Comments: | Is there particular reason this is here? 各[anything] = each [anything]. I don't see anything special about this one(no special reading, not a difficult-to-guess combo like 各紙 - newspaper or 各科 - school subject). We have 40~50 such entries in jmdict (starts-with 各, starts-with かく). Some seem legitimately useful(各紙), some are maybe useful as examples of 各. This list could probably stand to lose a few terms. Also, I'd call this an [exp] before I called it an [n]. sankoku calls 各 itself 副詞. I'd probably change almost all of the 各~ terms from [n] to [exp]. |

Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_rat The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), also known as the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, wharf rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat and Norwegian rat, is a widespread species of common rat. Even here: https://www.pestworld.org/pest-guide/rodents/norway-rats/ The Norway rat commonly referred to as the street or sewer rat, is believed to be of Asian origin, arriving in the U.S. on ships from other countries in the 1700s. |
|
Comments: | The lit translation is "gutter rat", so the "street rat" and "sewer rat" given by Wikipedia seem quite appropriate. Looking at yourei results, there's a lot of colloquial dialog, and these seem like the most useful glosses. "Norway Rat" looks potentially useful for a pest-control company translating their website (this is what comes up in English...). Probably not so useful in literature. |

Comments: | not the commenter but I'd phrase it something like "to run aimlessly/confusedly around trying to escape" i.e. the point is that you don't know where you're running, you don't have a clear direction at hand (and the person next to you may be running in a different direction) of course there will no doubt be a dimension of panic there too in the confusion |

Comments: | This seems to be fairly strongly [adj-f] vs [adj-no](see 赤字, ポイント、債務). The one の exception is 累積の投票 (sometimes shortened to 累積投票) which is "Cumulative voting" in English. But this is different from other words, as this means "voting by means of accumulation", vs. other collocations which generally mean "all of X added up" ("accumulated"/"cumulative"). We have a bunch of 累積* terms, eijiro has an even longer list I think (6 pages of collocations, in fact, usually "cumulative", sometimes "accumulated", a few oddballs). https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=累積 Given the fact that accumulation -> cumulative will be non-obvious to many, combined with the prevalence of [adj-f] usage, I think it's worth splitting this out for the extra glosses. |

Comments: | Gloss is wrong(or at least ambiguous), this is A+B, see 溝[3]. Example below is "deep rift between men and women". Any reasonable context will be comprehensible from the parts to a western reader. 溝がある is a common collocation with very literal interpretation (having gaps, having gutters, having whatever a 溝 can be). It is not usually about men and women (I had to search for 男女 + 溝がある to get an example). We would need to do a fair amount of work to expand this entry so that it doesn't mask the other meanings of 溝. Also, even in this sense it doesn't seem limited to men and women. Could probably be between boss and workers, siblings, whoever... Comments: | Voted to delete three of these 各 terms(各藩、各団体、各室, probably more should go) already. This is one that I think should stay (for non-obviousness). I'll use this to pitch my idea that these are all [exp], not [n]. sankoku calls 各 itself a 副詞, so this is not a [n]+[n] or [adj-f]+[n]. I'll be upfront that sankoku has a medium collection of 各 terms (including 各年, which we don't have, but *not* including 各科). Even for the ones glossed それぞれの... they are all just identified by sankoku as 名. (when in doubt, everything in Japanese is 名...) A more interesting term is 各所, which has two definitions: 1. それぞれの箇所 2. あちこち Not sure which of those is more or less [n] or [exp], just one more point to consider. Just a suggestion/thought. For my western brain, 各 is a grammatical operation, and these remain distinct words (hence [exp]). Perhaps this is the wrong analysis. |

Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutter_oil Reprocessing of used cooking oil is often very rudimentary; techniques include filtration, boiling, refining, and the removal of some adulterants.[30] It is then packaged and resold as a cheaper alternative to normal cooking oil.[31] Another version of gutter oil uses discarded animal parts, animal fat and skins, internal organs, and expired or otherwise low-quality meat, which is then cooked in large vats to extract the oil.[32] |
|
Comments: | I watch enough random Chinese youtube news that I actually knew this term. Anyway... The recycled "waste oil" is very often cooking oil in the first place. If you substitute "cooking oil" for "waste oil", you'll see why I tweaked the gloss. ("normal" cribbed from wikipedia) I had believed that "waste oil" was strictly post-restaurant waste(i.e. 100% cooking oil), but I guess it can include industrial byproducts(waste) as well. |

Refs: | https://www.dictionary.com/browse/tic#google_vignette -tic a suffix, equivalent in meaning to -ic, occurring in adjectives of Greek origin (analytic), used especially in the formation of adjectives from nouns with stems in -sis: hematotic; neurotic. -tic might not be used with the same frequency to coin new words but it's not unheard of - I'm thinking of "hydromatic" from the song Greased Lightnin' (from Grease). Wiktionary has an entry for "bozotic" (from "bozo") |
