Nobody else splits "paternal blood;lineage" from "progeny" and some even have "sperm" in with one or two of those meanings but I thought it would be weird to combine them all. But maybe somebody else can come up with something better that works with just 2 senses.

the "cause/source" sense ended up being moved from 4 to 5 - I tried my best to keep it as it was but since I think the 3 closely related senses (3,4,5) should come together, I had to nudge it. (but if somebody else can reduce 3,4,5 to 2 senses instead of 3, it won't move).

I removed "kind, variety, quality, tone" glosses that were in sense 1entirely, not really sure where they came from.

 Comments:
Came to align with 童貞、童貞喪失, 処女喪失。
Added (usu. female), and the xref to the male equivilant. (see comments on 童貞喪失)

Note: Current gloss is inconsistent with 童貞, which lists
"virginity (of a male)".

Surely this should have "virginity (usu. of a female)"? sankoku does *not* have the definition though. hmm

The adj-f glosses seem extremely productive, are in sankoku and daij. You could squeeze [2] and [3] into one sense, but they seem fairly distinct in English to me.

Changed to "(male) virgin" to remove ambiguity.

I understand the implication of the first gloss, but without (male), I still wonder "can this be applied to both genders in some contexts?), (especially since, unlike 処女 there isn't a "male" kanji involved).

Add xref to 処女. Comments/data on 童貞喪失, terms are male/female equivalents.

I agree that 飛沫 should lead.
No, that old newspaper-based frequency list didn't include kana-only tokens. しぶき is very "uk" and I don't think the n-gram count is high enough to tag it.

 Comments:
I think 飛沫 should lead. It’s not that uncommon as a form for しぶき whereas 繁吹(き) is exceedingly rare.
Jim, is there a way to tell from the wordfreq file whether しぶき should have priority tags? When ひまつ was split off into a separate entry, the priority tags were dropped from here, but しぶき is at least as common as ひまつ(飛沫) according to the n-grams.

Two things:
(a) I think that the 飛沫 kanji form should move to the back of the list. 飛沫 is almost invariably read ひまつ, and this entry can give the wrong impression. しぶき is very much a gikun reading of 飛沫, when it's a reading at all
(b) I think the priority tags should be on the 飛沫/ひまつ entry, so I've added them there.

Preceding the 石作り which Robin added in January were two other characters: &#65279. They are the Unicode 'ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK SPACE' (U+FEFF)', and are probably coming from a cut-paste operation that has picked up the 16-bit Unicode BOM marker (U+FEFF) as though it were a real character. I need to discuss with Stuart the possibility of stopping these from getting into the database.

処女地	4254

I didn't xref this otherwise popular term from 処女 because I thought the gloss was hard to reason about... "virgin soil" was maybe not technically wrong, but it's not an overly familiar term to me in this context. Seemed overly literal. Reverso has a bunch of entries for "virgin land", but I didn't look at how many were J->E vs E->J. "virgin territory" was on one entry.

"virgin territory" has the nice property of being a nice gloss for [2] as well, I think. I would have put "virgin territory" as the first entry in [1], but it looks nicer lined up with [2]...

Someone here might have better gloss suggestions.

1. align with "of a male" entries on 童貞
2. actual correctness (no technical age requirements, I don't think)

I am a doctoral student (natural language processing) at NAIST and consulted the pronunciation with a Japanese colleague, who was surprised to hear me say ぜんしょり, as he knew only まえしょり. I cannot rule out that ぜんしょり is used in other fields, but in the context of data processed on a computer only まえしょり seems to be used. See the Wikipedia article above.

True, the JEs just have one sense too. However, it's what's used in Japanese when referring to droplets and the EJs give it for droplets. Since they are different things in English (we wouldn't say "spray infection" for 飛沫感染) I think they're best not put into the one sense.

Google returns basically nothing but some dictionary entries. Almost nonexistent on twitter.
Maybe the rarest term I've yet seen, and can be literally constructed from the meanings of 利かす and 粋 if someone so desires.

Should be no less valid than 粋を利かせる, with latter not having an entry here because it doesn't have a dedicated dictionary entry. (I'm currently matching up 利かす and 利かせる entries). I won't try and create 粋を利かせる, but it's a small inconsistency/distraction to have one entry without the other.

Doesn't refer to the couple itself. I don't have any suggestions for how it should be glossed.
Without JEs or contemporary examples to refer to, I feel we're a bit in the dark when it comes to glossing archaic terms like this. Relying on definitions alone will inevitably lead to inaccurate glosses in some cases. It's one of the reasons I'd rather we didn't accept archaic terms as a general rule.
I don't think an entry like this has much value.
