▶ Austin (US) |
10. | A 2023-02-21 20:53:47 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I guess if it's bigger than Sacramento (#2853293) it can stay. |
|
9. | D* 2023-02-21 20:33:26 Marcus Richert
Comments: | Wiki tells me Austin is the 11th-most-populous city in the United States. The only state capital with a larger population than Austin on that list is New York City. Population isn't everything but if Austin is not considered a "significant" state capital then we should probably not bother mentioning "capital cities" of Anglosphere states and provinces in policy at all. |
|
8. | D 2023-02-21 03:02:57 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Thanks for reminding me. If we're not including all US state capitals, this can go. |
|
7. | A* 2023-02-21 02:23:59 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | "(US)" is used in 40 entries, "(USA)" in 14. They should be aligned. I prefer "US". We don't mention the state on any US city entries, as far as I know. The editorial policy on proper names in JMdict was tweaked about a year ago to add "(if significant)" to the "states and provinces of English-speaking countries and their capital cities" category. (See the discussion on 1077200.) Austin is one of the larger US state capitals but I'm not sure it's needed here. |

Comments: | Was going to lobby for [sK] over [rK](or [oK]?), even though it's in daijisen. The statistics speak for themselves, so I don't really mind if this is amended to [sK]. On bing, searching for "綜括" you have to go through 6 pages of dictionary entries, mixed with mentions of a very modern real estate agency (綜括不動産). Then the 1st hit is a pdf scan of a 1950s academic research paper. Was scouring twitter for the last bit of confirmation, and stumbled on the image of a book with "綜括編" on the spine. 『#東海の先史遺跡』綜括編(1963年)Looks serious enough, I guess this was at least somewhat legitimate at some time in the mid 1900s. https://twitter.com/ore_nest/status/1564519842426023939 https://twitter.com/ore_nest/status/1564519842426023939/photo/1 Although, google N-gram Corpus Counts 総括論 244 綜括編 No matches Otherwise, there is one reasonably known quote with 綜括. And that seems to be about it. It's a nice-looking quote though(if I am to trust google translate, I honestly can't read this well enough to appreciate it).

Comments: | I think their use as abbreviations for languages is very limited. All that comes to mind is titles of dictionaries (e.g. 和仏辞典) and translations (e.g. "独: Wissenschaft"). Unless the name of the language differs significantly from the country name (e.g. 英 - United Kingdom/English), I don't think having a language sense adds much clarity. |

Comments: | Most of these single-kanji abbreviations for countries can also represent the languages of those countries but only a couple of entries currently have a "... (language)" sense (or gloss). Either we should add language senses to 日, 独, 伊, etc. or we should drop the language senses/glosses. My preference is the latter. It's almost always obvious from the context whether these abbreviations are referring to the country or the language. I note that the kokugos only mention the country. |

Comments: | Just made an edit to 風樹の嘆, and pointed it at this entry. "when you will wish" was not grammatical, which prompted me to edit to, something.... Gloss #1 aims to be literal. I don't think that "want to be filial" in isolation makes a lot of sense in English. I have a similar reluctance toward "I want to show filial piety", I feel like an indirect object is needed. Another possible literal gloss: when you want to show filial piety to your parents, they're already gone; For the second gloss, I've taken the imidas explanation(when you understand the hardships of your parents...) and tried to arrive at something more relatable/analogous to Western experience (since we don't really do filial piety here...). "It's too late to repay" tries to capture "you want to repay", which is the 孝行のしたい bit. It's ends up being ambiguous about the parents being dead-dead, but technically I think the original is as well? "It's too late to thank them" seems less ambiguous about them being dead, but "thank" could be a one-off gesture, and not a change in behavior (which repayment would require). Well, best I could come up with. I won't take it personally if the gloss isn't kept. |

Comments: | The entire definition in daijisen is 2 「風樹の嘆」に同じ。 This is not consistent across all dictionaries, so I went with the "particularly" option. But, given the daijisen entry, I think the derivation is probably from 風樹の嘆 backwards to 風樹, rather than the other way around (as it appears before this edit). I think the swaying trees are tied up in some sense of melancholy or regret. |

Filial obligation is the obligation of children to defer to parental wishes and meet a parent’s needs. This role not only includes contact with parents, having shared living arrangements, and providing routine care, but also involves providing physical, informational, and emotional support and financial help, especially when parents reach old age. This responsibility also includes more comprehensive efforts to ensure a parent’s safety, health, emotional well-being, sociability, and continued integration in society through contact with the outside world (Schorr 1960; Caro 2014; Whyte 2004). |
|
Comments: | Article seems to match Rene's comments from back in 2010. Suggested [see=] is a slightly more popular-looking kotowaza listed as a related-expression in the reference article. In particular, the linked expression is more literal, and might provide some insight on the thought-process behind this expression. I *never* know what dictionary term glossed with "filial" really means, since "filial piety" and "filial responsibility" (at least in my experience) are not so ingrained in western culture. So, I've gone ahead and tried for a more relatable gloss as well, but feel free to edit/drop it. For me "properly appreciating", in the western sense, would include things like "visiting, keeping in touch with, making sure they were well cared for", etc. "Doing what you were supposed to do when they were alive, and now they're gone". I think that's the right idea... If the second gloss is kept, I think there is a meaningful gap between "appreciating" and "properly appreciating", with the latter encompassing the thought "I may have done some things, but I should have done more". Like Rene, I think, it's probably less about "active" mistreatment, and more about passive neglect. |

|
Comments: | I invite comments/changes to this edit. Sorry if this seems overly trivial, I'm making this post as a not-overly-sensitive person :) I had replaced "standard" with "common", but ended up convincing myself to remove that as well. My question/emotional reaction when reading this definition is "*a* standard form of worship" or "*the* standard form of worship". Oddly, I wouldn't mind either one personally, but I don't like the feeling of trying to "guess" what the dictionary is saying. The problem is that this practice is, so far as I can tell from personal experience and google, objectively "the standard", with the proviso that there are still other ways to do this at different shrines and different regions (different numbers of claps, different numbers of bows). If we mean "the standard", I think "the" should be added unambiguously, even though policy shies away from articles. If we don't want to make such a committal assertion, we could say "a standard". Or, if we don't want an article, and don't want to take a firm stance on Japanese religious practices, "common" seems easily fair enough given the prevalence of this ritual in Japanese society. Or, we could just say "(form of worshiping at a shrine)", the only loss being that it really is super-common, and we're no longer communicating that. I've searched pretty much every gloss with "standard" in it, and this issue really is limited to just this, and one related entry (or I would have gone the github route). If a change is made/accepted here, the identical change should be made to the entry 二拝二拍一拝. |

Comments: | I appreciate all the time reviewing my comments. My two cents, since I guess I started this... Since 反乱を抑える and 反乱を鎮める actually were approved for deletion(which was my larger motivation, because I actually found them to be misleading), I think it would be completely consistent to *not* create this entry. (Consistent with Robin's remarks on 反乱を鎮める). On the other hand, this is a very nice collocation now (and there are lots of collocations in this dictionary, whatever the actual editorial policy might be). If I searched for either 反乱 or 鎮圧, I think this entry would be particularly elucidating to see, and I would probably build a flashcard off of it. (As we've seen, there are a lot of terms for "suppress" to chose from in Japanese, for example). Beyond that, I don't think I have a definitive view on whether this should or shouldn't actually be here. Not that it was my call anyway :) But I won't be bothered with whatever everyone else decides. |

Comments: | I suspect that almost all those n-grams are names. Nikk is the only kokugo that has this. I don't think it's needed. If a word is in none of the usual refs besides nikkoku, it's usually archaic or obsolete. A submission that cites nikk should ideally be supported by other references or evidence of non-archaic use. Jim, could we add a note about nikk to the editorial policy? |
