Refs: | 出産 8635274 88.2% お産 520351 5.3% 分娩 630304 6.4% sankoku has an entry for お産 (with the お), defn: 子をうむこと。出産。分娩。 reverso: zero glosses as "confinement" Oxford: DATED <---- the condition of being in childbirth. "the pros and cons of home versus hospital confinement" Notice, no 産 alone (though I obviously cherry-picked this) 出産・分娩・お産とは?意味の違いや定義、正しい使い方は https://ikujilog.net/meaning-birth-delivery |

Comments: | Primary motivation was to remove the dated "confinement" from the childbirth glosses. Especially as a J->E reference, there seems to be no need for this term. If you google something like reddit childbirth confinement You'll get discussions of the Asian concept of "postpartum confinement" which is totally unrelated. (and actually means something like "to be confined"). Should a translator *ever* translate お産 today as "confinement"? Probably not, I would think... (I've never heard of the term, and I think it's more likely to be misunderstood than not). Sankoku's *first* definition for 産 is ->お産. That said, the reference backwards to 産 without the honorific seems unnecessary here(sankoku doesn't link お産 to 産, but rather 出産 and 分娩, and the definition is given at お産). I suspect the お is important to get this sense unambiguously (hence the explicit sankoku entry). If you search for *just* 産 and "childbirth" in reverso you get almost nothing. (vs. お産). I just wonder what advice we are imparting by saying "the お isn't necessary, 産 means the same thing"). (re:2010 comments, controversial after all) An xref to 出産, which is far more common, seems more useful to me. I question whether this is [pol] in any practical sense. Is this a polite alternate to 出産? Unclear... Using [pol] to mark 美化語 has always been a bit redundant (the お・ご is right there...). But we still have [pol] on お茶, so I've left it. |

Here a cannabis/marijuana sense would almost always be written クサ. If it's not visible, it should be in its own entry. I'll close this to shorten the queue and reopen for a bit. |

Comments: | I'm confused about sense 3. Wikipedia lists two separate meanings (alignment in D&D style games, and the meaning used in video games), and I'm mostly familiar with the latter meaning. I'm fine with keeping "alignment" (D&D meaning) but "character class" usually means the character's _profession_ (warrior, ranger, cleric etc.) and has little to do with 属性 水属性の敵 means an enemy that's probably strong against attacks that classify as "water" but weak against attacks of a different type. You would do well to choose an attack that doesn't do water damage, or equip items that provide resistance to water damage (because the enemy deals water damage) I would translate this simply as "element" most of the time, even though the categories don't always match the classical four or chinees five elements. "type" would be a good translation too. |

Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postpartum_confinement Postpartum confinement is a traditional practice following childbirth.[1] Those who follow these customs typically begin immediately after the birth, and the seclusion or special treatment lasts for a culturally variable length: typically for one month or 30 days,[2] 26 days, up to 40 days, two months, or 100 days. Wiki xref (not to this term exactly) https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/産後の肥立ち 産後の肥立ち(さんごのひだち)は、出産後の産褥期<----- の女性に対して、生活上の様々な制限が加えられる伝統的風習。 This definition hints at the relationship between [1] and [2]: https://kotobank.jp/word/産褥-70851 〘名〙 出産のとき、産婦の用いる寝床。転じて、出産およびその後の数週間をいう。 |
|
Comments: | This use of "confinement" only adds confusion, and actually appears to be completely distinct from the "confinement" I've removed from all of the childbirth entries. It would seem that to the extent "postpartum confinement" belongs, it would belong in [2], not [1]. Even though sankoku has only [1], an image search (nothing scary) suggests that [2] is actually a common meaning. Perhaps *the* common meaning. (No societal need for [1] these days...) |

Refs: | Baby due date https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/baby-due-date https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimated_date_of_delivery The estimated date of delivery (EDD), also known as expected date of confinement,[1] and estimated due date or simply due date.... Incredible... wikipedia's "reference" for the term "expected date of confinement" is: A Concise Guide to the Employment Ordinance. Labour Department, Hong Kong Government You can read the ordinance here if you like: https://zegal.com/blog/post/employment-ordinance-in-hong-kong/ |
|
Comments: | comments at お産. If "confinement" is dated, so is "expected date of confinement", which is especially odd as the 1st gloss. (even though wikipedia explicitly offers it, using a Hong Kong government regulation as a citation, hah). My intuition seeing "due date" was "baby's due date". The internet tells me that a straight "baby due date" might be even more common. Either one (or both), but "due date" should probably be here in some form. If you want to read a fun collection of random tidbits, you can google: "date of confinement" site:reddit.com What happens when a sailor gets pregnant at sea? https://www.reddit.com/r/navy/comments/5xoz6j/what_happens_when_a_sailor_gets_pregnant_at_sea/ It basically says "this servicemember is pregnant. Her estimated date of confinement (20 weeks) is DDMMMYYYY, and her estimated date of delivery is DDMMMYYYY. Once you reach 20 weeks of pregnancy you are not allowed onboard at all. The ship can opt to keep you to 20 weeks, but every CO in the history of ever will kick you off te ship as soon as possible. This is called the "date of confinement." Don't know why....but it is. Edit: I looked up the term confinement. It's a relic from the 1800s https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/c3p3rx/til_in_tudor_times_high_class_women_would_close/ Yeah some of our forms at work still have ‘Expected Date of Confinement’ on them. I’m gradually changing them so that the ‘C’ refers to ‘Childbirth’ because I’d like us to move on from the 1500s. Edit: to clarify, I don’t work in a hospital, these are maternity forms where I work (I work in HR). The ‘Confinement’ part actually confuses people. |

I’ve listed these as [arch], and the koj-only definition as [obsc]; given the 〜たる, obscure kanji, and small number of web hits, I think this is reasonable. |

References like these don't make a convincing case that a word is an established term that is worth recording in a dictionary. Since the word is rare, slangy, and describes a short-lived phenomenon from 20 years ago that may have never been widespread, I wouldn't object to dropping the entry. If it stays I think we need mention something about this being "in front of an audience," since that's the key aspect that distinguishes this from ブルセラ. |
