Comments: | I missed the "か" at the end of kojien's note. Still, I think it's just an old-fashioned and rare form. We have many such forms tagged with [rK] that wouldn't be appropriate to use in modern formal writing. |
|
8. | A* 2023-11-08 01:28:01 Marcus Richert | |
Comments: | It might be etymylogically correct (though koj's note ends with ...か) but still deemed incorrect in formal writing, or at least be considered irregular. I don't think it really qualifies for rK either. Btw shouldn't PoS be adj-f? |

Comments: | 顳 is rarer than it looks, since 顳かみ is also a valid form. I use two fonts for reviewing kanji, a handwritten font which is missing a lot of uncommon kanji, and a stroke-order font that has *almost* everything. I was shocked to find the stroke-order font had 顳 but not 顬. This may indicate there is a reason why "顳かみ" pops up as a valid form, even though both kanji seem equally esoteric to me. (This is why I include it, instead of [sK]). |

There are numerous types of kireji available in a variety of materials.Kireji's function, similar to that of a frame in Western painting, is to highlight the calligraphy or artwork; therefore picking the proper one is crucial to creating a beautiful composition. https://nomurakakejiku.com/lesson_lineup/fabric Kireji The “kireji” is a type of cloth used for mounting. The price of the kireji influences the price of a “kakejiku” (hanging scroll) or its mounting. The selection of the kireji is an important element for a kakejiku, because the kireji must accentuate a main artwork. http://y2-office.com/English_index.html In general, cloth is also called KIRE in Japan. To begin with, KIRE means pieces of a thing. When we want to use cloth, we usually cut out the cloth of necessary length from a roll of cloth. So we came to call not only a piece of cloth but also cloth itself KIRE. Particularly, artistic fabrics with traditional design are called KIREJI. |
|
Comments: | I think this should probably be split for practical reasons. 布地 seems common-ish, reasonably-well recognized, and understood to be read as ぬのじ. Paul noted in 2016 that no common 和英 references provide きれじ as a reading. It does comes up in furigina.info (one example was a translation of Les Miserables, for context...). Under きれじ, sankoku lists 切れ地 *before* 布地. If you compare that with the ngrams, that would make きれじ a rare reading of 布地. So, きれじ seems like, perhaps, an [arch] reading for 布地. reverso has *lots* of 布地, zero 切れ地;切地. 裂地, on the other hand, does exist on reverso and elsewhere, with a use that seems to reflect daijs' third sense of きれじ. Thus, we can't flag きれじ as [arch] or [io] or what-have-you on the entire entry. We could write some big [note] or something. You can actually just google "kireji fabric" and get quite a lot in English.(for sense [2]) What I would recommend is to put 布地 as its own entry with ぬのじ and the note "esp. for making clothing". Then a separate entry for 裂地;切れ地;切地 as きれじ, including 布地 as [oK]. For context on why I'm making this suggestion, I wanted to know the difference between the readings, so I googled 布地 ぬのじ きれじ. I ran into another American who had the exact same question, no-doubt driven by this exact entry, and posed it to hinative. (That is the danger of these blended entries, with no guidance we're all on our own to figure out what readings are valid). Anyway, 4 consecutive responses all concurred that 布地 is read "ぬのじ", "きれじ" is unrelated (they were unfamiliar with the [arch] meaning or reading), and one going so far as to warn that the usual interpretation of きれじ would be: 「きれじ」は、一般的には「切れ痔(じ(ぢ))」(裂肛, anal fissure の通称)ですね。 In fact, if you google "布地", image search will return pictures of anatomy instead. So this is no joke. Hence my motivation to improve the guidance here. The ever-mysterious 生地 was often referenced as a more-common term for raw fabric. I've crammed most of what I've found into this entry, you can see how unwieldy it ends up being. |

Comments: | (image search) Surely the common meaning is "while the vehicle is running", "while the vehicle is moving", "while the vehicle is in motion". xref makes this more evident. Agree that the glosses are correct in context. Note: sense[2] on 走行, computer program, was previously identified as "rare". I did a cursory additional check, and found no evidence that this would mean "while the computer program is running". |

It is quite dangerous. I Tried Bullet Climbing On Fuji And I Failed 🇯🇵 Japan https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=WUmTgyQsUV4 |
|
Comments: | From personal experience. "bullet climb" is actually a common term for Mt. Fuji in English. I didn't realize this was a literal translation, just stumbled into it. Just google: "bullet climb" I see there was some discussion on how general this was, with "e.g." added. I'd suggest "esp." reflects the common use of the term, while still remaining flexible for other mountains. "without the use of a mountain hut" is 100% baked into the Fuji meaning, as a mountain-hut stop is considered a routine step. The thing bullet-climbers specifically fail to do is stop at altitude for their blood to acclimate to the low-oxygen environment. This is why the government is always trying to discourage bullet climbing. Daijs says specifically "途中で休憩や睡眠を取らず", I don't think we should leave this out. I think we can consider the "descent" implied in order to shorten the gloss. I say "without recommended rest" and not "without resting", as this really is the point. Climbing a small mountain quickly without resting doesn't seem to make it a bullet climb. Maybe in a very broad definition. Consider 2023 this article: 富士山「山小屋満室」で“弾丸登山”急増…体調急変者も続出「準備不足でした」 https://news.tv-asahi.co.jp/news_society/articles/000309333.html Mountain huts being full leads to rise in bullet climbing, "we were not prepared". And here's a practical definition from the article: 山小屋に宿泊せず、夜に登山を開始し山頂でのご来光を目指す、いわゆる弾丸登山。 This is a so-called bullet mountain climbing where you do not stay in a mountain hut and start climbing at night and aim to see the sunrise at the summit. I find it curious that 弾丸登山 is not in the ngram database. I would not be surprised if this was a neologism coined specifically for Fuji. "esp. an overnight climb to see the sunrise" would also not be incorrect. |
