Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masu_(measurement) A masu (枡 ("square") or 升 ("measure")[1]) was originally a square wooden box used to measure rice in Japan during the feudal period. |
|
Comments: | Do we need a dedicated sense for the wooden box pictured here: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/枡 Or just do an image search for: 升 (copious and unambiguous results) Clearly the box itself is something recognizable in its own right. I came here from 升売り, which referenced the existence of a "wooden masu box". But I don't see that specifically in any of the current senses. Something like: [5] traditional a square wooden box used to measure rice and other foods by volume Or something... Maybe this should replace [1]. Perhaps the current "measuring container" itself is too general... |

"Selling by the box(ful)" usually sounds like you get to keep the box... Also sounds odd to sell a liquid (sake, oil) by the box. |
|
Comments: | First reaction was that a "boxful" sounds like a lot, and a "masu" is a pretty small box. I think few Western readers would realize this. Then I looked harder... daijs says "枡ではかって" , "measured with a masu". But you don't keep the box. Then looked at the handful of pictures on twitter, and saw a lot of plastic bags. Seems rare but easily comprehensible to a Japanese person. Plenty of book results, maybe historic/traditional... Note: we don't actually have a dedicated sense under 升 for the traditional wooden box itself, even though we reference the existence of such a box here. For whatever it's worth, I'm not fond of weblio's "sell by the measure". That doesn't seem like very natural English to me, and the "measure" seems to clearly be volume(even if the result is advertised by weight, such as 1 masu of rice = 2.1kg, or what have you, as in the first twitter ref). Also note: the volume seems undefined. It depends on which size masu you use (there seem to be a collection of standard sizes though). |

Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grinding_(video_games) (No japanese xref) What is the word or set-phrases of "grinding/grindy gameplay" as opposed to "power-leveling" in formal/informal Japanese https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/61206/what-is-the-word-or-set-phrases-of-grinding-grindy-gameplay-as-opposed-to-pow Answer: I think what you are looking for is 作業感の強いゲーム (formal) or 作業ゲー (slang). In gaming contexts, 作業 (literally "task") is a common word which refers to that repetitive and boring work such as defeating the same enemy many times to level up. 作業 is basically a negative word in this context, and many people dislike it. But there are popular games whose main enjoyment is 作業 itself, so 作業 is not 100% negative. For example, Cookie Clicker is a typical 作業ゲー but is loved by many people. For copious examples, search: "作業ゲー" "ff14" (ff14 = final fantasy 14, a video game title. Plenty of other titles would work). https://www.wordreference.com/enja/grinding grinding n (gaming: repeating tasks for advantage)

Comments: | You'll probably have thoughts on wording, but I ask that you include the word "grinding", preferably as a gerund. "grinding" is the closest English analogy(a very good one). A game which requires grinding is one where you have to repeatedly fight mindless battles in order to "level up" your character in order to be strong enough to progress. There is no English word for "a game the requires grinding" that I am aware of, and I haven't found a Japanese word for the act of "grinding" outside of classifying the whole game as a 作業ゲー. So translation will always require some finesse. See 死にゲー for another entry with a necessarily verbose gloss. This is clearly more popular than 作業ゲーム, so I wouldn't xref. But 作業ゲーム definitely exists, so it should probably be in here. I will propose it as well... |

Comments: | Notes at xref. I was going to skip adding this, but then I eventually got to searching: "ff14" "作業ゲーム" I think there are more than enough examples for just this one game to support this as its own entry. |
