sankoku:政府から勲等(例えば勲三等)をおくるということを書き付けた文書。

Google thinks this is "a medal" and I awards no points(spot on, google):
勲章の受章者には、勲章の他に勲記が授与される。
google: In addition to the medal, recipients of the medal are also awarded a medal.

"decoration diplomas" was added in 2022:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orders,_decorations,_and_medals_of_Japan
Conferral of decoration diplomas

Emperor Meiji's signature and State Seal of Japan. This State Seal was created in 1874 and is still in use today, and is affixed to all decoration diplomas of conferred orders.
In addition to the decorations, the recipient to one of the orders is also awarded a decoration diploma. The diploma is a certificate bearing the name of the recipient, the name of the order awarded, the date of the award, the name of the awarding authority, etc., along with the State Seal of Japan. The text and content of the diploma according to the type of decoration. All the text in the diplomas is written vertically.
  Comments:
And this is where I started. Image search 勲記, and in the bottom-center of every page is a the image of the medal received. Many are framed with the medal beside.

Only a single page on all of wikipedia uses the term "decoration diploma". It is the page on Japanese honors, where the section on "decoration diplomas" was added in 2022, likely as a translation of the Japanese side. I don't think this is a word, and I don't think it makes a very useful gloss (reverso never uses it).

I think a good reverso gloss was:
このうち、名誉勲章の勲記は以下のとおりである。
His Medal of Honor citation reads as follows.

Maybe "citation" could work here. But "medal of honor" is too loaded in English to be used generically without also causing confusion.

Another, which I would also not adopt, is:
"Ambassador Kai read out the Patent of Decoration"

Here we have "award certificate"
"Dr. Friedman was presented his award by Emperor Akihito and received the award certificate from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the ceremony for the First Order of Merit and higher awards."

I lied, here's one...
Even the lower rank like Kun hachito (the 8th Order of Merit) whose Kunki (decoration diploma) does not have the name of the Emperor in it, was described to be "conferred by the Emperor."

顳 is rarer than it looks, since 顳かみ is also a valid form.

I use two fonts for reviewing kanji, a handwritten font which is missing a lot of uncommon kanji, and a stroke-order font that has *almost* everything. I was shocked to find the stroke-order font had 顳 but not 顬. This may indicate there is a reason why "顳かみ" pops up as a valid form, even though both kanji seem equally esoteric to me.   Comments:
eijiro, reverso, wikipedia xref. "indentured servitude" is also the term I'm familiar with from textbooks.

Apparently the system morphed from something debt-based some something more employment-looking over time (so the "indentured servitude" vs. "apprenticeship" distinction may be a question of when the term was used).

In the system before the 2003 revision, titles consisted of two parts, the class number (kuntō [ja]) and the decoration. For example:

勲一等旭日大綬章 (literally: 1st Class, Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun)[16]

In the pre-WWII Japanese honor system, the the medals for merit (kuntou in Japanese)
and the court ranks (ikai in Japanese) were conferred on individuals in recognition of their
exceptional public service or distinguished merit. The medals consisted of 8 grades from the
first order of merit (the highest honor) to the eighth order of merit (the lowest honor), and
the court ranks consisted of 16 ranks from senior first rank (the highest rank) to junior eighth
rank (the lowest rank). According to Ogawa (2009), the highest honors are given mostly
to public servants (such as top-ranking military officers, bureaucrats, and politicians), while
individuals in a private sector (such as top corporate executives) receive the fourth order
of merit and below. Given this, we define prestigious medal recipients as those who receive
at least the fifth order of merit (kungotou in Japanese) or the junior fifth rank (jugoi in
Japanese) .
  Comments:
I believe the numbered system identified by [1] has essentially been replaced. If you look here, you'll see an alignment between 勲等 system and modern naming:
https://kotobank.jp/word/勲等

reverso has a lot of "medals for merit". Not sure how I feel about this, but it is the translation used by a scholarly (prepublication, don't know what for) Japanese paper from Keio.

The wikipedia xref is to the whole system of Japanese honors. progressive (book result) says "an order of merit", which was my initial thought. Big difference between "an order of merit" and "the order of merit". sankoku's definition still seems correct, which would be sense[2]. Even this usage seems to have been deprecated in recent years, with the classes/orders being completely dropped.

社会奉仕家
社会奉仕家とは、見返りを求めずに行う労働する人です。
奉仕には、国や社会、目上の人につくすという意味があります。
そのため、奉仕活動は、見返りを求めずに行う労働を指します。

google trans(Note google also has "social worker" stuck to this term):
A social worker is someone who performs labor without expecting anything in return. Service has the meaning of serving one's country, society, or superiors. Therefore, acts of service refer to labor performed without expecting anything in return.

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/北原怜子
キリスト教の教義に基づき献身的な活動を展開した社会奉仕家である。

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoko_Kitahara
Satoko Kitahara (北原 怜子, Kitahara Satoko, 22 August 1929 – 23 January 1958) – later known as Elisabeth Maria Kitahara – was a Japanese Roman Catholic
Kitahara made it her goal to tend to the impoverished and orphaned as well as the sick and poor who were suffering as a result of the damage inflicted during the war. In 1950 she first met the Conventual Franciscan friar Zenon Żebrowski and the two worked together to care for destitute people and children in the riverside Ants Village. This work became the focus for Kitahara's life until she died from tuberculosis in 1958.[4][5]
  Comments:
"social worker" has a pretty strong nuance in the U.S. that differs from what this is. In particular, "social worker" is a profession for which one is duly paid. It is not a question of self-sacrifice or volunteer work.

Rather than [see="more appropriate term for social worker"], I think this gloss should just be something else.

What would be the stereotypical description of Mother Theresa? (setting aside controversy). Someone who dedicates their life to serving those in need. That's what this term seems to be. If you google it, you get a Japanese Roman Catholic woman's wikipedia entry, described as a "社会奉仕家" in the intro(in fact, you'll get several different websites referring to this one woman). No such simple gloss exists on the English side to compare to.

If you search reverso, it seems likely that the one "social worker" entry is E->J, probably plucked from here.

eijiro:
https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=社会奉仕家
"servant of the public"

A little too close to "public servant" for me, which is again quite different.

Should this be [col]? Daijs marks the appearance of this sense on 提灯 itself as 俗.

While you can't always determine everything from web searches, I think the ngrams on はなちょうちん(7772) vs はなぢょうちん(0) are fairly definitive, regardless of daijs' oddball 洟提灯 entry. (twitter usage mirrors this)

I cannot help but think we'd be better off with [sk] on はなぢょうちん, at least until the day someone shows up with real-world experience to the contrary.

I picked [ok] for lack of a better option. If we take daijs' word that it used to exist, well, it seems obsolete now...

Bullet Climbing, or dangan tozan, means to climb
throughout the night without taking sufficient rest
on the previous day. It is quite dangerous.

I Tried Bullet Climbing On Fuji And I Failed 🇯🇵 Japan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=WUmTgyQsUV4
  Comments:
From personal experience. "bullet climb" is actually a common term for Mt. Fuji in English. I didn't realize this was a literal translation, just stumbled into it.

Just google:
"bullet climb"

I see there was some discussion on how general this was, with "e.g." added. I'd suggest "esp." reflects the common use of the term, while still remaining flexible for other mountains.

"without the use of a mountain hut" is 100% baked into the Fuji meaning, as a mountain-hut stop is considered a routine step. The thing bullet-climbers specifically fail to do is stop at altitude for their blood to acclimate to the low-oxygen environment. This is why the government is always trying to discourage bullet climbing. Daijs says specifically "途中で休憩や睡眠を取らず", I don't think we should leave this out.

I think we can consider the "descent" implied in order to shorten the gloss.

I say "without recommended rest" and not "without resting", as this really is the point. Climbing a small mountain quickly without resting doesn't seem to make it a bullet climb. Maybe in a very broad definition.

Consider 2023 this article:
富士山「山小屋満室」で“弾丸登山”急増…体調急変者も続出「準備不足でした」
https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp/news_society/articles/000309333.html
Mountain huts being full leads to rise in bullet climbing, "we were not prepared".

And here's a practical definition from the article:
山小屋に宿泊せず、夜に登山を開始し山頂でのご来光を目指す、いわゆる弾丸登山。
This is a so-called bullet mountain climbing where you do not stay in a mountain hut and start climbing at night and aim to see the sunrise at the summit.

I find it curious that 弾丸登山 is not in the ngram database. I would not be surprised if this was a neologism coined specifically for Fuji.

"esp. an overnight climb to see the sunrise" would also not be incorrect.
