Comments: | My impression is that people would use a word like "愛国心" to distance themselves from the unsavory associations of words like "国家主義." I wouldn't be surprised if 右翼団体 groups also used the word to disingenuously distance themselves from their own views. "Patriotism" works that way in English too. The point is that both types of groups are using "愛国" specifically because they believe it will be interpreted differently or more favorably than "nationalism." I guess it wouldn't hurt to have it as a secondary gloss, but I'm not sure it's really necessary either. |

Refs: | I think that if you look up definitions of "patriot" and "nationalist" respectively in various dictionaries, it becomes cery hard to argue that 愛国者 can be translated as one and not the other. Collins for example has "Nationalist means connected with a person's great love for their nation. " However, "patriot" has more posiive connotations at last in AmE but I would argue that 愛国者 does not in Japanese, but sort of imply association with a right-wing ideology that many find unsavoury. 右翼団体 in Japan will describe themselves as 愛国主義 rather than 国家主義, but they are normally described as "nationalists" in English. |

Comments: | Apparently this is a calque from English(at least for sense [2]). Never heard of it, but "royal road" is the most common reverso gloss. sankoku does not identify as adj-na, but usage suggests otherwise. There is a 的 form, which I have created separately. Yourei has 940 examples, 60 of which are 的. の seems more common as an adj. than な, but な does appear. As an adjective this *seems* to be at least primarily (perhaps entirely) sense [3]. https://yourei.jp/王道 We don't commonly xref the 的 forms from the main forms, but at least this offers some [adj] glosses. This is far less "stodgy" of a usage than I expected. Is 王道のやり方 an easy method, or a traditional method? From what I've seen so far, it seems to be the latter. |

Comments: | That third sense from daijisen describes household furnishings and tools rather than wealth or prestige. It's not in other refs (including daijr or koj), and the source is 宇津保物語 from the 10th century. Related idiomatic expressions like "かまどを起こす" look very rare (no n-gram hits for any of its variant form or inflections), but they're recorded in modern references like sankoku. I wouldn't argue against their inclusion. To me, the "fortune / prestige" sense still seems like a reductive interpretation of the (rare) idioms. I think it relies on the context. |

It also has a new colloquial sense ('to buy / purchase something important') that it says became popular in the 2010s. We might want to see if it sticks around before adding it, though. Comments: | This term is euphemistic("royal road"). One would never guess from 王道 that there was a 的 form, and one would never guess that 王道的 is limited specifically to sense[3] of 王道. If you see 王道的 in a text, you'll have to puzzle about which sense it is. 34608 ngrams seems common enough to me that this clarity would be useful. |
