全体として非正規の割合が低下することが難しいということを意味します。しかし、15-64歳までの雇用者を見れば、2014年頃から、非正規の割合が低下しています。 |
Comments: | Small note of little importance, the previous translation coincidentally ran into my 嘱託(社員) edit. The workers were probably "RE-hired after reaching (mandatory) retirement age". And I found the original source. https://www.boj.or.jp/en/about/press/koen_2019/ko190306a.htm I was going to suggest that context probably made things clear. Instead, it looks like this is an official Japanese translation of a Japanese source document that dropped some (perhaps non-critical) nuances. |

Comments: | Add [vs,vi] If it were me, I wouldn't have added the GG5 gloss of "reaching retirement age". It definitely works in some contexts, but this term doesn't mean "turned 65". It means "turned 65 and had to retire". In English, I feel like even after saying "After reaching retirement age...", you would *still* have to add "...she left the company (...and started a small business)". Take this reverso translation: これは定年退職後、嘱託や非常勤として雇われる高齢者が多いからだと思われます。 "The reason is likely that many are hired as temporary or part-time workers after reaching retirement age." I feel like the translator lost a step. I think "after mandatory retirement" would have been clearer. Also, you can "reach retirement age" without being employed. You definitely need a job to 定年退職. (One more reason why the previous translation ends up ambiguous). |

Refs: | I have comments already on 針の穴から天覗く, but I ran into an article on this term specifically, and as you might imagine, the definitions are basically identical: https://landofnu.com/2016/10/09/3250/ Forming opinions and making decisions on a topic based on one’s narrow views and pre-formed beliefs rather than any sort of breadth or depth of experience. Making judgments about big issues based on little information, often in a self-serving way. Having a view as narrow as what can be seen through the hollow stem of a reed after the pith has dried up. This saying is the よ entry of the Edo iroha karuta set, and is mostly synonymous with the saying about the frog in the well. https://www.gyosei.jp/service/catalog/hiruma_JHS_2019/HTML/index386.html One peeps at the heavens through the pith of a reed. |
Comments: | The first reference here had a long description of this idiom. Had the rather nice-looking translation of 覗く as "peer at the ceiling". Not sure if that is any more [lit] than "look" was though. look -> peek/peep Also, since [lit], adding a term for 髄. peep/peek matches: 針の穴から天覗く 針の穴から天を覗く 鍵の穴から天を覗く |

Comments: | Aligning... ? I hate to discard information, but ... I think all of the following are roughly the same in meaning: 針の穴から天覗く <-- This entry to be like a frog in a well; to make (faulty) assumptions based on one's limited understanding of something; 針の穴から天を覗く to have a narrow view of things 鍵の穴から天を覗く to have a narrow view of things 葦の髄から天井を覗く to have a narrow view of things 管を以て天を窺う to have a narrow view of things If any of these expressions was common, I'd probably feel differently. All of these are pretty my trivia, and their meanings are more-or-less comprehensible from their literal glosses. Compare: 井の中の蛙 - 89167 "synonym" 針の穴から天覗く 93 "to make (faulty) assumptions based one one's limited understanding of something" seems like a literal translation of the daijs definition. daijs also gives similar definitions for all of the other terms above. Wording varies slightly, but I can't imaging the nuances are actually different. As an alternative to simplifying this gloss, we could complicate all of the other glosses. Seemed odd in particular to have the "frog" gloss here, which I don't think is particularly common in everyday English. (If it were, we wouldn't need a separate gloss on 井の中の蛙, "person who is ignorant of the real world"). It is certainly used in Japanese references to define the term, however, perhaps that's where it came from... https://thesaurus.weblio.jp/content/針の穴から天を覗く For a [lit] gloss especially, not sure why 覗く would be glossed as "look". 針の穴から天を覗く already uses "peek". aligning this as well. (also "the sky" vs. "the skies"). |
