I think "mixed bag" is the most common way of expressing this concept, at least in American English. This is also what the priority example sentence uses.

Saito has "thread and thrum." That phrase and "wheat and tares" might be too old-fashioned for inclusion here.

謹慎(きんしん)は、江戸時代から明治時代初期にかけて日本に存在した自由刑の一種で、一定期間外出を禁止されることである。転じて、活動をしばらく休止することをも指す。

Modern, suspension of a coach for relations with a female player. Does not appear to be "house arrest":

  Comments:
sankoku has only the "house arrest", but words it as "家などで"(i.e., not only one's home). Reverso quickly turned up "confined to his home city"
徳川慶喜は故郷の水戸市で謹慎する。
Condition Number One: Yoshinobu TOKUGAWA should confine himself within his hometown of Mito City.

Reverso turns up many instances glossed as "suspension", which is in daijs.

sankoku says [vs,vi], ngrams support.

I've split [1] and [2], though the kokugos cram them together. We've left out the unifying nuance "for a period of self-reflection on one's wrongdoings", presumably before returning to society. (this is also apparent in the kanji).

[3] seems possibly arch. (not in sankoku).

Spellcheck called out the spelling of behavior.

I think it's best to think of it as an entry-wide x-ref (a feature that will probably be added to JMdict: NG).
I've reindexed that sentence and chosen a new one for sense 1.

I don't think the antonym cross reference to sense 1 of 低い is right.
As I wrote last year in the entry for 低い:
"Right now it seems we have
   低い[1] <-> 高い[2,3]
   低い[3] <-> 高い[1] (and possibly 低い[2])
   低い[4] <-> 高い[4,5]"

The current priority example sentence indexed to sense 01 of 高い seems like it should be sense 03 instead. It's definitely not high/tall.
  銀行はリスクの高い顧客へのローンには高い金利をつける。
Banks charge higher interest on loans to risky customers.

School essay hand-corrected with red-ink for "misuse" of 渡る for [2]
https://salon.mainichi-kotoba.jp/archives/763
「わたる」は「渡る」を使う場合が多いのですが、範囲や期間をあらわす場合には使えません。

Wiktionary expends a fair amount of effort on the senses:
https://ja.wiktionary.org/wiki/わたる
Seems we're maybe missing a form... 航る for ocean crossings...

Spanning years([2]):
年にわたって	139862	73.0%
年に渡って	44513	23.2%
年に亘って	6444	3.4%
年に渉って	226	0.1%
年に亙って	636	0.3%

Crossing via: (i.e. a bridge)
でわたって	1786	5.8%
で渡って	29095	94.1%
で亘って	0	0.0% <- not used
で渉って	37	0.1%
で亙って	0	0.0% <- not used

Explains that people use "渡る" "incorrectly"
https://wisdom-box.com/confusing/similar/wataru/
一方「亘る」は、「数カ月に亘る仕事(=数カ月に達する仕事)」とか「多方面に亘る知識(=広い範囲の知識)」などと使われます。つまり、「範囲や期間」をイメージするのですね。

Note: the respondent did not call 渡 an error, but did offer 亘:
「2年間に渡って」と「2年に渡って」、どっちが正しいですか?
https://ja.hinative.com/questions/736646
「2年に渡って(亘って)」が正しいです。
なぜなら「2年に渡って(亘って)」は、"2年の間、物事が継続している"という意味だからです。「2年間に渡って」だと、意味が重なってしまいます。

https://www.weblio.jp/content/わたって
亘って
読み方:わたって
ある程度や範囲に及んでいること。「渡る」の限定的な漢字遣い。 <--亘 not used for everything
  Comments:
Suggest a split, with [2] perhaps getting its own entry headed by 亘る (in spite of statistics).

I've made edits which I don't expect to stand as-is. They reflect my understanding of the situation.

sankoku gives two entries, one for 亘る alone with sense [2], and one for 渡る;渉る, with literally 12 different senses. (wiktionary also has a pile of senses)

Quite coincidentally, this is on Stephen's spreadsheet, so might have gotten a look-over anyway. I just stumbled into this entry.
https://github.com/JMdictProject/JMdictIssues/issues/107

The [usu.] comments seem to differ from actual practice. Primarily it looks like [1] is 渡, and [2] *should be* 亘. In practice, [2] is [uk], and 渡 is actually the most common kanji form. (I'm assuming sense[2] statistics are reflected in 年にわたって statistics). Note: the first corrected essay (first ref.) did not replace に渡って with 亘って, but kana わたって.

If we split off 亘る, this might be a case for making a prescriptive overrule of the statistics, putting 亘る as the top-level kanji, and putting a usage [note=]. Obviously 渡る will necessarily be present on both entries.

Same rationale would apply to our standalone entry に渡って, which should possible by headed as に亘って. (or, we agree the world has changed, stodgy Japanese lit. teachers not withstanding).

What is more useful for us to report as the "best" kanji? The one that is most-used, or the one that won't lose marks on an essay?

航る is limited to sea-crossings, but I tacked it on. Probably needs a sense to handle correctly. There is one example of this use in furigana.info.

  Comments:
daijs glosses for 栄養物 and 滋養物 are clearly the same(apart from 栄養素 vs 滋養分). But the few reverso entries for 滋養物 gloss it as "nourishment" (which is agnostic to food or drink).

They are both explicitly not limited to food by daijs(飲食物). daijs says "high in nutrients" but this doesn't appear in eijiro for any translations I've seen. Maybe "nourishment" carries this nuance well enough.

If I think this is a bit [dated], that would be consistent with thinking "nourishment" is a bit dated. I need some other opinions at this point. Maybe "nourishment" does belong at the xref. Maybe some xref terms belong here.

A trencher is a piece of construction equipment used to dig trenches, especially for laying pipes or electrical cables, for installing drainage, or in preparation for trench warfare. Trenchers may range in size from walk-behind models, to attachments for a skid loader or tractor, to very heavy tracked heavy equipment.

Happen to be familiar with this piece of equipment.

"ditching machine" is comparatively rare next to "trenching machine", which in turn is rare next to "trencher". I don't know how many glosses we want to give, but "trencher" is quite versatile.

"trenching machine" site:twitter.com 40+ hits
"trencher" site:twitter.com some people are named "trencher", so it's a bit hard to gauge. Lots with pics though.

"trench digging machine" is more of a definition than a gloss, but it's the literal translation of the kanji, and serves to disambiguate.

Oxford:

========== Some hits for "nutrients" outside of reverso

https://tr-ex.me/翻訳/日本語-英語/栄養物
get/take (enough)nutrients は、nutrientは形容詞で栄養を含む、滋養になることを言います。また、名詞では、栄養物、栄養になる食物、栄養素を指します。

https://nativecamp.net/blog/20230607-nutrition
栄養摂取はnutrient intake、nutrientは栄養物や栄養素、intakeは食物などの摂取を表すためです。
  Comments:
If kept, I think "nutrients" needs to be plural here (various ~物 terms are plural). This is never 1 nutrient (栄養素).

It doesn't seem like it should be, but the collocations and parallel translations seem to suggest that it is just "nutrition".

Critically, not the "science of nutrition", so some distinction is needed.

"nutriment" could go here, if others here are familiar with the word. It never shows up in reverso, and I've never heard of it myself, and it doesn't come up in reverso at all.

"nourishment" is a synonym, but seems like an awkward(perhaps [dated]) gloss to me. At least, we don't talk about getting nourishment from breakfast cereal. All the translations I see that do this are quite stiff.

I didn't want to confuse "nutrient" given 栄養分 and 栄養素, but it seems there is a case for it. At least it's plural here with some context.

At 259 Google n-grams for ラリッタ, it seems like a weak basis for keeping it,. I think this entry is also potentially "harmful" in that users could reverse search their way here and misundersrand how to use it.
6. A 2023-11-08 06:06:59  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
As I commented back in 2015, the only reason for having this is the ラリッタ form, which doesn't clearly align with ラリる.
We could have it as the only form in the entry, but ラリッた and らりった may as well be there too.

Brian raised a topic on Github ([JMdictProject/JMdictIssues] Allowing inclusion of common road signage / placards as idiomatic (Issue #92)) arguing for including this as an entry.

My issue with 熊没出注意 is that it is 1) not to my knowledge officially used on road signage but on trail heads and the like (though I don't live in bear country and could be misinformed), and 2) is one of several forms used, albeit the most common in the ngrams at a combined 58%, 3) very compositional where 熊 could be replaced by any other animal you might want to warn for. That said looking at the ngrams and google images it's at least 90x more common than 猿/サル出没注意 so this point might be moot.

熊注意	3182	13.6%
熊出没注意	11851	50.8%
熊に注意	3472	14.9%
クマ注意	915	3.9%
クマ出没注意	1670	7.2%
クマに注意	2237	9.6%

It is true that adding it to JMdict would mean it would likely pop up at the top for searches for 熊出没注意 英語, but Tatoeba sentences are also indexed by services like Weblio so adding it there instead of here, as I suggested when deleting this, should have much the same effect.
