Comments: | yeah, it's a noun, it's just hard to gloss as one in english. in the same way that "regards" is a plural noun when you sign off a letter using it, but you're kind of using it as an expression and we generally don't have single words marked as exp. if anything this might be an example of what should be called [n,exp] as opposed to our usual pattern of marking multi-word expressions that function as nouns [exp,n] |

Comments: | I'm wondering whether it was the right decision to change the PoS on this from n to exp. 拝啓 is still tagged as a noun; they should be aligned. The kokugos consider them nouns, but that's the case with all "〜を表す語"-defined words, even though they're not used like regular nouns. From a usage point of view, exp probably makes more sense, but maybe we want to stick with "n" just for consistency's sake. |

Refs: | all dicts list the brother sense as being first except meikyo, which has *only* the pn and suf senses. it lists the brother sense as (造). all sources have pn and suf as being different senses, which i think makes sense given that they have to be glossed quite differently in english |
Comments: | listing the brother sense last, as a mixture of meikyo and the other approaches seems reasonable. there's no way that anyone is reading the noun 兄 as けい without furigana |

《orig. meaning》 ▶ Russian roulette-style game |
8. | A 2023-02-12 04:59:47 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Well, 肝練り is rare, and the historical original is even rarer. Since it involves a gun, as does Russian roulette, I don't feel much more detail is appropriate. |
7. | A* 2023-02-11 20:46:02 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Nicolas' original gloss could maybe be trimmed, but I think it's a shame to reduce it to "Russian roulette game" instead of describing exactly what it is. Sometimes brevity is the enemy of accuracy. |
