Comments: | Came for the kanji stats on [rK][sK]. (I am also suspicious about this being [news1] because this is *such* a common name. But it's still a fairly common word, so whatever I suppose...) Can't really compare the bare term because it's a common name. So I looked for some collocations. sankoku gives 並木, daijs gives only 並木. only nikk lists 並樹, which feels like a historic form. Yourei has 50 actual results with 並樹, so it exists. 73 examples of 並み木. 4,338 examples of 並木。 And yourei, if my gut feeling isn't off, seems a bit overrepresented with old text (for copyright reasons I imagine). On twitter, 並み木の下 has ~10 matches in the history of twitter. 樹木の下 actually gets a hit ~every other day. 並木の下 gets ~10 hits/day. Based on the somewhat surprising twitter result, I'd guess I'd lean [rK] for 並樹. Might be being used for "poetic" effect. Should probably be visible in a result if searched for. 並み木 feels like a perfect [sK] candidate. Rare, nonstandard only in furigana, shouldn't be learned, should be searchable... Wouldn't hate it though if 並樹 were also [sK]. Since I am here, also pluralized "roadside trees". sankoku: 通りの両がわに並べて植えた木. I don't think 並ぶ can apply to *one* tree. Actually specifies that both sides of the road must be planted. I think you'd have to contort yourself to point at one roadside tree, and say "that one tree there is a 並木". This ref also had it pluralized: 研究社 新和英中辞典での「並木」の英訳 なみき 並木 a row of trees roadside trees. |

Incontrovertible typo/mixup example: https://twitter.com/coin_order/status/1646901570817384448 Open question as to whether "紅葉樹" is actually a "word" (meaning "a tree whose leaves change color in autumn", or something like that). Given that "broad leafed trees" are the kinds of trees that generally change color in the fall, this confusion might have a legitimate basis. Didn't find in any kokugos though. |

Comments: | Changing xref to the most-common katakana form. Happy to keep the kanji/japanese term as the nexus for all the others, although one could argue on the numbers that ライフジャケット should have this role. Amazon heading is: 船検用品 ライフジャケット・フローティングベスト (that is the category you will land in if you search for 救命胴衣) Interesting that wikipedia doesn't know about フローティングベスト (not just the life vest article, it appears nowhere). All searches on Mercari return what you'd expect, except that "フローティングベスト" seems to lean toward "tactical"/"utility"/"sportsman"-looking vests. Perhaps fisherman focused. |

Comments: | changed to [adj-f] If this is anything like 回転式, this is an adjectival prefix(輪胴式拳銃、 not a whole lot of other applications.) 輪胴式 appears in *5* wikipedia entries: 米国で発明されたコルト・パタスン五連発の輪胴式」 回転式拳銃の輪胴式弾倉(シリンダー) 8発装填している輪胴式グレネードランチャー 古留止社製輪胴式連発短筒 フレーム左側に輪胴式弾倉(シリンダー) all adj-f, except one noun. We don't have an entry for 回転式, but this is not the common way to identify the mechanism used in a revolver, so I am just going to point at the 回転式拳銃 entry because that is what is available. (回転式 is far more versatile than guns, of course) |

|
Comments: | I suggest starting with a quoted image search for "フローティングベスト" It looks like one of these things was indeed not like the others. "buoyancy aid" is the magic phrase for legal purposes, but if you look at the collins/wikipedia definition of "buoyancy aid"(often foam-filled/targeted at kayakers), "floating vest" is even weaker than that (usually targeted at on-land/river fisherman). Even though it does seem that some Japanese people have internalized "フローティングベスト" as a synonym for "life jacket", for the actual sake of safety (this gloss may end up in automatic translation tools), I strongly suggest that "life jacket" not be given as a direct gloss, and that we allow an unusually long explanation/note. xref to "life jacket" (or the note) should be enough to help a translator if they want to manually select that term. Related term ゲームベスト ("game" as in "hunting wildlife", I think ). You can search this on amazon/google-images, and your results will look similar and include フローティングベスト in many results. ngrams フローティングベスト 10086 59.9% ゲームベスト 6753 40.1% As of 2018ish (as I read) it became a legal requirement to wear a life jacket when on the water. Legal life jackets must have the "sakura mark". Two websites discussing フローティングベスト, plus generic product listings (one amazon example above), emphasize that フローティングベスト do *not* generally carry this certification or meet the "legal definition" of a life jacket. They are most suitable for fishing *near* water, they generally are generally buoyant (you'll float better with them than without them if you don't fill your utility pockets with too many lead fishing weights), and they may have gas-powered internal inflation devices for emergency(or not). They are a fishing accessory that is "better than the alternative of random clothing", but are not "a life jacket". (Thus, finally, the answer to my question: "why isn't this term on wikipedia?"). Scroll down on this page, and you'll get all of the fishing marketing with pretty pictures. It's onshore (or off-boat) fishing, maybe wading into a river, or standing near some water where accidentally falling in might be a concern. https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B08XXF572C/ Amazon's search category is: ライフジャケット・フローティングベスト At first I thought these were common terms for "the same thing". My new interpretation is that they are partially-overlapping product categories that have been lumped together for marketing purposes (and/or user convenience). If the category were ライフジャケット, the very-popular "floating vests" should not be displayed. Amazon includes a search filter: ライフジャケットタイプ []タイプ IV []タイプ II []タイプ III Check any of the boxes, and the "floating vests" all disappear. Copying from the last reference for emphasis "Not classed as a lifejacket because it doesn't turn you into the upright position once in the water, however buoyancy aids are recommended for good swimmers in sheltered waters where help is close at hand." |

Comments: | Just for fun, I asked ChatGPT what this yoji means. It responded: --- The Japanese term 急功近利 (kyūkōkinkuri) can be translated to "haste makes waste" or "short-term gain, long-term loss" in English. It is a proverbial expression that warns against seeking quick and easy solutions, shortcuts, or profits that may lead to negative consequences in the future. The term emphasizes the importance of taking a long-term perspective, working diligently, and making sound, well-informed decisions that consider the potential consequences and benefits over time. --- Interesting. |
