Several years ago we dropped the 行ける form from the いける entry (only GG5 had it). It's been pointed out to me that none of the JEs or kokugos has 行けない in their いけない entries. Should we drop it from here (and also from 行けません)?
An issue would be the reindexing of the ~600 sentences.

Capitol Hill is a neighborhood (and an actual hill) in Washington, D. C. at the summit of which sits the United States Capitol. Much in the same way that the US media will refer to executive branch of the US Government simply as "the Whitehouse," often the legislative branch is colloquially referred to as "Capitol Hill" since the collective offices of the various members of the House and Senate as well as the Capitol itself are located there.

Apparently たぐ.い was added to the 常用 list in 2010. Before that, 類 only had one reading on the list (音: るい).

This chiebukoro user saw 類い written in a recently-published novel written by a famous author. Then after using 類い at work, they were told by a work colleague that 類い is incorrect because it's written as 類 in kojien.

The impression that I get is that 類 is the most commonly used form, but the government is trying to promote 類い in official writing due to the ambiguity with るい. It seems this style hasn't yet entirely caught on, however.

Came here to "correct" what I thought was an oversight, and saw that this was discussed and decided on deliberately. If you see this term on jisho.org, it looks like:
(crime of) rape; criminal assault Law ("Law" in gray).

While the goal of "people will infer sexual connotations from the first term" is understandable, [law] appears affixed to the second term. It's possible to read this as "colloquially used for [rape], but as a legal matter this is the general term for any criminal assault".

If you search "criminal assault" in jmdict, this is currently the *only* matching entry, which also increases the chance of misunderstanding.

I don't agree that "criminal assault" is limited to an understood euphemistic reference for rape. If you'd asked me out of the blue, "what is criminal assault", I would have said "someone attacks/injures another in a fight and got arrested/charged." "rape" would not have entered my mind. If you say "the woman was criminally assaulted by the male perpetrator", inferences would obviously be made. But "charged with criminal assault" is also what you'll get if one man punches another in a bar fight.

I was going to just insert "sexual" in the middle of "criminal assault", but I think Tom's point from 2016 was well made. From a legal perspective "rape" in English (as far as I can see) requires penetration, as does the legal term 強姦罪. "Sexual assault" does not. I don't see the value of downgrading the term as a gloss. (people can do that on their own if they want)

And given that 強姦罪 *requires* penetration, "criminal assault" seems like a massive understatement. I don't know what the other J-E dictionary motivations was here. If eijiro and ルミナス exclusively glossed this as "criminal assault", that seems way off, and it's hard to imagine a reason other than not wanting to include sensitive English vocabulary in their dictionary.

For comparison, the jmdictdb entries for レイプ and 強姦 are already glossed:
レイプ rape; sexual assault
強姦 rape; sexual assault

In this case, as a matter of [law], this would appear to need to be

*** criminal sexual assault (including penetration)

I'm not advocating for or against such a gloss. That's a matter of everyone's sensibilities.

The value of including "criminal assault" (especially when we don't even have entry in jmdictdb for the actual legal equivalent), seems to me to be outweighed by the more serious issues attached to this term. Translating 強姦罪 as "criminal assault" loses a whole lot of information, and blindly translating "criminal assault" as 強姦罪 could represent a massive error in modern use.

It comes from a proverb in Thomas More’s “Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation” (1534) which says, “A drowning man will clutch at straws.” It is said that the “straw” in this case refers to the sort of thin reeds that grow by the side of a river.
  Comments:
It was odd to see such a long-form idiom with kanji ranked at the bottom. Full kanji form is prevalent on twitter, supported by n-grams.

Seems like a bit of a fools errand to catalogue all combinations of
溺れ・おぼれ
もの・者
藁・わら・ワラ
掴む・つかむ
(24 combinations, all probably in use somewhere). Likewise, I don't know about displaying any particular alternate surface form. *In particular*, for learners をも掴む would suffer by being written in kana, since をも is so unusual, and the "verb" would probably be guessed as もつかむ. (I had this problem myself, even with the kanji... I tried to figure out why もつかむ wasn't in the dictionary anywhere). I added some [sK] forms that are more popular than the ones here, and I mostly just pulled them out of a hat. There are surely even more.

Japanese also has the old form(をも掴む) /modern-form (にも縋る) dichotomy, so I felt ok replacing the English gloss with what appears to be the most common structure. (clutch).

I didn't associate the English gloss with "grasping at straws", I had no idea this was an English idiom, or that it was the source of "grasping at straws".
I thought this was a piece of ancient East-Asian wisdom. Couldn't find a Japanese etymology, I think it's suspected to be a calque from English, but unknown.

In place of a [lit] gloss, I think the xref helps clears up a lot.

Proverbs 13:20 New Century Version (NCV)
Spend time with the wise and you will become wise, but the friends of fools will suffer.

https://yoji-jukugo.com/近朱必赤/#:~:text=人は交わる相手によって,必ず赤くなる」という意味。

http://www.nishikie.com/stories/TNS-1054-6_confessions_of_evil.html
Proverb (allegory) is modified by 朱(しゆ)に交(まぢ)ハれバ赤(あか)くなる (shiyu ni madjihareba akaku naru) -- which today would be written 朱に交われば赤くなる (Shu ni majiwareba akaku naru) -- meaning "when mixing (mingling, associating) with vermilion, one becomes red" -- in other words, one is inspired to be good or evil according to the friends or company one keeps.

The Japanese proverb reflects part of the the Chinese expression 近朱者赤、近墨者黒 (jìn zhū zhĕ chì, jìn mò zhĕ hēi) -- meaning "those tho get close to cinnabar [China] ink become red, [while] those who get close to soot [India] ink become black" -- attributed to the poet Fu Hsuan (傅玄, Fu Xuan, 217-278) -- among other expressions, like 近墨必緇、近朱必赤.
  Comments:
One reason I started looking at this was because of the dated nature of the gloss. I wasn't familiar with it (doesn't mean it's bad or wrong, of course), so it didn't seem to clarify the meaning for me. I actually internalized the "bad" reading from the outset, assuming that red=bad (as in 朱を入れる - to make a correction).

Googling around I see this is a bible verse. I ran into the "New Century Version" translation, and it seems a bit more accessible. (linked reference has various translations)

"Spend time with the wise and you will become wise, but the friends of fools will suffer."

What do you think? I don't know that any of the various formulations are extremely commonly known, so modern grammar seems preferable to me. For what it's worth, I told a 50 year old friend about the "lay down with dogs" idiom, which is apparently also biblical, and he wasn't familiar with it.

I search backwards for the longer Chinese expression referencing both vermillion and soot (black), and found what I think is a better literal gloss.

Also, "influenced by one's environment" is maybe not as specific as it could be (being overshadowed by a lot of talented people might impact someone negatively, for example, but that would be contrary to this idiom).

That's a good catch... I think I was influenced by some of the older glosses that float around, like "he who touches pitch shall be defiled therewith" and "one rotten apple spoils the barrel", and happened to stumble into a Japanese writeup that confirmed what I expected to hear.

"you are the company you keep" is, I think, usually used judgmentally, and about the quality of one's character (not financial or academic success, etc., or professional sports performance, as I saw in one post).

朱に交われば赤くなる seems to be a lot more, general in observing that people will be influenced by the environment they are placed it. (there may also be a judgemental after-the-fast usage, but it's certainly not the only usage).

"with wolves", like the older, dropped "pitch" gloss, seems far too negative for how this is used in practice... I might suggest just reverting to where things were, not sure I have anything to add from that. Will think about it

Some different gloss suggestions...

You could drop the dogs/flees gloss and just leave "you are the company you keep". I think it's basically a perfect match. (Especially if you want to preserve the theoretical ambiguity that it could be used in a positive sense).

In reply to Marcus's comments from 2020, I suspect the 国語辞典 has been lazy with discussing the nuance.
As with this English saying, in theory it means "if you spend time with bad people, you'll get bad habits, if you spend time with good people, you'll get good habits".

But it's only really used as a cautionary admonition towards people who are doing bad things. (See reference note, ふつう、悪い意味の時に使う. Also, all example sentences in reference are negative)

We rarely say "you are the company the company you keep" of people who spend all their time working with charities and volunteer groups.

==== Note for curious ===
Apparently from a longer Chinese saying, same meaning - that mixed with black ink turns black, that mixed with vermillion turns red. What I read wasn't apparent about whether red and black were inherently good or bad - more just the notion that your surroundings rub off on you.

A total protein (TP) assay is a measurement of the proteins found in plasma (the liquid portion of the blood). The majority of plasma proteins are produced by the liver (Sirois, 2015).
  Comments:
It may have been adequate to just remove "whole protein". Just noticed this was added from a blood test in 2021, "whole protein" probably should just not have been here.

If you google "whole protein" (quoted) and "総蛋白", you get dictionary results. If "total protein", a landslide of results.

"Complete protein" also falls inside of [med], so this doesn't help disambiguate that term.

I *thought* this was a reference to "complete protein", based on the "whole protein" gloss. Japan actually barely has a word for this... 完全なタンパク質 works if necessary, or タンパク質の完全なソース, but it doesn't have a wikipedia page or show up in any advertising copy like "complete protein" (a protein which provides all amino acids needed by humans) would be.

Clone of 藁にもすがる
Mirrors the original dated grammar/vocab, maybe 50% as common as the modern equivalent (にも縋る)(very common). Could also clone 藁にも縋る思いで, which has its own entry

WWW hits and some of those tweets seem to show it is often used in video games, although many are for 重複カウントなし or エンカウントなし. Perhaps its use at work was drawing on that. I suspect this needs broadening somewhat with some more investigation. Literally it's just "without count(ing)".

Minimal entry to disambiguate 総蛋白 from "complete protein"

Considered adding "TP" as a gloss. This is an internationally recognized marker that might appear on a blood test result, but I don't see those elsewhere here, so didn't.

There are already a bunch of these 血清* terms, including 血清アルブミン, which is one component of this value. (the other being 血清グロブリン, serum globulin, which we don't have).
