My impression is that people would use a word like "愛国心" to distance themselves from the unsavory associations of words like "国家主義." I wouldn't be surprised if 右翼団体 groups also used the word to disingenuously distance themselves from their own views. "Patriotism" works that way in English too. The point is that both types of groups are using "愛国" specifically because they believe it will be interpreted differently or more favorably than "nationalism."

I guess it wouldn't hurt to have it as a secondary gloss, but I'm not sure it's really necessary either.

I think that if you look up definitions of "patriot" and "nationalist" respectively in various dictionaries, it becomes cery hard to argue that 愛国者 can be translated as one and not the other. Collins for example has "Nationalist means connected with a person's great love for their nation. " However, "patriot" has more posiive connotations at last in AmE but I would argue that 愛国者 does not in Japanese, but sort of imply association with a right-wing ideology that many find unsavoury. 右翼団体 in Japan will describe themselves as 愛国主義 rather than 国家主義, but they are normally described as "nationalists" in English.

Meikyo has a list of similar constructions in its entry for 旁.
  「所」の「斤(おのづくり)」、「対」の「寸(すんづくり)」、「形」の「彡(さんづくり)」など。

We have entries for all three of those (斧旁, 彡旁, etc.)

Good info on "practical nurse" here.
https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/24503-licensed-practical-nurse-lpn
  Comments:
Setting ngrams aside, I've ordered the kanji forms consistent with all of the others.

I do not believe this should have been "practical nurse" (准看護婦, 准看護師), which seems to be a technical term for an assistant nurse who basically does strictly nursing-related duties under the supervision of someone senior.

Odds that 付き添い婦 is short for 付き添い看護婦 seem ... medium. If *anything* it is even less than "private nurse", the "nurse" bit having been omitted, possibly as shorthand, or possibly for legitimate reasons.

Here is a super-interesting modern usage:
http://www.saitamakinen-h.or.jp/hospitalization/
入院中、患者様が付き添い看護師又は付き添い婦を雇うことはできません。

This explicitly forbids *both* 添い看護師 and 付き添い婦, suggesting that the latter is *not* a 看護師 at all, and possibly a less-technical sort of helper/attendant.

On the other hand:
https://jglobal.jst.go.jp/detail?JGLOBAL_ID=200902110447481873
「付添看護」とは何だったのか 5 付添婦の労働実態 近代的な病院に存在する「前近代的」な労働形態

This puts 付添看護 and 付添婦 right next to each other, seeming to suggest they are the same thing :) No doubt 付添婦 is at least *sometimes* 付き添い看護婦.

It has an adv tag because it used to be n-adv, which was deprecated a couple of years ago and converted to [n,adv]. Unidic tags it as 副詞可能, like a lot of time-related nouns. It's considered adverbial because it can mean "at dawn" without a に or は particle. We're not consistent in how we apply adv in cases like this.

裂地(きれじ)について
表装の裂地は、昔は法衣や装束を解いて使っていましたが、明治以降に表装裂地として新たに織られるようになりました。
裂という字
きれを辞書でひくと「切(れ)」と載っているように、裁断した(切った)織物を表具に仕立てるので、(裂くのではなく)「切る」の方が正式かと思われます。 ただし表具で使われる布の総合名詞として、現在は『裂(きれ)』と書くのが一般的になっています。

"The size and color of the 裂地 kireji (Specialized Finished Scroll Cloth that has Urauchi) "

https://www.seidoshop.com/blogs/the-seido-blog/83-kakejiku-fabric-kireji
The fabric used to make a kakejiku is referred to as "kireji" (裂地). There are numerous types of kireji available in a variety of materials.Kireji's function, similar to that of a frame in Western painting, is to highlight the calligraphy or artwork; therefore picking the proper one is crucial to creating a beautiful composition.

https://nomurakakejiku.com/lesson_lineup/fabric
Kireji
The “kireji” is a type of cloth used for mounting. The price of the kireji influences the price of a “kakejiku” (hanging scroll) or its mounting. The selection of the kireji is an important element for a kakejiku, because the kireji must accentuate a main artwork.

In general, cloth is also called KIRE in Japan. To begin with, KIRE means pieces of a thing. When we want to use cloth, we usually cut out the cloth of necessary length from a roll of cloth. So we came to call not only a piece of cloth but also cloth itself KIRE. Particularly, artistic fabrics with traditional design are called KIREJI.
  Comments:
I think this should probably be split for practical reasons. 布地 seems common-ish, reasonably-well recognized, and understood to be read as ぬのじ. Paul noted in 2016 that no common 和英 references provide きれじ as a reading. It does comes up in furigina.info (one example was a translation of Les Miserables, for context...). Under きれじ, sankoku lists 切れ地 *before* 布地. If you compare that with the ngrams, that would make きれじ a rare reading of 布地. So, きれじ seems like, perhaps, an [arch] reading for 布地.

reverso has *lots* of 布地, zero 切れ地;切地.

裂地, on the other hand, does exist on reverso and elsewhere, with a use that seems to reflect daijs' third sense of きれじ. Thus, we can't flag きれじ as [arch] or [io] or what-have-you on the entire entry. We could write some big [note] or something.

You can actually just google "kireji fabric" and get quite a lot in English.(for sense [2])

What I would recommend is to put 布地 as its own entry with ぬのじ and the note "esp. for making clothing". Then a separate entry for 裂地;切れ地;切地 as きれじ, including 布地 as [oK].

For context on why I'm making this suggestion, I wanted to know the difference between the readings, so I googled 布地 ぬのじ きれじ. I ran into another American who had the exact same question, no-doubt driven by this exact entry, and posed it to hinative. (That is the danger of these blended entries, with no guidance we're all on our own to figure out what readings are valid). Anyway, 4 consecutive responses all concurred that 布地 is read "ぬのじ", "きれじ" is unrelated (they were unfamiliar with the [arch] meaning or reading), and one going so far as to warn that the usual interpretation of きれじ would be:
「きれじ」は、一般的には「切れ痔(じ(ぢ))」(裂肛, anal fissure の通称)ですね。

In fact, if you google "布地", image search will return pictures of anatomy instead. So this is no joke.

Hence my motivation to improve the guidance here.

The ever-mysterious 生地 was often referenced as a more-common term for raw fabric.

I've crammed most of what I've found into this entry, you can see how unwieldy it ends up being.

This interesting note is in shinsen's entry for 部首:
「氵(さんずい)」や「⺾(くさかんむり)」などの偏旁冠脚(へんぼうかんきゃく)を部首というのは、本来は誤り。

In their entries for 偏旁冠脚, most of the refs refer to the components as 構成部分 rather than radicals (部首).
  shinsen: 漢字の構成部分の総称。
  daijirin: 漢字の構成部分として…
  smk yoji: 漢字を構成する部分の名称。
  gakken yoji: 漢字を構成する部分。

koj uses both "構成要素" and "部首."
  漢字の代表的な構成要素である、… 漢字の部首の総称。

Most of the refs also mention that 偏旁冠脚 can, in a broad sense of the word, refer to other structural components.
1370860・垂れ・たれ[4] "kanji radical enclosing the top-left corner of a character"
1279690・構え・かまえ[4] "kanji enclosure type radical (must enclose at least two sides of the kanji)"
2175530・繞・にょう[1] "kanji radical that runs from the left to the bottom part of the kanji"
  Comments:
Strictly speaking, the components aren't necessarily radicals. But it sounds like even native speakers sometimes use them interchangeably.

It might be less confusing to refer to them as "components" or something rather than radicals.

I don't think it forbids them. The rules just say to don't use machine translated sentences.
The ones produced by AI chatbots are not translated, and they are pretty natural and certainly grammatically correct.

I don't believe Tatoeba accepts machine generated sentences.
For non-native speakers, ideally a new sentence contribution should be sourced from a text in the public domain.

Shinsen kokugo is the only one that emphasizes disparagement.
I think this kind of secondary information is better conveyed through the example sentences. Unfortunately I don't see any sentences with this word on Tatoeba. Maybe if someone can find a good one from a public domain source like Aozora Bunko, we can add it and index it.

I think we'd be expanding the scope of [food] if we added it to those terms. If I'm not mistaken, it's currently restricted to cooking terminology and names of dishes. We don't tag words like ご飯, 砂糖 or 小麦粉 as [food], even though they're not used in any other contexts.

beef
the flesh of a cow, bull, or ox, used as food.

I don't think there's anything wrong tagging "beef" or various -肉 entries as [food]. Meats could be considered "raw ingredients", sure, but they are particularly cut and prepared from animal flesh to be used as food. Nobody uses words like 鶏肉 or 鶏肉 to talk about the flesh of chicken outside their use as food.

There are some sources on the internet that write it as 蒐場 but I don't think that's correct. 蒐 is an old
kanji for atsumeru (to collect, gather). The etymology of nuta seems to be related to numa(ta). There's also
nutaunagi ぬたうなぎ【沼田鰻】 which is a type of hagfish. Fun fact: the act of splashing in a mud pit is
called nutautsu (already an entry) which is the origin (or is the sibling of) notautsu (!). This was a new
revelation to me ;)

付き添い看護 itself might have a legitimate gloss as "private nursing (care)".

付き添い看護師 loses on the ngrams, but search results suggests 付き添い看護師 is still more common in modern usage.

(see: 看護婦)

I'm not quite sure about "private nurse". Seems to be a nurse who can travel with the person (or people) under their care. I'm not sure if there is an English word for this though. Everything I've read suggests something to this effect, but see in particular the Fujisawa gov. ref:

google trans:
"We are looking for a nurse( to accompany the school!(付き添い看護師)
Fujisawa City Elementary, Junior High, and Special Needs Schools is looking for an attendant nurse to ensure the health and safety of the students in the mobile classroom that uses the Fujisawa City Yatsugatake Outdoor Experience Classroom."

I googled "attendant nurse" which is a literal translation of "付き添い", but this doesn't seem to be a "thing" in English either.

My reasoning for the second sense was that ある is acting as an auxiliary verb (attaching to a noun or stem), but since it's an inflected form and not the dictionary form we would just use [aux] instead of [aux-v].

I wasn't sure about the first sense. I was reluctant about [exp] because we're not defining it as an independent clause (although I guess in principle it could function as one). But now I see we're using [exp] for other imperative verb inflections (でありなさい, ください, なさいませ) that aren't independent clauses either.

Hi, submitter here. Comment in the meanwhile was not by me.
For what it's worth, in the work I was reading, the term was defined right after the mention:
(She is heartbroken and her friend is consoling her on the phone.)
「アイツのことは惚れた弱味だと思ってもう少し頑張れよ。[pause] あんまりぶったれてるとアイツに愛想つかされるってことだよ。アイツは女に不自由してないんだから。」
I assume ぶったれてる is supposed to be ぶーたれてる

So the author is saying it's specifically holding back due to fear of getting dumped.
I don't know what a "slave of love" is and can't find any definition online so I can't judge the accuracy of that.
