Comments: | I do understand what you mean but what I'm saying is that it doesn't really have to be read that way. A+ and A++ are different from SS and SSS as we actually have SS and SSS entries - that point here. |
|
25. | A* 2024-09-18 01:08:23 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | What I mean is that "SABCDEF" doesn't include "SS" or "SSS", so "S" can't be anything other than the top rank on that scale. I don't think this is any different from describing "A" as the top grade even though A+ or A++ may exist. |
|
24. | A* 2024-09-17 03:08:59 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Is the (usu.) really confusing? usually the top grade (on a SABCDEF scale), [sometimes the third grade] |
|
23. | A* 2024-09-17 02:07:16 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | But not top rank when thr scale goes up to SSS, still. I think it's a shame to not cover this usage at all. |

Comments: | I think it (and other similar abbreviations) should be a separate entry with a キージー reading. It could have a note on it usually being read キロ, possibly. |
|
12. | A* 2023-11-28 00:35:09 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think it belongs here or on キロ, except possibly as an sK form. I note that we don't have cm, km, ml, etc. I'm not sure there's much value in having them as entries. |
|
11. | A* 2023-11-27 23:08:50 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think it's appropriate that people looking up "kg" get to a matching entry. We have キロ/kilogram as a sense in 1042610. It could move to a separate entry with kg as a kanji form. Failing that, this could stay as it is. |
|
10. | A* 2023-11-27 08:18:19 Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We usually have these symbols in separate entries. "m" (meter), "g" (gram), and "v" (volt) are in the entries for エム, ジー, and ブイ, for example, not メートル, グラム, and ボルト. Judging by the results on youglish, it seems people would read "kg" as キロ in both formal and casual contexts >95% of the time. I think I'm in favor of dropping "kg", but if it stays I guess it should be placed before the rare kanji form. |

|
Comments: | We do not have a *single* term in jmdict glossed with "semi" or "quasi" that uses 准, and ngrams seem to agree. (I grabbed a bunch of 準 terms to check). This is in spite of the fact that the "kanji metadata" say that 准 includes "quasi" and 準 does not. 准 quasi-, semi-, associate 準 semi-, correspond to, proportionate to, conform, imitate kanjipedia has an example for the "quasi" meaning, a term we do not have(comments in ref): 准后(ジュゴウ) Given that the "quasi" gloss appears at very least unproductive for 准, there seems to be little point in indicating it in this entry. The truth is that 准 is also unproductive for "associate", essentially limited to the terms 准看護婦 and 准教授. While 准 appears as a prefix in other terms, the gloss never contains "assistant", "associate", "etc". Basically we have: warrant officer commodore; brigadier general baronet warrant officer (JASDF) approval; sanction That's about it, outside of prof. and nurse. I was going to have : [2][pref] [restr=準] associate but as it's rare and unproductive, there's really no reason to list 准 as a prefix at all. Even having [2] at all seems questionable, but given entries like "準構成員"(associate member (esp. of a crime syndicate), it at least seems plausible that neologisms would use this. |

Just saw used as "to put up a magic barrier", the result was a translucent spherical "aura" surrounding two unconscious people, about the size of a tent. So it matches "to put up a tent". But it just popped into existence, and doesn't seem to match sense[2] otherwise... hmm. |

Comments: | Removed [uk]. What is our official cutoff for [uk] by the way? This is very close to a 50/50 split, so probably not controversial to remove here (encountered myself in song lyrics with kanji). But it now occurs to me that I've been treating it as 50%, and that has always appeared to me to be the practice here. I've never participated in a discussion on this question, but it seems like [uk] should imply kana-only should be well above 50%. "Usually" seems quite a bit stronger to me than "more often than not". Or, phrased differently, it seems like if you are highly likely to encounter the kanji form, and if you wouldn't look odd using the kanji form, then [uk] might be misleading. Incidentally (reading earlier comments), this was also a "star studded sky"-type context. ==== I googled "what percent is usually". Google returns: https://grammar.reverso.net/frequency/ always 100 percent of the time (or almost 100%). usually about 80 percent of the time. <----- 80%, seems close to my intuition often more than half of the time. sometimes less than half of the time. rarely about 20 percent of the time. never at no time. Whatever our intentions might be, or might have been, it seems reasonable to expect that an average reader who sees "usually kana" on a term is going to expect something in the 80%+ range, not 50.01%+. |

Comments: | I used to need the tags on both forms to get the (P) in EDICT, but that's no longer the case. The "newsX" was basically a ranking based on a 20yo newspaper analysis. The "news2" ones didn't even generate a (P). No need to remove them, I guess. |

Refs: | https://www.monotaro.com/s/?c=&q=のぼり 幟 40 hits more than half of the products actually use のぼり/ノボリ in the title, several don't even feature it in the description (i.e. it's an "sK" essentially) https://www.monotaro.com/s/?c=&q=のぼり のぼり 1309 hits |
|
Comments: | Well, I've done it several times after getting an OK from Jim, so there will already be several entries where the kanji form doesn't have the same tags as the hiragana. I think having frequency tags on little used kanji forms makes things for users because the obvious implication is that the kanji is very common and worth prioritizing when the reality is, like here, that it's very sparsely used. |

Comments: | I don't recall seeing priority tags removed from borderline-rare kanji forms. In any case, this one doesn't seem to be borderline. There's already a [uk] tag to indicate that のぼり is more common. There are some technical app-dev reasons why I'd rather have the priority tags in both fields in this situation. It would be a different story if we were adding an [rK] tag to 幟. |

Comments: | "rogue" seems to have various implications that "老獪" doesn't have and it is pretty uncommon. i wouldn't say it's reflecting the kanji meaning, but the meaning is reflected by the kanji. kokugos don't mention experience at all for "悪賢い", but "経験を積んで" is always present to define "老獪" and i think the glosses should do the same here. note how gg5 translates "老獪な男" to "an old [a cunning] fox; a sly old dog", not because the age itself is important but to denote how his craftiness is influenced by his experienced and this is inherent in "老獪" |
