So, for Japanese people, it is nostalgic. English conversation of same: https://www.reddit.com/r/VirtualYoutubers/comments/qa3ost/kaichou_and_souchou_side_to_side_comparison_art/ Kumichou is the title used for Yakuza leaders and in rare cases construction company presidents Souchou is for Bosozoku leaders and University headmasters, also fit for Yakuza leaders I think one difference that might matter is identifying as Kumichou is bit of a self admission of conspiring in some organized crime, while Souchou can be largely clean, like if you’re just busting streets through red lights in a horde of straight pipes, that’s bunch of misdemeanors but not felonies. 総長 (sou chou) - literally, overall in charge. This term depends heavily on context. 事務総長 (ji mu sou chou) refers to Secretary-General, or the person who is in charge of all admin affairs (事務) within a political party. 総長 in kson's case refers to the head of a biker gang/yakuza gang. |
|
Comments: | I suspect you'll disagree with [n-suf] on [2]. It certainly isn't terribly productive, but there are a handful of terms. I would suggest that if [2] is not [n-f], it maybe doesn't warrant an entry at all... I don't get the impression that it is used without the remainder of its title (otherwise it would mean "president"). There is a central meaning - leader over a group of things which have their own leadership, "head of a chain of command". In the university case (vs. replaced "college"), there are many colleges under the 総長 president. In the case of secretary general, chief-of-staff, etc., it's the head of a chain of command. Apparently for the biker gang, it used to be that there were many little gangs, and the 総長 was head of a group of gangs. But the meaning became generalized to the leader of individual groups. Possibly dated (~80s nostalgia?) Why am I editing this? There is one of these "VTubers" who goes by ksonSouchou, and people with even a smattering of Japanese ability have been working extra hard to decipher given its lack of dictionary coverage. "Secretary general", and "president of university" definitely were not the image she was trying to evoke. [3] is in sankoku, so it seems reasonable to add. Aligning [1] with 大学学長. Equivalent to the "head position" at a university. Decided against adding "provost" from 学長, though this may be an option (in the U.K. the provost is the president, but in the U.S. the provost is under the president... hmmm). I have to learn English to edit these... "Chancellor" if this is a working position, "Vice-chancellor" if the title of "Chancellor" is held as a ceremonial position where the vice-chancellor actually does the work. I think [2] and [1] are their own sense (or, at least, it makes them easier to handle as separate senses with xrefs). There is no "good" gloss for [2] on its own. 総長 does not generally stand alone with the meaning "secretary general". reverso for secretary general gives 事務総長 everywhere. daijs says 総長 could essentially abbreviate *any* of the 〇〇総長 possibilities, but again, 総長 does not generally appear unadorned. If you want to write "secretary general" you should use 事務総長(or 事務局長). ejje.weblio doesn't even offer a gloss for 総長 by itself (other than university president). It's all compounds. Same with eow.acl. There are many examples, but anything that is only 総長 is translated as "president". https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=総長 Not sure about the xref to 2852943 (or whether one is warranted in reverse). I get the feeling that 学長 総長 is a matter of administrative and historical preference (like chancellor, president, provost) that is maybe not readily meaningful to the general public. |

Refs: | The refs are inconsistent about whether the first sense is [vi] or [vt]. Iwakoku and sankoku have it tagged as both. Marcus commented on GitHub: >> I think hiding away the type of rare or obscure kanji that are still included in one or two kokugos with [sK] rather than tagging them as [rK] can lead to confusion This seems to be one such entry. I don't think there are too many others. In addition to meikyo, "胎む" is also recorded in kanjipedia and gendai reikai. I don't think there's a problem with making it [rK]. You can find even more kanji forms (胚む・娠む・姙む・肧む) for this word if you look through various kanwas. I think we have to draw a line somewhere. |

Comments: | yourei examples (there are 70) are all about branches (of trees), leaves, parts of plants, antlers of deer, human bones, and other biological structures. Wikipedia searches produce similar. Never heard the word "furcate" (bifurcate of course I know), but as a technical term it seems correct... In lieu of examples (e.g. of antlers, tree branches, leaf structures...), tagged [bot] and [biol]. "叉状研歯" will get you images of Joumon-man, with front teeth filed to three points. "dichotomous" seems overly precise, "two" does not seem to be implied. (This term should probably not be used in most places someone might use dichotomous in English, so I think it should either be removed or clarified. Does not, for example, seem to apply to classification systems, or black-and-white/either-or issues). |

Comments: | Statistically 参謀総長 vs 参謀長 does not appear to be that overwhelming(perhaps because the U.S. military is so prolofic). On wikipedia "chief of the general staff" does seem to be the prevailing translation in general military articles (outside of the U.S. military chief of staff). I don't think "chief of the general staff" is well understood by laymen in the U.S.(which is a roundabout way of saying "I didn't understand it"), and in Japanese this terms seems like ordinary terminology. For a U.S. audience, I would probably always gloss as "chief of staff" outside of a specialized context. Maybe my intuition is based on U.S. usage. If you check the wiki page below, there are 50+ nations using "chief of the general staff", but the U.S. stands out as an exception. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_of_the_General_Staff U.S.: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff |

Comments: | Not sure which of these, if any, get capitalized as official titles. (The *full* title for the U.S. position is アメリカ合衆国大統領首席補佐官, if you want an entry for that...) Most of the current chief-of-staff entries are strictly military in Japanese(not currently indicated), and do not apply to the White House chief of staff. (There is a warning about this in a Japanese wikipedia page on the military title). Should usually be glossed as "chief of staff" (can be used as an individual's title 大統領首席補佐官Podesta, for example), or white house chief of staff. Would be odd to ever use the full, more-literal gloss, I think. However, it does match up with the kanji, and can be safely taken to apply to other presidents should the need arise. 首席補佐官 will need its own entry (about to do that). While common as an alternate, the sK kanji with 主席 in place of 首席 appears to be "wrong"-ish, at least in the case of the White House title. I guess it could be displayed. |
