Proposing that the sporting sense be split. The JEs roll the meanings together but the kokugos split, which I think is appropriate.
I'll reindex the sentences if this is approved. Some need the English tweaking, e.g. "The boy ran and ran toward the goal. "

目標 (ゴール) とは達成可能な成果であり、一般的に広範かつ長期的なものです。一方、目的 (オブジェクティブ) とは全体的な目的を達成するために必要な、測定可能な行動を定義するものです。
  Comments:
I think there should be a distinct sense here for 目標. As in English, I think it stands fairly independently of the sports analogy.

As katakana, my gut feeling is that only gloss should be "goal" (and not the laundry-list of synonyms contained on 目標 and 目的). The xref can do the leg-work of providing synonyms.

The point of the entry is to indicate that "yes, the Japanese do use ゴール with this meaning". I'm writing a letter in Japanese right now, and was considering using the term. I went to jisho.org to confirm it was acceptable, but the sense was missing. The conclusion would be "oh, I guess Japanese people don't use it this way". I still thought it was legitimate though, so I did a few extra searches and made this edit.

Given the ngrams, I think I will still not use it, in favor of one of the more common xrefs :)

I originally xref'd 目標 and 目的, even though I know we dislike multiple xrefs. However, sankoku gives 目標, and the random "goal-vs-objective" explicitly aligns ゴール with 目標 in contrast with 目的=objective. Still quite subtle, but an interesting observation nonetheless. Seems like they are saying that 全体的な目的 = 目標 anyway...

I waffled on "i.e. objective" "i.e. target" because of the reference article. But ultimately "objective" seems like the most readily comprehensible term with zero surrounding context.

I don't feel overly passionate about any of my choices, except that [2] should be a sense.

While the ngrams make it almost look like a 'blip', the Englishification of Japanese marches on, and sense [2] seems a bit more popular to me today than it might have been even a decade ago when the stats were collected.

Not sure if this needs a separate entry. I think "roll" is "common", but "role" probably is not.

sankoku:
ロール. role 役。役割。

daijs:

デジタル大辞泉デジタル大辞泉
ロール【role】
読み方:ろーる
役割。役目。任務。「—プレーイングゲーム」

A lot of use seems to be relatively modern coinages. 管理ロール is interesting. I think many of this are computer-system derived:
https://helpx.adobe.com/jp/enterprise/using/admin-roles.html

(Was looking for "role in a company", and while maybe you could use ロール for that, it seems like it would be somewhat odd/uncommon).

I feel like a "this is what you should use instead xref" would be nice, so long as they are synonymous in the first place. between sankoku and daijs, 役, 役割, 役目 , 任務 are tossed out there. Not sure what, if anything, would be most appropriate.

[rare] is an attempt to scare people into finding a different Japanese word. But I'm not so sure "rare" is actually fair though. Maybe too common for that. Hard to count occurrences of ロール = "role" that aren't part of a larger word. (role playing, etc).

Well, I leave it to you.

Was specifically looking for a term for "impractical". Wasn't sure about the entries here, and searched reverso and found this.

Reverso is roughly 50/50 unrealistic/impractical. Since 現実的 is already "realistic, pragmatic", this would seems consistent. (not pragmatic = impractical)

alc has a laundry list of possibilities. Might be worth taking a glance, though the seem to have grabbed every conceivable synonym for this term. But, "impractical" is on the list as:
impractical(計画・考え・目標などが)

"impractical goal" is exactly what I was looking for. Don't know if parentheticals are needed here or not , i.e.
impractical (e.g. plan, goal, etc.)

One of the glosses is "pie in the sky" :) That makes more sense for a E->J dictionary I think, but it does seem to back up the meaning I was going for.

天皇 also undergoes this てんおう→てんのう transformation.

梵天	75809	98.4%
梵天王	1261	1.6%

This is not exactly [rare] on its own, but certainly an uncommon variant. With the main entry juxtaposed with such a broad assortment of weird items, I wondered about the importance of the 王 suffix. Turns out, 王 is not often used. On balance, I feel like marking [rare] is the best way to say "don't use this, just use 梵天", but maybe the ngrams are too high for that...

For maintenance purposes (I'm going to add some comments on the xref), I think the xref is also useful. This entry may need some additional changes with respect to the Buddhist version of this God.

I think the proposed split was a three-way split:
黄葉 [こうよう] leaves turning yellow in the autumn; yellow leaves
紅葉 [こうよう] leaves turning red in the autumn; red leaves
紅葉;黄葉 [もみじ] [1] autumn colours [2] maple [3] layered garments [4] venison
it seems prudent to split out the two こうよう entries, not vice versa

  Comments:
I'm aligning [1] with 梵天王 and ブラフマー by adding the word "creator", which seems reasonable enough.

After that, I am suggesting some important (and less-important)changes, but not doing anything on this myself....

I think this needs one more sense for the Buddhist god, whose role differs from the Hindu God. It may be the case that 梵天王 applies to one and not the other. It appears to *actually* be the case that ブラフマー refers only to the Hindu God, not the Buddhist God. (Buddhist god seems to *not* be a creator god... haven't studied in depth).

Wikipedia in English and Japanese both have completely separate pages for the Hindu and Buddhist gods, with the proviso that in Japanese, there is a page for 梵天 (Buddhist), and a Page for ブラフマー(Hindu) which ends with a line stating "In Japan, ブラフマー is known as 梵天".

sankoku has only three entries: 1. Indian god, 2. Buddhist god, 3. puffy thing at end of ear pick. Does not have an entry for ブラフマー.

The ear pick thing is real. You can even get fluffy balls back from an image search of ぼんてん, so this may even be a bit broader than the earpick usage. Happy shopping:
http://www.ltlt.co.jp/product/1158/
This website discusses the use of 梵天 for carpet color matching? and it brings up the dictionary definitions of 梵天 and 天竺 to speculate how this meaning might have come about...
https://www.sincol-kys.co.jp/blog/carpet/2351/

I have not yet found any examples of [3], though I'm sure they must be out there. But sankoku doesn't list [3], and I suspect it might be [rare] or otherwise historical.

To complicate matters, wikipedia verifies the ear pick thing *and* gives another orthography.
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/耳掻き
梵天(凡天、ぼんてん)

AND, earpick may not have the ぼんでん reading. (sankoku doesn't give ぼんでん at all for any of this, ぼんてん image search returns fluffy balls, ぼんでん returns a Hindu/Buddhist god).

(Gives only しかにく as a reading)
  Comments:
* Remove しかにく reading + restriction – there’s already a separate 鹿肉(しかにく) entry.
* Add a [see] link instead

This is messy situation, because there are two readings (かのしし、しかにく), two spellings (鹿、鹿肉), and two meanings (deer, deer meat) (hence 8 possible combinations), and they don’t line up in a simple way.

The current situation is wrong:
* firstly b/c it has (鹿肉/しかにく/deer meat) in two places (this entry and a separate entry with just that),
* secondly b/c I don’t think 鹿 (by itself) is read as しかにく (so it’s missing a restriction)

The options are either:
* One consolidated entry – delete the (鹿肉/しかにく/deer meat) entry, add a restriction so しかにく is restricted to 鹿肉
* Two separate entries – a かのしし entry (2 spellings, 2 meanings) and a しかにく entry (1 spelling, 1 meaning), and no restrictions

I think it’s clearer with two separate entries (hence why I’m suggesting that):
* 鹿肉/しかにく/deer meat is a easy word, and what you would expect when seeing it (admittedly, 湯桶読み), so it should have a clear entry (for usability).
* かのしし seems really old-fashioned or dialectical
* There is a shared 鹿肉/?/deer meat sense, which is the root of the issues – a link relates these simply
It’s clear enough if these are separate, but gets really messy if one tries to put them together.
Do this sound sane?
