13. A* 2023-11-28 02:43:44  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think it (and other similar abbreviations) should be a separate entry with a キージー reading. It could have a note on it usually being read キロ, possibly.
12. A* 2023-11-28 00:35:09  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I don't think it belongs here or on キロ, except possibly as an sK form. I note that we don't have cm, km, ml, etc. I'm not sure there's much value in having them as entries.
11. A* 2023-11-27 23:08:50  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think it's appropriate that people looking up "kg" get to a matching entry. We have キロ/kilogram as a sense in 1042610. It could move to a separate entry with kg as a kanji form. Failing that, this could stay as it is.
10. A* 2023-11-27 08:18:19  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
We usually have these symbols in separate entries. "m" (meter), "g" (gram), and "v" (volt) are in the entries for エム, ジー, and ブイ, for example, not メートル, グラム, and ボルト.

Judging by the results on youglish, it seems people would read "kg" as キロ in both formal and casual contexts >95% of the time.

I think I'm in favor of dropping "kg", but if it stays I guess it should be placed before the rare kanji form.

I don't think it refers specifically to the marking. The kokugos define it as "弱く", "弱音で", "やわらかく", etc., and then mention that it may be represented by the symbol / marking "p".

Dropping [adj-na]

It might be clearer to split into separate [adj-no] and [vs] senses as meikyo does.

added more glosses and used neck/throat as examples which most kokugos do + changed the "screw" gloss to be more clear
gg5 uses "put the screws on" but i think it's a mistranslation, kokugos all use "せめる", "苦しめる" or "取り締まる" and i don't believe it's helpful at all as it has a pretty different meaning in english
gave "settle accounts" its own sense

i wonder if i might have missed a better way to make it clear that "絞め上げる" can only be used for the 1st sense (and possibly when referring to "首")?

  Comments:
Do we need "one's lines" when the first gloss is already "line"? I think the qualifier "one's" can lead to confusion. I'm sure it's correct in that an actor etc. could use it to refer specifically to their lines, but this isn't usage that dominates, it's usually about the lines of a fictional character (as most people just aren't actors).

(I removed the gloss once in 2021 but Robin added it back)

散りばめた	88672	50.8% <- kanji wins

ちりばめ	397259	49.6%
散りばめ	403200	50.4% <- kanji wins

Dictionary form is more likely kanji, but dictionary form isn't common.
散りばめる	8731	47.5%
ちりばめる	9668	52.5% <- kana wins
  Comments:
Removed [uk]. What is our official cutoff for [uk] by the way?

This is very close to a 50/50 split, so probably not controversial to remove here (encountered myself in song lyrics with kanji).

But it now occurs to me that I've been treating it as 50%, and that has always appeared to me to be the practice here.

I've never participated in a discussion on this question, but it seems like [uk] should imply kana-only should be well above 50%. "Usually" seems quite a bit stronger to me than "more often than not". Or, phrased differently, it seems like if you are highly likely to encounter the kanji form, and if you wouldn't look odd using the kanji form, then [uk] might be misleading.

Incidentally (reading earlier comments), this was also a "star studded sky"-type context.

====

I googled "what percent is usually". Google returns:
https://grammar.reverso.net/frequency/
always	100 percent of the time (or almost 100%).
usually	about 80 percent of the time. <----- 80%, seems close to my intuition
often	more than half of the time.
sometimes less than half of the time.
rarely	about 20 percent of the time.
never	at no time.

Whatever our intentions might be, or might have been, it seems reasonable to expect that an average reader who sees "usually kana" on a term is going to expect something in the 80%+ range, not 50.01%+.

  Comments:
Add this to the list of jisho.org quirks(well, probably not just them). I don't know how well the [fld] tags are supported by various consumers of jmdict, but there is a danger in relying on them entirely for disambiguation.

Usually a missing [fld] tag would just remove a little information from the gloss, so I hope not to make a major issue over this, but for a kanji beginning with "手", "one's hand" is completely ambiguous.

Besides jisho.org, weblio doesn't include the [fld] info either.

JMdictでの「手札」の英訳

文法情報	(名詞)
対訳	one's hand

vs.
研究社 新和英中辞典での「手札」の英訳

〈トランプの〉 a hand

I would love if the jisho.org team were open to help in fixing some of these things, but the website disclaims any interest in contributions, and things seem fairly fixed as they are...

The 文 symbol in in daijirin and obunsha is just used to precede information about the 文語形 inflections of a word.
The don't mean the same thing as the 文 tag in sankoku (=文章語).

Sankoku tends to overuse its 文章語 tag compared to meikyo and shinsen, but [form] might be okay here anyway.

We've explained a few times recently (entries 1602510, 1793820, 2859276) to anonymous contributors that the rK tag isn't used for any uncommon form containing kanji.

beef
the flesh of a cow, bull, or ox, used as food.

I don't think there's anything wrong tagging "beef" or various -肉 entries as [food]. Meats could be considered "raw ingredients", sure, but they are particularly cut and prepared from animal flesh to be used as food. Nobody uses words like 鶏肉 or 鶏肉 to talk about the flesh of chicken outside their use as food.

Thank you for the context.

The Japanese Wikipedia and Heibonsha Encyclopedia's entries define 「人狐」 (read にんこ/ひとぎつね) as an evil spirit that possesses humans rather than as a person that turns into a fox.

I am unable to find references supporting established usage of this term as "werefox". Even two resources which often contain jargon related to gaming and pop culture, dic.pixiv.net and dic.nicovideo.jp, come up empty. Unless references can show otherwise, this currently only seems to be a neologism limited to these franchises, coined as a calque by their English–Japanese translators.
1. A* 2023-10-22 20:19:51
  Comments:
This character is used in Western fantasy settings, specifically in Medieval fantasy, and when a character like this is translated into Japanese, the term used is "人狐". You see this in "Magic the Gathering", "Dungeons & Dragons", RPG video games, etc.

Magic the Gathering has a card called "Werefox Bodyguard" which is translated into Japanese as "人狐のボディガード" with the hiragana reading "じんこ".

So for example if there are four players, ABCD, and player A wins the game, players BCD might pay player A a total of 5000 points. If a spectator, E, agreed to place a 外ウマ bet on player A, then BCD would also have to pay him an equivalent 5000 points. If player A lost and had to pay BCD 5000 points, then spectator E would also have to pay BCD 5000 points.

I see we don't have a mahjong sense in our 馬・うま entry. I should try to put something there eventually as well.
